DF has an adventure mode that would sate your 'roguelike' cravings. and only when you realize the fortress is more rewarding than the adventure will you attempt to strike the earth....

Adventure mode doesn't have much to do with Rogue. It's a boring randomly generated open world game.

it's pretty great, though some mutations are completely busted. Still, a lot of fun and the world is amazing. They used to have a free demo version on freehold's site, but i dunno if that's still available. Definitely worth the money.

People aren't too retarded to install the game. There are detailed instructions so that even a child could do it. The issue is they're too fucking lazy and don't care enough about the game to go through the extra steps of a manual installation. I personally think the game is worth those extra steps, but am mindful enough to realize that not everyone cares that much about the game. This is what I mean when I refer to "views and opinions".

Keep trying. What to you keep dying to? Try to adjust your build/playstyle to avoid dying to that specific cause. For example, if you keep dying from bleeding out, prioritize unlocking staunch wounds first, and pick up a bandage or two from the trader in Joppa. The key to lasting long is literally avoiding death. It sounds obvious, but that's what you gotta do.
Here are some general tips:
>the ~ key is bound by default to "rest untill fully healed". Use this key after every altercation in the early game. Do not ever willingly enter a fight when you are not at full health
>read through the keybinds for other useful actions that you don't know about
>a few extra points in Toughness goes a long way towards early-game survivability
>buy some arrows from the merchant before leaving town, and use them liberally once you acquire a bow
>try to engage enemies in narrow tunnels only, to avoid getting surrounded. Stairs also work well
>make sure you have a reliable means of escape. If you are using mutations, things like Force Wall, Teleport, Flying, etc work very well
>if you feel that there is even a slight chance that you will die, immediately sprint away towards the nearest staircase. Break combat, heal up, and try again with a different tactic
>in general, don't be scared to run away

There is literally no way to argue with this.

Solid beginner class is the ice arcology praetorian, which gets you decent gear, weapon and shield skills, and since you're a true man, you can shove in any cybernetics you find. Rusted archway usually has a couple at the bottom, once you get past red rock and the rust wells.

My favorite is esper. Take apostle, and load up with force wall, light manipulation, ustable genome, and raise your ego and toughness as high as possible. Ego gives you free bonuses to your mental mutations, so one level of laser or teleport or whatever becomes way higher. Proselytize a watervine farmer into following you after you loot the starting houses. Dont forget to close the doors first though. If you luck out and get beguiling, you can get a second follower, and domination lets you equip items and skills on your goons. Lase away, drop force walls to run, take your time. Any followers appear next to you after changing levels, so if they wander off, just go back upstairs.

Those that don't can find a step-by-step guide on how to do it in seconds. This is the same issue with manual vs automatic cars. If they don't care about it, they will not take any extra steps to use the thing - even if the steps are minimal and simple.
