That's sick. What other games does this work with?
any
why would i want this
3D games benefit the most but even just rotating sprites benefit
That f zero looks great actually.
i already knew how to do this and have done this for years
what emulator supported it?
The story in this game was amazing
Someone do Ninja Five O
So why did it take this long for someone to get the idea of rendering double/quadruple the GBA's resolution, and interpolating the math of drawn sprites/lines against the higher resolution instead of the internal native?
that's neat but the player sucks so much shit at f-zero
i played it for a few minutes and don't see any sprite scaling or 3D that benefits from it. seems like a good game though.
it didnt take long at all actually because ive known how to do this for years
are you forgetting that you had to redo the same fights 2 times and you had to spam a certain move that the AI doesn't block frame perfectly?
But the combat was shit tho.
Because everyone that was in the GBA scene stopped making documentation about it and moved to the Wii scene.
This demotivated everyone making emulators and most games ran fine anyway so they left it that way.
mGBA and Higan continued where VBA stopped recently so new stuff that was supposed to be added before is being added now.
So are you guys autistic or depressed
Yeah you're smart and special, now shut the fuck up.
>questioning if someone that played a sonic game is autistic
wondering if we'll get proper network play on this emulator
So autistic, got it.
Not either of those anons, but I replayed it very recently. It's fun but it's obnoxious how combat relies solely on using your special moves, or basic attacks fast/slow enough to avoid character shields.
It's especially fun when the game asks you to use Emerl when you don't have a lot of SP without grinding, asking him to not only complete a fight without getting hit, but to do a fight without using special attacks.
Other than that, had fun kicking some ass and getting rare techniques all over again.
sadly dick kickem is not higher resolution this way
Damn it user, I thought you meant we'd be getting rid of screen crunch by increasing the size of the screen. Disappointed now.
curious to see how golden sun will look with this
Now if only they'll get around to rediscovering how to dump GBA music. There were only a couple of people who knew how to do it, and only a handful of games ever had their soundtracks dumped. The scene's been stagnant for about ten years.
Try Serious Sam Advance.
>now
lmao user. Resolution doubling has been a thing for years. Pretty much all emulators i know of can do it
There are 3 guys doing it.
The guy behind higan being one but he is annoying as fuck.
tried that and every other FPS, they don't work
Yeah but I was just talking about how good the story was, nobody said anything about the gameplay
show us a GBA emulator that did what the OP video does from before this month, ricky.
I'm guessing Asterix and Obelix XXL is also a no-go?
how about some vsync first
sadly.
You guys are either mistaking this for just scaling the image up, or you don't know that this stuff was done through Software on the GBA, so it couldn't be scaled up like you can do with most 3D console emulators.
This actually makes 3D sections and Rotated sprites higher quality.
What is your fucking problem, dude?
Autism
People in this thread are saying this works for any game, others are saying FPS games like Duke and Sam don't work well. What difference is causing it to work or not?
Post more HD screens.
i hadn't played this version of the game before and didn't actually expect it to have any scaling but it rotates the pills mario throws, neat
Realtime rotation of pixel sprites never looked good
show me what monkey ball looks like
this has been possible for literally over 10 years
Nobody in their right mind would disagree with you
Cool shit
Go read what he posted until you figure out why you're response was retarded
low res despite some promising sprite scaling on the title screen. most actual 3D games don't work and this is a blue balling experience. what are some primarily 2D games with scaling effects?
>you're
DK King of Swing?
really scraping the bottom of the barrel with this one. has some funky graphical glitches.
The fuck, there was a super monkey ball on GBA?
Yeah, Monkey Ball Jr. Due to GBA's limited hardware, majority of the stages involved flat platforms and simple ramps, not much more.
Weirdly I can't run this version of the emulator.
Try Top Gear Rally or Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam to get some games that do 'mostly' full 3d rendering.
What games would this be useful for? IIRC there aren't that many GBA games with 3D environments and/or sprite rotation/scaling.
Would Castlevania/Mega Man Zero/Metroid games benefit from this?
it works, i can't play it worth a fuck though
fuck yes I love 2X textures and shit unironically.
i tried downhill jam and it wasn't higher res, will try top gear
I thought this was already a thing? Did they not look better already? I haven't used the emulator in years so forgive me if I'm wrong.
