While there is card counting and things like that which can actually present a formula and skill to "gambling", they are no allowed and you can't really count cards or anything. There have been many incidents of kids becoming addicted to lootboxes to the point of stealing parents money or simply investing all of their time to open free lootboxes. Because it’s lazy game design. There’s no planning or progression to be gained from spending fun money at the fun slot machine.

Want to see a game with an actual progression system? Look at For Honor. There’s no lootboxes, no RNG, and two currencies: Steel and Scraps. Scraps used to be divided by faction, but after a certain point they were unified into the same currency, either way you were swimming in it depending on how much you play each faction. That was the currency which determined everything to do with gameplay, mainly your weapon and armour parts.
The other currency is Steel, and that’s used nearly exclusively for cosmetics. You got it after matches, from dailies, etc., and you would use it to buy skins directly. But because there were more cosmetics to buy than any amount of Steel you could earn even after years of playing, there’s no way you could have everything, which means you’d specialize in buying for 1-3 characters ie. your mains.
That is the type of progression I want in every game. Fair, and rewarding.
