GTA IV had so little vehicles and areas when it came out compared to San Andreas. In that way it felt like I went back to GTA3 again with GTA4.
GTA5 was like San Andreas from the get-go in terms of content. The AI was made a lot simpler because I guess they learned from GTA4 studies that most players didn't care and preferred more predictable and easier AI (except for combat, which GTA5's cop AI is pretty good at).
They are both tremendous achievements in gamemaking for the sheer scale and quality of them. They and Rockstar's other new open world games are some the best and most comprehensive realtime virtual simulations of reality ever made