Show Boktai
Some GBA games with actual 3D graphics:
Ozzy & Drix
Driv3r
Resident Evil 2 tech demo
Asterix XXL
Super Monkey Ball
Sonic Battle
top gear rally is partially improved, stuff off the track like trees and fences are still low res. also buggy, the pause menu doesn't display correctly and you can see cars through the track.
both warioware games on gba use lots of rotation effects if i recall correctly
the developers and emulator clans have finally, or are, catching up to what the every day computer user could do, can do, done
I can not think of a more soulless thing than playing twisted on an emulator
Do battle network
I just get the "windows cannot access the specified device path or file you may not have appropriate permissions" error.
Did anyone ever dump the Zero Mission ost? That one's a bit underrated I feel
agreed honestly but i am curious to see how the higher resolution looks
Almost no 3D effects at all. Not even rotations.
sonic battle is higher resolution
driv3r is not higher resolution except sprite rotation on the map screen
super monkey ball jr. is not higher resolution except sprite scaling and rotation on the title screen
ozzy and drix, re2, asterix XXL are not higher resolution
Do any of the GBA Castlevanias look better?
Has anyone tried Nightfire?
They're flat textured based so most likely not.
Soi
here's some rotation in drake and josh, a game i didn't know existed.
I downloaded it and where is the option for this?
I want this, but it plays GBA on my TV.
enhancements
god my eyes
please stick to your containment board >>/vr/
thanks for keeping Yea Forums clean
god forbid people talk about video games on Yea Forums
based zoomer
I forgot how fucking terrible this GTA version on the GBA was. The buildings are all still low-rez, but cars/peds are up-rez'd
Get the GBA consoleizer then
I wonder what Analogue's next project will be after their DAC...
GBA isn't /vr/
gba is not retro
Probably cheaper to buy a Gamecube + Gameboy Player than whatever Analogue would charge for playing GB/GBA carts.
Simpsons Road Rage.
Do it.
Do it now.
>18 year old system isn't retro
Retro isn't defined by the time you specifically were born in, you sound more like a zoomer than anyone else.
lol the walls look exactly like a zelda a link to the past
the game boy advance came out March 21, 2001.
it's been 18 years, user. at what date would you consider it "retro"?
benefits a lot
Jesus
Downhill Jam still looks god-awful. If it had the draw distance and the framerate it'd pass as an AM.2 game.
BASED.
/vr/ literally has a conole cutoff date, dipshit. GBA is past that.
why would I want to see every individual pixel
so this is better than HQ/XBR filters?
This doesn't even appear here, and I downloaded the most recent development version.
Wheres the enhancement settings on the emu?
See
Is someone old enough to post on Yea Forums retro now?
tools>settings>enhancements
>Retro isn't defined by the time you specifically were born in, you sound more like a zoomer than anyone else.
No you dope. /vr/ only allows discussion of games released on platforms from 1999 and earlier. So gba discussion literally isn't allowed on /vr/.
Never, because retro is about when it was released and not how long ago it was released.
This game is still fucking impressive by GBA standards. Shame the setting doesn't really do anything for static drawn sprites. It only exclusively only helps anything involving scaling/rotation, which this doesn't doesn't touch at all with its sprites, outside of the miniamp.
>Retro: relating to, reviving, or being the styles and especially the fashions of the past : fashionably nostalgic or old-fashioned
hmm, not seeing any dates there
autism
Golden Sun's world map?
The ultimate pimp slap is amazing it's s broken move thats actually broken
we don't have an FPGA clone for the GBA but we now have a consolized GBA with HDMI output
You'd know the dates if you werent a newfag zoomer and were here when it was made
Is this coming to retroarch?
Wow its fucking nothing
God, I fucking wish. I can't wait until the PS2, GC, GBA and XBOX are considered retro to fuck off from here forever.
you are not welcome on /vr/
What's the point?
99% of GBA games use sprites, you can't scale sprites up and add detail. I guess you could upscale them without interpolation and then just have a "cleaner" version of the original game when running at a higher res, but it's not actively increasng visual quality like with rendering 3d games at a higher res.
