What went so wrong?
Is there a chance that the series will redeem itself?
What went so wrong?
Is there a chance that the series will redeem itself?
They listened to non-fans and changed up the format
Just make 10 more like 8XL and we're all good
DW9 open world stuff was interesting but no custom officer was terrible
No. At this point you are better off to play the spinoff mosou games
Maybe stagger the releases a bit so it doesn't feel like a factory
make the next empires game romance of the three kingdoms overworld and dynasty warriors battles
>DW9 open world stuff was interesting
No, it wasn't. It was boring as shit.
They are just going to pretend DW9 never happened exactly how they played it out with DW6, as evident from Warriors Orochi 4.
Which one? I liked 3, 4 and 8XL. It's just sad that most new features just sucks and you can't play through Story mode with just one character
The spinoff Mosou games were quality. I wish they hadn't stopped doing the gundam and one piece games.
This is the best way to go about an open world but honestly its still pointless. DW has always been about setpieces and fixed events in their battles and you really can't do that in randomized maps. You just end up with shit like Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2-4, where characters repeat the same three quips and have the same repeated interactions with maybe half a dozen other characters if they happen to both spawn on a stage. The idea of open world china shit is best saved for a spinoff like empires.
SHOE NIGGERS OUT OF THIS THREAD
9 should have been a spinoff, but I commend them for trying something new. The 8 formula has been raped and recycled to death, even for musou standards. I can't believe people actually wanted it again
What happened to musou games with a shit ton of customization?
There was nothing wrong with DW9 after the patches. It's not as good as DW7, but it's far better than DW8.
Warriors Orochi is better anyway.
Why don't they just completely remake one of the old PS2 ones (3,4,5)? They have been going downhill since 6.
DLC up the wazoo and falling for the open world meme
Their new RTS game seems to be doing very well on steam.
The Empires line is still fine, as are most of their adaptations. Just let the chinks buy the main line to fund the good shit.
DW6 is where it went wrong. They rushed it out so the new Renbu system was underedeveloped and sucked. Then after all the complaints about clones they decided the best way to diversify movesets was to diversify weapons with shit like rakes and brushes.
Plus all the character designs have gotten super over designed and look like a bunch of faggots.
DW is a dead series, find a new way to enjoy Three Kingdoms or hope for a spinoff Warrios title where they're restricted from fucking up the characters.
The character designs did. I used to love musou up until DW5/SW2/WO2. But when half the fucking characters look like they belong in a Korean pop band or like joke characters, I no longer feel like playing.
Did they improve 9 or does it still sucks?
Been playing a lot of 4 lately. Its mind boggling how much of an improvement it is over the newer ones.
>Morale actually has a huge effect on the battlefield.
>Weapons level up so you aren't spamming sell/delete a billion times
>mobs actually attack you
My only gripe is that you cant move about once you start a combo like the newer games. Honestly, just redo 4 with modern graphics and I'd never go back.
I have no idea why they never came back to the weapon levelling system. Its so good.
Combine ROTK 8/10 overworld and campaign with the mayhem of DW's battles.
Dynasty Warriors 9 botched the potential of an open world. It needed Empires' featureset by default to make the open world worth it.
The CUHHRAZY style of DW peaked with 8XL so if they really want to double down on the realistic strategic aspect of the series they just need to drop the overworld and just make 10 a good empires game
open world has been done to death and they did it badly
2-5 as well as the expansions are great. After that it all went downhill. I think they need to go back to why these games were so good again.
English dub was unironically the best part of the series and they butchered it in 9 by bringing NOBODY back, even Jamieson Price.
What would your dream Dynasty Warriors game look like Yea Forums?
are you talking about total war 3k?
I think it's funny how dw fans used to make fun of sengoku basara for being a comedy and parody like of the real history only to koei do exactly that with te designs and even come with some worse than capcom's series lmao.
Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2, 3, and 3.5 are epic-tier. 1 isn't the worst game in the world either.
