Why aren't there any quirky, experimental japanese games anymore? I feel like everything is mainstream western garbage or porn games.

cult cpassics don't sell

Money
you should have guessed.

If that cow ate his son on the bottom right that'd be so hot.

why are you like this

I think it's mostly because there isn't much of a middle ground between indie games and AAA games any more, publishers aren't willing to fund smaller games like now.

Creativity died when hallway walking simulators became the bar for critically and financially successful games.

The US should be invaded by Japan and forced to make the kind of game I like.

Im playing elebits right now and its really fun and quirky

That's unacceptable to people who aren't retarded.

Gen 7 happened.

Too much focus on graphical fidelity and networking sent production costs through the roof. As a result, developers only wanted to make safe AAA games that were formulaic and flavor of the month, but would guarantee a return.

The recent influx of indie is a step in the right direction, but it's not the same as the creative middle ground that used to exist with the big dog developers.

The majority of consumers enjoy them and buy them. Money and sales are all that matters in this industry.

Eh, there are still some. Keita Takahashi is still working on Wattam, so here's hoping that gets released this year.

I think it's mainly that mid-budget gaming is a lot harder to do these days, and most indie devs are pushed to low budget PC or mobile gaming. For example, Yoshio Kimura (Chulip, Little King's Story) is still making games, but in a 3 or 4 person team mostly for phones; but they did just release their first game for Steam last year.

Other people who used to make these kinds of games are retired (Iida), on hiatus (Nishi), or dead (Eno), and it doesn't look like they have much in the way of successors.

Because you're looking for console games.

There are plenty of weird or quirky games coming out in Japan, but they often aren't translated, and when they are they are super niche and you don't know how to find them.

t. someone who just played a porn vn about your little sister getting hemorrhoids that was finally translated.

this. experimentation only happens at the indie level now, where production values are too low.

People won't fucking buy them

What about splatoon.

because people were still experimenting until like ps2 era.
kind of throwing shit to the walls and seeing what sticks.
nowadays they know for 95% fact what brings max profits.
like dude why invest time and money on some shit that nobody buys when you can make something that everyone buys

I haven't masturbated in a few days and I see v-word everywhere now.

These games were even less popular in the west then they were in Japan

Two nukes weren't enough

I will vanquish you.

>You see this thing rolling towards your house
what do

That one doesn't count. Too new.

Because Modern gaming is soulless corporate garbage made even worse by cuckifornia influence

I never even heard of this.

On the bright side, I think Kimura is still doing pretty well. I know his studio ported one of his mobile games, Black Bird (a pretty fun/unique shmup) to Switch a little while back and they’ve been teasing a port for Brave Yamada-san too

Lapis X Labyrinth looks quirky and fun, that's out tomorrow.

>Why aren't there any quirky, experimental japanese games anymore?
Because of this.