With higher resolution you can eliminate artifacts for sprite rotation.
My god this is like one of the only good threads I've seen in a bit and it's clearly Yea Forums and not /vr/.
>he wasn't around for Toilet Showdown threads
embarassing
Anything from 1999 to earlier. You'll have to go to Yea Forums if you want to discuss any PS2, GC and XBOX stuff.
Which fucking sucks
get over yourself, Yea Forums has good 6th gen threads all the time
Amazing how far with come since VisualBoyAdvance. mGBA is amazing.
The mGBA core in Retroarch seems to get updated by the dev still, so maybe.
different purpose
filters are for achievement a specific postprocessing effect, in your case those are smoothing filters
VBA-RR still has the more accurate sound emulation. For some reason they just don't give a shit about sound in mGBA and VBA-M
They either are rare, barely get bumped or are completely overshadowed by plebbit shit threads
It got dumped. Should be floating around because it's a popular game, but let me know if it's not and I'll see if I can upload it.
that looks quite crispy
I don't think I ever hear discussion about this Mario Kart in particular. Was it just forgettable?
I see no such setting
Kinda, but if you liked SNES Mario Kart it's worth checking out.
did you get a development build?
no more than any other kind of quality thread
C'mon man don't take my image without also posting the before
Never heard of VBA-RR. What's the differences between VBA-M and mGBA aside from said apparent better sound.
s-sorry user
yeah, I don't see a difference though
Unironically looks better, since it's matching the pixel ratio of the environment he's on.
I don't see the difference.
you're literally blind
open them in two tabs and go back and forth until your monkey brain can tell the difference
Can someone do Legacy of Goku II or Buu's Fury?
Every quality thread in a board is overshadowed, which is good because it avoids redditors from entering
ooooooh shit I see it now. Why the fuck was the pixels so close together before?
mGBA is a straight upgrade over VBA-M, but VBA-RR being a fork of the latter reworked the sound engine to be near perfect. Last game I tested was FireRed and the music sounds exactly like the OST release while the other 2 emus are missing some instruments.
Not sure if it applies to every game out there, but doing a comparison doesn't hurt.
this, rotating pixels make my autism flare up
Do MMBN
Can I buy one?
Completed and finished without having to build anything?
this
>removing jaggies in the PS1 games
>making Mode 7 on SNES work in HD
>now this
Emulation is fucking based.
This is a mod for mode7 games only you dumb cucks
reddit.com
It's similar to the above mod made by some autist
emucr.com
Even tho it's a bit off topic, what's the best PS1 emu? Esp for removing jaggies. Was thinking about going through some classics I never got around to trying.
For removing jaggies you'd either go with PCSX-R with PXGP filtering or Beetle PSX HW through Retroarch, which also has PXGP, but you don't have to muck around with plugins to make games run properly.
Did you bother to read what this thread is about at all? Lots of GBA games have 3d models in them, which this helps with a ton.
Actually pretty cool.
Also
>haha what does the "Yank Game Pack" buttom do?
>shit pants
thank you mgba
It's kinda fucky right now.
Does it suffer the same terrible input lag as visualboy?
Nah, mGBA is way better.
What? It was super lauded at the time. Considered a must have for the GBA.
thank you user, guess i'll hold off on replaying those gems
A shame its sequel didn't scale car sprites. It was just a series of smaller versions it swapped in/out, thus not benefiting from the emulator magic.
/r/equesting clean Golden Sun battle psynergy, summons and weapon unleash.
sprite scaling benefits a little, more obvious in motion
looks like some lazy hipster pixel shit now
someone test any Megaman BN or Zero please
99.9% of portable games are for casuals who can't perceive that they are inferior rehashes of home system games.
Also this
Huh, thought I was the only one who touched that game.
I see higher quality sound as a planned feature, that'll be a major game changer for me. GBA games sound like trash.
So how do you do this on the emulator anyway?
How about Metroid Fusion or Zero Mission on this thing?
Honestly, would this ever be realistically possible for ANY old system? Most games are coded in such a way that anything off screen isn't even rendered to save on resources, so you'd end up with more visibility yes, but the pop in would still behave by 4:3 rules more times than not. The only emulator I've seen do this is one for the game gear, and it causes problems.
