Yup, you're free to hate it, but you gotta admit both X (and X-2, in some way) have the best battle systems in the whole franchise.
>manage 7 characters at once, freely switching between them >abilities are split in a balanced way so every character has a role in each situation, for example Wakka can cast ailments while Auron tanks and Tidus buffs the party, but all three aren't suitable for all enemy types >sphere grid opens a lot of customization possibilities and the grinding is only required for the dark aeons, you can complete the whole story and optional challenges without even bothering to grind >able to change armor and equipment during battles >weapons and accessories don't affect your stats directly, instead they provide % buffs and extra abilities, so you're free to change weapons anytime without worrying about lowering attack/magic power >enemies and bosses actually require strategy and make you use every available resource or skill >summons are extra playable characters rather than fancy cutscenes
I think X-2 is probably the best in the series, just because of how fast and free flowing it is, but X's is fantastic too. Being able to level everyone up equally at the same time was a God send.

Yep, don't know what it is, but the combat is fun and addicting (only played X, never played X-2)
I'm trying to find elements from this combat system to make my own game's battle system more fun. I'm making a magical girl RPG, except I want it to be actually good. Please stay tuned.

>I think X-2 is probably the best in the series I meant battle system. The game, as fun as it is, is far from the best in the series.

Nah the award for best battle system in an FF game goes to XIII-3
Agreed. For me it's the turn-based system based on agility, with the list on the side. Kiseki does it too and I love this system. The grinding for dark aeons is absolute cancer though. I think it's the worst out of any post-nes singleplayer ff.

I fucking loved the sphere grid, especially the expert one.
Was fun being able to change how the characters played at a core level. Made Lulu a strength based character so the moogle would be destroying everything. Made Yuna a black mage, which turns out to be optimal.
Jace Reed
I totally forgot this game existed.