I really fucking hate how it's becoming the beat-em-up equivalent of Telltale doing games about fucking everything but their own IPs.
99% of people on this board did not even pretend to give 2 shits about this series before they slapped Zelda and Fire Emblem on it.
Well, it's been more than a decade since the last good DW (DW5) so I doubt they got a redemption arc in themselves.
Fuck yea bro you're the only true DW OG here fucking A right brother fucking nintenKIDS amirite
>He isn't aware of how much China eats this shit up
Shin Sangoku Musou is probably the one Koei-Tecmo series that will never fucking die due to how popular it is.
DW9 was absolutely terrible, yeah. No is disputing that. But it will absolutely return and probably far better than it was before, just remember the quality increase from 6 to 7 which are vastly different games in terms of content and lack there of.
I like Hyrule Warriors, what other Warriors game would you guys recommend me from the main series?
4's weapon leveling, morale, and difficulty combined 8XL's fluid combat. Campaigns for factions other than shu/wu/wei/jin, such as yuan shao, dong zhuo, yellow turbans, and the nanman with their own hypothetical arcs.
do you like big robots? if so try gundam musou
I cared way before and the fact that there are people that only fucking discovered the existence now is annoying, yes. Specially because it isn't even the best hack and slash game and people only give a shit about it because it has ties with nintendo.
>quality increase from 6 to 7
Not hard and 7 was still dogshit compared to 3-5.
Spirit of Sanada
>What went so wrong?
Being able to stunlock Lu Bu
8 allows for alternate weapons though right? I don't like that concept. Its strange but I think it detracts from the characters if they can have the weapons of anyone else or even a powerful second weapon at all.
yea its called Hyrule Warriors
Remember when hack and slash games some years ago were criticized and laughed at as fuck, as boring and repetitive games? What the hell happened suddenly?
They're still boring and repetitive. Some people just like shutting off their brains and committing genocide.
Dark souls, hyrule warriors and fire emblem musou happened so people changed their minds.
I mean, it's a fair criticism, the difference is that suddenly those games had their fanbases increased in comparison with some years ago and the criticism isn't as harsh as it was before.
I just want another empires so i can actually have replayability
Who asked for Persona Scramble? I get Atlus milking P5 but why a musou?
The central plains were brown and bland, and most people gave up before the game ever left them.
Re-used movesets.
Completely random enemy strengths. (Random nobody bandits that could solo all three kingdoms.)
Re-used missions. (Cao Cao asked me, Cao Cao, to deliver a letter to implicate the enemy as communicating with Cao Cao.)
The game needed another year to polish, and while they've done a lot in patches, you can only launch a game once.
I think these games are cheap to do and usually give a lot of money.
When's the next Samurai Warriors game coming out? I would buy it.
Did some research. Last update was in February 2019. Seems it is in progress and will be announced in late 2019 or 2020.
>feel like playing dw
>remember playing dw3 on ps2 with my friend long ago, played for hours on end geniciding chinks and conquering all of China
>emulate it, pumped up and full of nostalgia
>there aren’t even camera controls
>get raped by first boss
I thought these games were easy how did I play them as a kid
>Fuck everything up with all the radical changes in DW6
>Revert most of those changes and start getting back to how things were before that game with DW7+8
>Fuck everything up again with DW9
Basically they just gotta drop the new shit that people didnt like and go back to how things were, again.
Which DWs are fun on PC (no emulators)? I've got a controller so shitty keyboard/mouse inputs don't matter.
fate extella
8XL
Spirit of Sanada if you like samuraishit (although it may have slowdowns)
What is wrong with you? That shit is even more boring than the average KT musou.
The only worthwhile DW games are 3-5. Dunno if they are on PC.
Warriors Orochi 4, but there's not much to do after you finish the campaign
I feel like it has most varied gameplay, because you control 3 characters that you can switch mid-combo and all characters have some extra spells. There's like 150 characters so you can play a different team in every mission.
