Money. Pursuit of wider audience's money ruined many games and often audience isn't even wider but louder.

Lootboxes/RNG microtransactions, and SJWs infecting the western world. I personally hate the battle royale fad going around but at least that's actual vidya games.

Back when developers could operate under the assumption that their audience had a high school diploma and over 100 IQ they could push artistic, story telling, and game play boundaries as aggressively as their creativity and technology would allow them. With that liberty taken away video games have stalled and arguably gotten worse in some senses.
