Tera had amazing maps and scenery. They managed to have players go through all of it by having them do a fuckton of quests and having a large exp requirement for the next level. Sadly most players just avoided the long quests and just grinded to 65. Forgot its name but that magic academy was my favourite map.

The console launch for tera was incredible, I still don't understand why they fucked it up so bad. They had to have done it on purpose, but like, they had hundreds of thousands of people on it, now there's 40 people playing the PS4 version that are endgame ready.

It's not just that though, all the wings and costumes that look direct from a Korean MMO are fairly obnoxious as well. That's nice to hear at least. I like how there are generic models for PvP and I would love to just have that for PvE too. Archeage did that and it was great because people would macro costume swapping between 50 costumes in a short time frame and it'd crash people with high quality character models on letting them steal your stuff.

actions combat have no place in mmorpg. Having action combat in mmorpg reduces things you can do pve wise, look at bdo, 0 dungeons and raids, tera same shit, gw2 despite having action combat managed do do some pve things right but i think its mostly due to the fact that gw2 action combat is still noticeably slow and feels like tab targeting.
On other hand action combat is fun in pvp.

Well, not necessarily, you could also create an arena in the game world every time a combat starts, outside of which the game would run normally, and everything and everyone in the arena would be turn based, but of course just instancing is much easier and would allow for better graphics, physics, AI, destroyable environment, and maybe even make it real time+ pause instead like Company of Heroes or 7'62 High Calibre.

Almost all korean MMOs are dogshit when it comes to combat and thats because the combat is fucking boring, spammy, and unsatisfying.

Its flashy and looks good in videos for sure, but when you get your hands on it, it loses its fun factor really fucking fast because while yeah, you're doing all these fancy flashy attacks, the monsters you're fighting are nothing more then massive punching bags or hordes of minions who have essentially no AI, in fact most korean MMOs make their AI just sit around and flail about it seems, and when they do want to create an encounter that seems somewhat interesting its just your basic "avoid the big fucking circle on the ground" gameplay that plagues tab targeting MMOs in the first place, so you're not getting anything out of it.

For the past 15 years MMO combat hasn't evolved, and the action combat meme doesn't make it better if you're not going to make the AI better to go with it.

PSO2 is faster and more responsive. It's a blast to play but unfortunately you really only feel the true potential of combat close to the level cap and thats because SEGA simply kept power spiking players and making gear so easy to get that your own strength trivializes everything not end game.
Character Customization is some of the best in the genre. You can create generic action hero #52468, your fap bait waifu/husband, or some la creatura. For the waifu makers it lets you alter the size, shape, and perkiness of breasts.
The accessory and clothing system give you a ton of options in the same regard or you could make something akin to the abomination pictured because all your accessories can be manipulated in size, position, rotation, etc to an extent.

As far as getting into the game, the client people not in japan use can download, translate everything, and set you up without much of the hassle it required in the pass.

It being free to level 35 is fucking pointless. They make it seem like it gives you a good introduction to the game, but it's not.
I don't say that in a "Oh man there's so much more to this game it's amazing!" way either, the game is shallow as fuck and only gets increasingly worse as you go on.

You learn basically every mechanic in the game by level 15, and it never deviates from that, outside of a select few Heavensward/Stormblood raid/trial encounters that require the use of the Duty Action button which is less a mechanic and more of a "Here's proof I'm not a complete idiot." test. The story is generic "You're the chosen one and capable of cleaving entire planets in two but only when it's plot relevant."

I did say optimal damage output. It doesn't matter if your class deals less damage as long as you can get to that optimal damage "cap" they have. For melee, reaching that cap takes much more effort than it does for ranged.

If you bring a ranged dps, you expect them to deal as much damage as the class can, just like you do with any dps you bring. This is much easier to perform for the ranged dps than pretty much any melee dps class.

for red mage and summoner yeah because they can move and attack at the same time, but that's completely wrong for black mage because they must stand still to do optimal damage. if you move too much then you're wasting buffs and potency. this requires the black mage to know the fight as well as melee dps to know exactly where to stand and when to pop cooldowns.

Optimal was perhaps a poor choice of words. What I meant is mastery of your class' rotation so you can deal as much damage as is possible for the class. Because ranged dps does not have to worry about directionals, their rotations are much simpler to pull off, and thus playing them is less of a hassle.

I'd like to see someone try making an MMO that isn't about numbers. Where fighting a boss wouldn't be about dps or threat, but rather about figuring out its mechanics and doing something specific which would then allow one player (any player) of the party to hurt the boss and then the next phase would begin. Mechanics would be designed in a way that classes with different kits would be useful to combat just going in with whatever because damage is no longer a concern.

As an example, a boss could be a dragon that has a flame breath attack that sweeps across the room. The only way to not get wiped by this attack would be for a warrior type class to raise his shield and have the party huddle behind it, a mage type class to cast a protective barrier that the party could take shelter in, or a rogue type class to throw a grappling hook into a cliff face jutting out of the arena wall and having the party climb the rope before the fire burns them alive.

Obviously the challenge in designing something like this is how to make the mechanics challenging enough to not make boss fights trivial, but I don't think that is an insurmountable task at all.

Teras combat is a bit overated. It doesn't actually feel like a fluid action game as in dungeons and stuff you have to maximize your DPS which basically means following a rotation like other mmos. And you basically get your full rotation at level 30, and do the exact same thing for the rest of time.
The game has killed trillions of children though. Specifically, my future ones.

Looted a mirror shield? You can now reflect light and spells anywhere these might be found in the game world. A staff of a lich that fires ice spells? You can use that to freeze water and other substances to access places that would otherwise be inaccessible. A magic bow? Arrows fired from the bow teleport you to the location they land in, careful though, each arrow only carries one charge of the enchantment. Any of these could be useful for certain boss encounters, and it would be up to the player to find out applications for the gear they find and earn.

I've went back to DFO recently and the changes they did have made it easier to become decent to get epics without stupid RNG grind and participate in smaller raids unlike before.

They have their own launcher before steam release. It is still strong in both China and Korea. No clue in Japan though.

I played Aion for years and had a blast. Purely F2P and I never spent a single penny on the game but I grinded my way to the top guild on the server and got (almost) the best gear in the game. I became one of the best DPS on the server and many people on my faction knew me even when I didn't know them. Sad to see the game eventually died.