>not quick blocking to reset camera
Take a look at this loser
neptunia u
Let's face it. DW will never be perfect. You'll never get the same game every time. Each new game, people were always bitching about something. It wasn't limited to just DW6/DW9. If DW9 kept the old charge system, but used the open world, you'd complain about the open world. If it kept the old map styles, but used the new attack system, you'd complain about that. If it was a rethread of DW8, you'd just complain the story presentation still isn't as good as DW7, that the new characters are dumb, the new weapons are dumb. You don't want anything new. That's apparent with those posts that simply ask for remakes of the older games.
>playing KT Musou
They keep adding or improving unimportant things (can have pets in your hideout and bodyguards/guardian animals) but they never fix the glaring problem of the world still being fucking empty and pointless and battles having no setpieces at all. 99 percent of all battles are still just confined to one square shaped area with enemies just scattered about.
They added a siege mode for castles but it's more of a hassle than it's worth (grappling hook disabled so you have to protect the ram while 800 archers all target you simultaneously) and once you get inside the castle it's back to the 'square shaped zone with enemies just scattered about'.
I don't know, man. DW9's open world felt really boring and gap between group of enemies are so far apart it makes fighting tedious.
They had better idea with Spirit of Sanada's segmented maps.
Not to mention how terrible and wooden the 'cutscene' animations are
You can't say that when you have an upcoming mobile game instead of an actual new game.
Nobody. Literally nobody but idiots ever wanted DW but open world. The most people ever asked for was some maps worth a damn again.
I've played the series since DW2. Sorry you aren't a special snowflake like you think you are.
S-shut up.
>What went so wrong?
Rather than improving the core concept and mechanics they were already using, Koei instead kept trying to add different and newer features on to the core mechanics, without improving the earlier additions.
Also the fucking engine.
Who the fuck is this supposed to be? Sima Yi?
It's obviously Guo Jia
I wanted open world maps, more precisely, big maps, but not the kind implemented in DW9. Yeah, not sorry I wanted something other than maps that simply funnel you in a set course so you can conveniently complete your missions along the way.
They already had a huge map system in another game. Bladestorm, which cut up said huge maps into parts. That's what they should have built upon with DW9, not going straight for the big wide open world meme.
Nah, that's Guo Jia
Nobody wanted an open world as it turned out exactly how people figured it would be. Empty and pointless.
I don't even know why people love this new battle system, it's even MORE button mashy and mindless than the old charge system and it's just Renbu with extra buttons added in.
The spin-offs have been doing everything better for a while now is what. And they're more varied because they each have their own unique franchise related spin to the gameplay.
They wanted to make an open world, without any ideas of how to use it.
At the very least, the game should have had a territory system where you get missions based on who governs the land at that point of the story, and you should always have enemies popping up if wandering into enemy territory, but they couldn't even do those basic things, leaving the world as a wasteland outside of the cities and the points where there is the current story battle.
Okay than hopefully empire will be better
>DW2
>heh, this is pretty fun
>DW3
>wow, this is fantastic
>DW4
>this is the best thing ever
>DW5
>this is great
>DW6
>the fuck is this shit
>DW7
>i guess it's not quite as bad as the previous one
>DW8
>meh
>DW9
>this is shit
These games are almost like sports games at this point. They have made so many of them when you include the expansions and spin-offs.
Is the Orochi series sequential? Would I need to play them all to get the most out of it? I've only played the original on the PSP.
The last DW game I even played was 4. What the fuck have they been doing?
Which game is the best to get the full Three Kingdoms storyline with the most details on it possible?
I like smaller scale feel of the earlier series. It hit the balance between a game based on historical material, and craziness where you pummel 300 mooks with twin fans.
If getting 1000 KOs become so easy in newer games, then whats the point? Play WO4 and see how bonkers the difference between older and newest characters, especially on special character that didnt appear in either main series. They are both built with two different direction its almost jarring how different they are. Dont even bother playing old "gods" like Nuwa because her rapier meant nothing against Athena's moveset.
It's all one continuous plotline, but you don't really need to have played previous games as you get the gist of what happened via plot summaries each game has in their galleries.