Couldn't find a working clear save unfortunately. Also jesus fuck I forgot how front-loaded with dialog the sequel was. Battle doesn't really benefit that much short of your own party.
There's this, but it's very limited.
kemenaran.winosx.com
sega CD when?
Strange, last time I played this my game was way smoother looking
I'm not sure what the settings I had on were
It's mostly the webm compression. Shit was near pristine while I was playing.
All good.
At least you had a look for a file, I didn't even think of that.
someone try golden sun
What setting do I need to enable to get this to work?
Meh, they weren't designed for that, you're just going to look at more ground and sky.
>but pokémon
Sure bigger map, but your sprite is still tiny and you probably will have a harder time staring at it.
Problem is everyone dumps it a different way, or some emulators use a special-snowflake way of writing the sram rather than doing it exactly how a gba would.
>its not zoomer shit reeee keep Yea Forums clean xD
also /vr/ is full of retarded nostalgia faggots
Bro
Neat. I wonder how it looks with 3D games like Driver 3.
Advance wars 2?
Harvest Moon FoMT?
Mario Golf advance?
Mario&Luigi Superstar Saga?
Looks like it might help with some sprite scaling / rotation / translations in the Metroid series
Hardly ever used though
Majority of the '3d' games I tried made zero difference, since the majority of them are mostly software rendered environments with static sprites layered on top. Already a bunch of folks stating the here, with some partial exceptions like Top Gear Rally.
>that ammo count
nice.
does this do anything for pokemon? anyone tried fire red or emerald?
If only the GBA F-Zero games were good.
so a kinda snes game
guess who made one of them
this game has constant sprite rotation
>mGBA
VBA M is better.
>going from making a decent enough GBA launch title to replacing Hudson in making Mario Party games
I feel bad for those devs.
what about pokemon games?
These sprites look like they were shopped on the background.
try that 3d asterix and obelix with the good graphics
doesn't work
How about the GBA version of Final Fantasy 6? It has 3D on the overworld
how'd you get sprites to display? When I used the opengl renderer no sprites show up
>Meanwhile DS emulation is still shit on anything but drastic
snood's food and sood
Thing is that DS piracy is about as easy as putting roms on a micro sd and you really can't get a better experience for the touch screen than the actual hardware itself.
>Psvita
How the fuck would that even work?
works great on a smart phone
It fucking is now. Retro isn't stuck to old games you played when you were a kid and I should fucking know I started with C64.
vita's been hackable with homebrew and warez for a few years.
They're not "so close together", they're on the same resolution or pixel-grid. The emulator's additional function is to keep the sprite and resize it without sticking to the grid so that it can be displayed as it was intended to show up. It's not pixel-perfect and its result is questionable but I'd say it's nice to have the option to do that.
f-zero games are the only ones that look good with this
everything else is either hardly different or actually looks worse
BUT THE BOARD RULES ONLY ANYTHING BEFORE 2000 CAN BE RETRO
Really dumb ass board rule at times. Discussing some things like the GBA is hard cause of it.
Holy shit, that makes GB platformers playable for once.
Not really user. Watch that Link's Awakening webm through to the end. The emulator needs you to get to an area before it can start rendering it. You're essentially playing with a fog of war.
Like what the other user said, enemies and other objects aren't rendered past a certain point.
If platformers render as much as SML did there, it's enough for me.
How do the sims games look?
It's incredibly underrated nowadays with people shitting on it for controlling similarly to SMK.
Many of the weapons use sprite rotation.
Actually, so do many of the bosses like Great Armor, Golem, and Creaking Skull.
Someone get the fuck on this and make a GIF/WEBM showing this.
Has anyone tried this with that Asterisk and Obelisk game yet?
Probably won't do anything since that's actual polygons, not sprite rotation.
Just tried it out with SML2 to make sure, yeah it's exactly just a fog of war. It doesn't render outside the original screen until you walk over the area for your self, so when you play a level for the first time, you don't see any farther than you originally did on the original screen.
