Literally the very first sets in japan consisted of monsters just ratcheting up their Atk and Def with each new release. People that act like the game was perfect until those dang dirty links/pendulums/XYZs/synchros came along are retarded and only perceive the original game as better because they played it:
a. with incomplete and entirely incorrect rules
b. under schoolyard social pressures that helped enforce a belief of "this is good because everyone else says it's good"
c. at a young age
d. all of the above
Fact is, if you hate yu-gi-oh now you likely would have hated it even more back then were you more fully aware of the game as a whole.

Yugioh is in a weird spot with this. Being a TCG they need to sell new sets. They could have went with a rotating format like Magic/Pokemon TCG have that phases out older sets but they choose to just make progressively stronger and stronger cards to an absurd degree. They also constantly introduce new mechanics which typically power creep out older mechanics to some extent. It accomplishes the same goal of selling cards but in a different way. Not using a rotating set format does add the unique factor of being able to use 99% of the cards ever made (older banned cards making up that 1% not allowed) and Yugioh has cards that are over a decade old and still see play. Some of the cards still on the forbidden list have actually been reverse power crept and would be game breaking if unbanned, Card of Safe Return, Painful Choice, The Forceful Sentry, and Delinquent Duo to name a few. That also highlights that they had no idea what they were doing for quite awhile. The earlier years of the game have some of the most broken cards ever released.

Some furry made some fetish art of the lion king characters literally shitting on each other. One of them is Scar, you can see him shitting on Simba's mom through her vagina. The pic also shows baby simba in the uterus. He is absorbing the poop though his mom's umbilical cord. It's like the Tails on a bench comic but with poop and lions instead. Some user cut this scat picture into pieces and adapted it on the Exodia card format, so on the 'left leg of the forbidden one' you got scar's face from the original pic. While the main Exodia card is baby simba eating his uncle's shit. Pretty fucked up.

Links suck because they have permantly changed yugioh, you can't play yugioh without links now. You never had to play fusion, synchro, xyz or pendulum in their era's to be successful, but now if your deck runs any extra deck cards at all, you need links. Future era's will still need link monsters unless they completely ignore the link era.

MTG brought a lot of horrible staples to TCGs like lands/resources and rotating formats. YGO broke all that shit and is the most popular TCG if you count the only two countrys that matter.
I just wish Duel Masters didn't die in the west, its a way better MTG because it fixed not having to have 1/3rds or half your deck being lands.
Its kinda funny how unpopular MTG is japan. I think it gets on average 1.9 mil sales, Duel Masters gets 9.8 mil while YGO gets 2 bil.