Just start with Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate if you want to play an Orochi game. Orochi 4 is very barebones in comparison even to vanilla 3.
7 I guess? It covers most of the stuff but even then it doesn't cover everything.
Watching Three Kingdoms 2010 on youtube.
I know this is a retarded asnwer but with how they make Sima Yi looks younger in each newer series despite inserting her hag wife and two adult kids isnt helping at all. I know she's supposed to be a pretty boy but how hard it is to just give her silver or white hair?
>her, she
you what mate.
Ohhh, that explains why some characters are just so much weaker than others. All their charge attacks are just generic sweeps and spins and then you have Li Naomasa who sets himself on fire and spins through the battefield while obliterating everyone on his path and then finishes them with a Rider Kick.
Red pill me on the renbu system some more. Never played that game.
>still no Sha Wujing and Cho Hakkai
>jump straight to Greek and Nordic gods
Dynasty Warriors 7. It has pretty big cinematic takes on the stories of each kingdom up to the fall of Shu and then a quick epilogue afterwards. some characters are shafted by that focus on kingdoms, but you get tons of screentime for the most famous figures and most important moments are well executed.
>Perseus is actually Loki and he teams up with Orochi
Amazing story.
Oh wow. They still use the exact same custom character moveset for Nu Wa?
At least great sword has giant swings
Been hard at work ruining everything.
Damn I haven't got to that part yet
You basically had a combo meter but the combo was just mashing the basic attack button. As you chained attacks together, your auto attacks mashing square got stronger & faster. It was this instead of teh light > heavy combos as normal
It was awful
It's worse in Naomasa's base game as SW has barely ever changed any of the cast from SW1-3 and they very much pale in comparison to characters introduced in SW4 while the game itself has giant peon mobs like other modern musou games. They used the hyper attack system as a bandaid but won't fix the underlying cause that most of the cast is still using movesets created over a DECADE+ ago.
Oh yeah, and they actually did change one character's moveset.. and somehow made Ginchiyo much worse because of it. Why ruin my waifu like that?
>Ieyasu
>"Goddamn this fatass got a spear that shoots cannon"
>It's shit
>Still shit to this day
RIP
But then there is no fun in finding the weapons or those super obscure to find final weapons. I think a better way to go about it would have been drops like for attack and defense or with the ore like Xtreme Legends does which you can then upgrade the weapon to your liking.
Weak attack is an infinite string of attacks, like Sengoku Basara. You can press strong attack for a charge attack combo, or hold it for a clearing attack. You have 4 renbu levels. You build it up by constantly attacking. It goes down if you don't attack, (like after 30 seconds or 1 minute, can't remember) or get hit too much. High renbu levels means you get more attacks in your normal string and strong charge combo attacks. And depending on your weapon type, your range will get longer, you'll attack faster, or your attacks will have more chances to guard break. For example, with Zhao Yun, his weak attack string starts off with 3 hits, and will have 16 when he reaches level 4 and his charge combo will have 4 attacks at level 4.
Besides that, DW6 introduce rolling for DW, which is handy because enemies come at you in squads of 6 or more and when they attack, they all do charging-style attacks together. Then there's blocking. Blocking is 360 and you can deflect with weak attack or counter with strong attack. You can only break guards with a strong attack. Officers will also attempt to parry or counter if you attack them too much while they're blocking.
And to finish off, you also have weak and strong throws, which are pretty good for quickly building up your renbu and you're invulnerable during it.
>We'll never get a Journey to the West team instead of just Wukong trying to dodge Flatty Monk.
Most were kind of shit but dynasty warriors gundam and fist of north star were boss.
>now you can't even clean the whole map of red dots because killing Guard Captains DOES NOTHING
>you can't even clean the whole map of red dots
What's the point of playing then? The best part of the Warriors series is walking around the empty map after going full genocide.
I fucking hate Orochi's Wukong. Scrawny little shit who always gets his ass handed to him who slavers over Kiyomori's knob non-stop.