I do have to wonder if it is possible, or could be possible, to have files where all this data was pre-generated by someone already, and then you can distribute those files so people can boot up the game with the "fog of war" already cleared.
Climax is pretty great, what are you talking about?
DO THE TONY HAWK GAMES AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH
>bicycle captcha
NOT TODAY, MATT HOFFMAN
>upscale a GBA game
>it turns into an indie game
Also, I am hoping the Wii port gets an update with that.
I'll have to check it out. Also noticed the homebrew thing and wondering if there are any good homebrew ds emulators for 3ds or if I just need to deal with a flashcart.
I was waiting for this one, definitively a hidden gem.
Worse, it's garbage.
retro defines a time period somewhere between 1970 to 2000. anything before that is vintage. anything after that is so far undefined
>"Waaaaaaaah! Why won't you let me call the games I grew up with retro!!!???"
>that fight with Knuckles in Chapter 1
Where can I grab the build that has the feature? Dev build on the official site does not have it
I forgot those existed, surprisingly OK ports.
Why does she have blue eyes? She's a chink
This is comfy.
Makes the scrolling look off
>stark
basically the opposite of top gear rally
Why is higan so autistic, I mean it's cool that he cares but why does he has to be such a bitch all the time?
So does this mean filters will look better now?
Looks like if a SNES and a PS1 had a baby
it's an amazing game
DAAAMN now that's a great improvement
Wasn't there an adventure game that had fully 3D gameplay? I remember it ran like shit because GBA hardware and it had pretty blurry graphics but it was one of the most impressive things I've ever seen on the GBA regardless, some user said it used only sprites despite being a 3D game but if it works with any kind of rotation it might do the job here and make it look much clearer. Does anyone have a pic of the game with these settings? I would do it myself but I can't remember the name of the game at all, it was made by a company famous for making games on nintendo handhelds that are more like tech demos but I can't remember the name if the company either.
I'll finally be able to play Sonic Advance 3: extreem mansecks in full, true superHD resolution! this is actually a dream come true
You're probably thinking of the Asterix game
Why are bleached and blacked fags are such autist? Are you people that concerned about something or what?
based
>/vr/
>containment board
I don't get it
Why do people like Golden Sun again? There is never ending dialogue all the time and it's always padded out and low quality, you automatically recover your HP once a battle ends so the game has no resource management and therefore fails as a RPG and the graphics try to imitate 3d but it doesn't work well since it's a GBA game so they aged like milk.
>you automatically recover your HP once a battle ends so the game has no resource management and therefore fails as a RPG
lolwut
Interesting, I thought the GBA did mode7 in software, meaning this would be done on a game by game basis, but apparently not
Is anyone gonna do battlenetwork or what?
very interesting. I never considered the internal render resolution could be changed with GBA games.
where do I get the dev build?
Why would you want to? It looks like pixelated vomit.
most of the more sophisticated 3D games don't work with this method and would require more specialized hacks. i wonder if they'll be worked on since several racing games appear to share an engine, the work wouldn't be totally per game.
What? This has nothing to do with the thread
what the fuck? that laser was drawn with vector math & an addition blend mode? impressive.
Do you even know what the thread is about!
neat, but what i'd really like is some magic to boost the sound quality
Something like that higan add-on for the SNES that can playback high res audio but for GBA would be the only solution to this.
>4K Sonic Advance trilogy
>4K Battle Network hexalogy
>4K Hamtaro
I can't actually recall any instances of sprite rotation being used in any BN title. It always favoured drawing frames of animation for anything that should rotate.
k Hamtaro
Sounds dope, too bad I'm single and thus can't play the game
What’s a good place to download roms now?
Why do people want to see Battle Network so much?
The game does not use any 3D effects. Nor does Hamtaro.
If there's one true 3d game that needs to be enhanced it's sega rally gba. Fucking pop-in left and right
GGn
It's alright, the SNES tracks are also all unlockable too. But when you consider all the other entries it's definitely a lot less remarkable.
Emuparadise still works, you just have to look up the work around.
This is great news, hopefully it gets as good as PPSSPP.
It doesn't work for every game sadly
It's coming to the switch build of mgba too apparently. nice win for homebrewers
FFTA?
