It took quite a bit of effort and patience to get past pleb and establish the first place. Then, after I stabilized and had my gameplan established, I got raped by being stuck too long in the menu trying to suppress some autistic faggot from fucking my ears with a custom riichi tune. All of the enthusiasm I built over the tournament stream just left me like air from a flat tire.

That feel when you make one no-yaku hand by a misclick, then later in the game make another no-yaku hand because you forgot it was a south game and east isn't the prevailing wind, but still manage to get lucky as shit and draw three green dragons to bail my ass out.

I didn't deserve to win that...

The most important stat is DEF. It's the only one you have very direct influence. It's your deal in rate. Work on your defense, or learn it rather since you are new. ATK just increases when you go for bigger hands and decreases for smaller ones, doesn't mean that much. SPD is your recent win rates so if you don't know how to make good waits, a low stat means you need to study and learn how to make better ones otherwise usually just reflects luck, especially with just as bad opponents. LUK is just luck with dora pretty much.

Yeah I guess I should go study than just play by the seat of my pants, I am making good hands, but I just keep discarding risky tiles cause I don't know what's safe or risky most of the time.

So apparently the whole 'official tournament' thing is rigged from the start. Today's announcement regarding 'quotas' () seems to be damage control for the fact that some random people have already been invited, and the whole 'applications' stuff where you also had to mention your rank had absolutely no point. All 20 people seem to be specifically chosen and this will be nothing more than a 'showmatch' tournament. The illusion of rank mattering for applications was created to force players to play more in attempt to reach a better rank to increase their chances.

About an hour ago, some guys received a role like 'Catfood Tournament' or something like that, and some of them said 'we are blue because we were invited to the tournament'. 1. We have received feedback from our special guest tournament participants and the community with concerns regarding the change in the selection process . In consideration of these concerns, we will revert to the original selection process of selecting from the highest ranked players. In addition to addressing community concerns, we hope this will preserve the intensity of the matches for the players as well as to heighten the entertainment value for the viewers watching the tournament.
2. To thank the Seattle Mahjong Association for their help in spreading the word about the tournament, we are giving them one wildcard slot in the tournament for one of their members. As a result, we will select nine players from those who have applied per the original "highest rank" selection method.

However, given the intense popularity and interest from all of you about this tournament, we do want to ensure that more Mahjong Soul players get to participate in official tournaments. Therefore, we would like to announce that the moderators are working closely with Yostar to plan the next tournament, which will be more focused on allowing players to participate regardless of rank or skill. This will be an entirely separate event from the Catfood Bowl Tournament.

San shoku is worth more than ippeikou when closed, so most ideal is san shoku on 678 with 2 as pair and a closed kan on 1m, possibly hitting uradora. But that kan only makes sense if that hand reaches tenpai (also grants you a chance on rinshan in that case). Before that you'd be robbing yourself options like that ippeikou or 111 123 if you get a 7m to complete that pair.

Because knowing my luck, the tile I need to complete that hand is stuck firmly in the dead wall so I'll need that kan sooner or later. Also the kan popup every turn would piss me the fuck off.

Yes, that seems right, so that you don't get a chance to form a pair and pon, it's good against especially annoying players that always pon. Though with lucky ones that always have pairs it's better to hold on to one of them so they either have to give up on them or you form your hand before they can start ponning like crazy. Holding onto non yakuhai winds pairs is also good for pinfu. It makes sense, don't always want to discard non yakuhai winds first, clearly.

Forgot to mention the downside is that if someone else discards a non yakuhai wind first, especially kamicha, then your turn may be skipped by a lot. There are other downsides and upsides to it but you don't always discard things in certain orders. It's a balancing act and a little bit of luck when choosing what to discard first depending on what you have, what you think others may have, seat order, risks you want to take, and other players habits you may have detected to make the most out of your own hands while minimizing how quickly other hands develop. In the end though if someone starts with iishanten honitsu waiting on a suit, it doesn't really matter but whatever.

I have never heard it and it sounds really dumb. There's no way a beginner would have a good tile efficiency and i doubt beginners are better at taking risks. If it's just one game anything can happen but in the end a good player will make more money.

The way you make money in parlors is by playing aggressively, hoarding reds, and generally pushing every hand that contains money sources (like parlor-specific tiles or 'blessed' yaku).
It's the anthitesis of how a "good" Tenhou player plays.

While the Tenhou Phoenix wastes his time avoiding last place and trying to place first in points, all the mahjunkies around him will be winning with tanyaos that earn them money from the table.
In the end he'll end up in first, but wonder why he has lost money even after getting the uma bonus.

A single red five is usually worth 10000 points in money, a Tenhou player crippled by his every skill being honed towards avoiding all risk would never make it.

None of that is found in high rank lobbies though, everyone is a robot that either pushes their ready-dealt hand or folds as soon as they see that it's going to take more than three draws to get to tenpai.

Intermediate rooms (4-7d) is where the fun you're speaking of happens.
Anything under, and you're dealing with Pon Palace shenanigans, anything over and you're dealing with non-players that are just shitting themselves at the prospect of losing rank points if they don't betaori on turn 7.

A common rate for parlors is 10 yen per 1000 points.
But winning with a hand with a red dora in it gives you 100 yen, paid by the person you ronned, or 100 yen from every player if you tsumo'd.
This applies to every red dora singularly (and other things like uradora, ippatsu and certain yaku also count as one 'chip'), so tsumoing a hand with 3 red dora in it means earning 900 yen in one go.

Meanwhile, our Tenhou pro wins with 60k points.
Even with a 5-2 uma bonus, he ends up with a meagre win of 600ish yen, while the parlor players around him exchanged thousands of yen during the game, always off him since he never went for earning chances to protect his precious points.

You don't become a high ranked player in Tenhou by playing a couple games, user. It's usually the result of years of refining your technique for being the absolute best you can be at avoiding last place.
You can't overcome the habits and skills cultivated in years and literally tens of thousands of hands just by hanging around a parlor for a couple games, getting good at either will make you worse at the other.

It's not that, it's just that every other player will bend over backwards to obtain them, calling pon and chii like madmen regardless of their hand and taking every closed kan to make the chance of uradora (and thus more money) higher.
Meanwhile, the Tenhou player will be more reserved, and even while aiming for the reds he would refrain from doing stuff like deliberately taking bad waits to get reds, or carelessly kanning to spin the dora lottery.

Mahjong Parlor skills are directly opposite to Tenhou ones, you have to play really badly (for Tenhou standards) and in a specific way you wouldn't be used to if you want to make money.

There is a 3m and 4m already out, which reduces the number of potential tiles that can connect to that 4 by 2, while the wind is still 'virgin'.
Efficiently, by pure numbers, it's better to discard the wind.
In literally every actual game you'll ever play, it's better to discard the wind.

This tile effiency thing is only good when you are a new tho.When you start to question them (and this is a good thing) you should drop it and go to the next level.
Reading the tile effiency article in osamuko's blog is a good start user.

Shimocha is probably going for kokushi so it was the right choice to get rid of dangerous tiles earlier on. Just become a completely analogue player and ignore perfect efficiency.