At least he nope'd out of Team Evil when Da Ji started collaborating with Tamamo in 3 Ultimate.
>Ultimate
So there are spin-off games to the series or is that some sort of remastered next-gen port? Are any not worth playing at all because I'm willing to play the whole series since I remember enjoying the first one as much as the main DW series.
Those people criticizing them were always dumb. They are among my favorite genre in gaming. If I could only pick two genres to play for the rest of my life I'd likely choose FPS and hack and slash action games such as Ninja Gaiden, DW and such. This genre deserves so much more than the disrespect casual faggots and those gay ass journalists have given them.
yeah, apparently I'm retarded too. I like how they add his 180' headturn in his ending tho, even if tis not really visible. It's one of the things I can admit I like about DW9, there's little novel tidbits there and there.
youtube.com
It's all I've ever wanted ever since Wukong shows up. Their antics are just plain annoying at this point, to be honest
WO3 = PS3/360
WO3 Hyper = Wii U with extras
WO3 Ultimate = PS4/Xbone with even more extras
It's basically the final version of WO3 with all the previous game's extra characters and modes added with more of it's own. The story mode is long as fuck because of this.
They really fucked that one part up. Makes me want to slap whoever at KT that thought the change was necessary
They did, and just give it a little Fate Extella 2 treatment where she spawn explosion or twister here and there to "improve" it.
Post favorite tracks. youtube.com
please
That all sounds so much more needlessly complicated than it should be. When I play these games I just want to mash really and also do those charge attacks before finally unleashing musou. The idea of weak attacks having infinite doesn't sound too bad but probably should have been done in a much better way than this.
Noted. Mind as well try to get my hands on the whole series and give it a try, then. Makes me wish I didn't sell my PSP with the first Orochi, now I have to go get it again.
Sooo what am I supposed to do after finishing the campaign and side missions in WO4? I don't really care about unique weapons since they don't even have unique models. Is all I can do grinding Hundun for crystals to unlock all characters? Will there be WO4Ultimate?
I get bored of him in WO3. I can imagine they pay his voice actor a igger because monkey fucker appear in almost all stages where they need a generic troublemaker or badguy for the scenarios. And when they bring Keiji and Date they immediately follow your group. Atleast make us. fight them more than once before joining.
Free Explosion/Cyclone skill lmao. God, what dumbasses
Not really, but just see it for yourself. She's the first one anyway.
youtube.com
It wasn't complicated, it was brain dead. DW6 Empires changed the system to where you never run out and started at max Renbu level once your weapon was powered up enough.
The funny part is that they didn't take into account that the fully powered up moveset on certain weapons turned their charge attack buttons into mini-nukes so you had characters like Zhenji running around able to set off endless 360 ice element explosions with her whip's charge attack string.
I see they haven't gotten rid of the cutscenes all taking place in the comically large rooms and hallways with sometimes nothing in it but a small table and chair. I honestly hope at this point that they never do.
>muh BEAUTY
thanks Koei for for turning a generally badass general of the time into a faggy metrosexual
>wow check this out, there were like 5 people in old musou who were designed to look stupid and/or as blatant fanservice
nice cherrypicking, but the issue is that now they make up almost half the cast
>Disagree with Our Lord and Savior Zhuge Liang?
>Turn into a retarded beast instead!
Sometimes they really do the dumbest stuff
Base PS4 struggles in more busy cutscenes if they dare have the characters do more than just stand around and do the same canned gestures over and over.
Banquet scenes almost turn into slideshows.
Back when DW9 launched the entire fucking game was like that until a few patches in.
Personally, I think the charge system at this stage is old and busted. They need to rework the entire thing so C2 isn't a launcher, C3 is the stunner, C4/C6 is the crowd clearer, C5 is the area launcher. They need to actually put more thought into these charge attacks to made them unique to each character, which also means getting rid of the weapon switch system. Never liked it to begin with and the heaven/earth/man thing they introduced in DW8 was just a poor excuse to make you switch weapons.
IMO they should replace switching weapons with switching characters like in Orochi.
Will 10 redeem 9 like 7 redeemed 6?
Leper samurai should've had a mask
They are still working on 9, so who knows when or if we will even see a DW10.
I just fucking want Empires already. DW8:E and SW4:E are several years old now (and 8:E sucked).
The older tracks are very near and dear to my heart. The "narrow escape"s are even the whole reason I picked up playing guitar.
youtu.be

I don't think I even care about DW anymore after 7 games. I think I had my fill. Just give me more of those spin-offs and give me a new Gundam Musou.
All great tracks but 3's hyperactive acid shit still does it for me the most.
youtube.com
I got bored of this one fast, waaay too easy to become OP and smash out chaos difficulty. Also if you've played the previous WO games you'll notice the shit ton of reused assests
Poor Liu Shan.
I would prefer the switch mechanic they started with SW Chronicles and perfected in Fire Emblem Warriors. Being able to switch to characters in different parts of the map and give orders to your entire army either at once or individually adds a lot to the game. FEW was the best implementation as the AI allies actually DID SHIT when told and if you gave them proper back-ups.
Frankly FEW did a whole lot of things right, but that damn narrow character choices and clones hurt it big time.
It's actually kind of sad when you play through latter Shoe character stories as Liu Shan mentions a few times that wasting resources on attacking Wei is possibly a bad idea but Zhuge Liang, Jiang Wei and the other generals pretty much tune him out during those times. So he shuts up and lets them do their jobs as he believes they know better than he does.
If you want to try going strategy there is Dynasty Tactics 1/2. I feel like I'm the only one in the world who played this. I loved it, I fucking sucked at it, but I did love it. The biggest crime was Koei waiting 11 YEARS to put Lu Lingqi in the main Warriors series. Was excited to see Godseekers be a spiritual successor but instead it was DW9 all over again. I just want more tactics.
I loved DT2. The pinball combos pretty much made the game. Was also disappointed when Godseekers turned out to be completely different.
>weapon switch system
I don't like it either. The appeal of these games is these characters all being pretty unique even if the action is simple. Also what do you think of maybe a different idea on one of the charge attacks? Like maybe C2 (I'm guessing you meant square then triangle but correct me if I am wrong) does a grab or something different from all other charges.
His subpar moveset and defeatist attitude somehow rope me into playing him more than I like in WO3. Him being potrayed as a innocent idiot is probably the best course of action by Koei since Shu is the "good guy", but I like how they started going stern at like in your pic where Zhao is threatening him.
>I'm guessing you meant square then triangle but correct me if I am wrong
That's right. That's how we've always denoted charge attacks. My thought on charge attacks were kinda based on the pre-dw6 era. Ma Chao's spear's C2 is in fact a grab (a weak grab from DW6). There needs to be more of that. More movement attacks, attacks for range. Hell, I would not mind it one bit, if KT took a page out of Basara's character special attack book. All those specials define those characters, and I think DW needs more of that. Certain weapons having unique mechanics, like the circle ring was a nice start. But I need more of that and with more impact across all weapons. Because like others have said above, I really don't want to end up with another Nuwa character.
How did the series actually progress anyways?
I played it a bunch back in the day but I only played I think 3-5 and it felt like basically the same game remade 3 times barring a few minor feature changes and added characters and graphical updates. It was like FIFA getting a new game every near but essentially the same game. I don't know if that's what went so wrong though, since I haven't kept up with it since DW5
You now remember they made not just one but TWO Attack on Titan games
Kinda got bored with the first one. Swinging around and killing titans were kinda fun, but not enough to hold me.
>the second game is a literal rehash of the first one and didn't advance the story beyond what the first game already showed
But hey, at least you can play as that literal random NPC who appeared for 5 seconds in the anime, right?
The series drastically changed at 6, dialed back a bit from 7, and was sort of like 3-5 at 8. And 9 introduced the bland open world system. The character looks changed drastically from 6 onwards for fans.
