I almost never play vidya at all, I know next to nothing about modern video games.
I'm interested in playing Nier Automata, mostly because I like the OST, is it worth it? I'd play on Steam since I don't own a console.

It's good, not amazing, not shit; give it a go if you can get it cheap but follow some of the popular fixes/mods
The soundtrack is good and is put to good use in the game
It's kinda shit on kbm but more than doable
What's modern to you? What's the newest game you've played?
>if you can get it cheap
It's like 35 bucks on Steam. What do you mean by fixes/mods?
I've only ever played games on handheld consoles, latest was Pokemon XY, other than that mostly GBA games.
it is one of my favourite games alongside the original nier
I didn't like it as much as the first game, but it is good and definitely worth playing if you're interested.
I'd honestly recommend checking a guide just for sidequest info, some of them are missable (though not completely, after the 3rd ending you unlock a chapter select that lets you go back and do anything you missed) There is a main story mission near the end that will remove most of your sidequests from your quest log and you will not be able to do them again until your 2nd run, and some of the sidequests are locked to specific characters.
Alright, thanks user.
iirc ReShade, Controllers Icon fixes (if you use controller), FAR HD Texture Pack
They're the most popular on steam guides and are worth the trouble
$35 isn't bad depending on how cheap you are, don't get the dlc
I got it for $20 (Canadian) on PS4. Well worth that.
I'd recommend the game, though IDK how good a keyboard is for this game.
Okay, my monitor is shit but I'm guessing that's not important
>don't get the dlc
Why?
Absolutely yes.
I didn't expect much at all from the game, and acutally ignored it up until the PC port had been out for a while, mostly because I'm not really into DMC / Bayonetta-style action games.
Imagine my surprise when the game ended up being something much, much more than that, and perhaps the greatest emotional rollercoaster since the PS2 days. Absolutely amazing OST only makes it better.
Got 80h clocked on it on PC alone, and I later on purchased it for PS4 as well. Later on, I hunted down the original NieR for PS3, and it too was pretty boss.
tl;dr: It's awesome. Go play it. Use the FAR Mod to fix performance and visuals. Stay offline until you've beaten the game's all 5 chapters!
>Why?
Not him, but the DLC is quite meh, doesn't really add anything noteworthy, and can actually introduce minor story spoilers thru' the item descriptions and shit.
iirc some locked costumes and a fighting arena
I don't have a PS4 and it's quite expensive so I'm not sure that I want to buy one.
Is the gameplay hard?
Game isn't hard (except for the highest difficulty which is 1 shot at anything less than 100% HP)
If you go outa your way to get good weapons, chips, pods and pod abilities it becomes easier
There's a couple weapons that become OP if you equip the right chips (Cypress stick and pipe) and some weapons that outclass almost all others (T40 lance, T3 sword)
Game is 100% playable on KBM but there some annoyances in ui clickboxes, ui buttons being designed for controller inputs and aiming pod
That really makes me want to play it, thanks for the tips.
>the greatest emotional rollercoaster since the PS2 days
Which other games are like this?
>is the gameplay hard
Not really, every enemy has pretty obvious indicators for attacks you need to dodge, and healing items are plentiful and cheap at item shops, theres even a chip that will make you automatically use a healing item when your health gets low. And if you do die, you almost always respawn pretty close to where you where, boss fights even have checkpoints mid fight. I played on normal and wished I had chosen Hard, the only time I actually died was the boss in the amusement park and it was only because I was being incredibly stupid.
>which other games are like this
Drakengard and Nier: Gestalt.
Yoko Taro is the only person that makes games like Yoko Taro.
>I don't have a PS4 and it's quite expensive so I'm not sure that I want to buy one.
if you got a PC built in the last 10 years, and a GPU made in the past 5 or so years, you can easily run the game at 1080p. My friend's still using a 1st gen i5, a 2-core processor running at 2.8ghz, plus GTX 1060 6gb, and with the Far-mod, it ran 50-60fps average 99% of the time.
>Is the gameplay hard?
Depends on what kind of games you've played.
I myself got my ass kicked hard during the first few hours, and later on several times again thanks to exploring places "I was not meant to go" that soon. The manual save system also seems to trigger some younger people, but I adore it.
You really, REALLY do want to use a gamepad though. It's doable with KB/M, but you'll be making your life harder than is required.
>Which other games are like this?
Like said, Automata is the latest installment in the Yoko Taro's long-running saga. It's a straight sequel to the 2010's NieR, which was a surprise spinoff-sequel thing to 2003's Drakengard.
However, what I meant with the rollercoaster / PS2 days is that the game is easily amongst the titles like Silent Hill 2 and MGS2, when it comes to choosing engaging and atmospheric games that could be considered as "art". Certain aspects and set pieces are just genius.
Good to know, I'm shit at anything that isn't turn-based
Okay. I heard good things about Shadow of the Colossus and that it had a similar atmosphere, is that inaccurate?
>I heard good things about Shadow of the Colossus and that it had a similar atmosphere, is that inaccurate?
Different user here, but SotC is pretty cool, yeah.
It pretty much rides on its vague story, mood and colossi spectacles, so it's certainly not everyone's cup of tea. Never would've compared it to Nier, but there are some similar vibes at times now that you mention it...
I hadnt thought of it but I suppose if anything could be considered similar then it would be SotC. SotC is a classic and everyone should play it imo, to say anything about the game that you wouldn't already know would be spoilery and lessen the experience. Suffice it to say that it is very atmospheric, and there is a reason that it is still talked about all these years later.
Honestly I'm debating whether I should actually buy a gaming console now, since there are several games worth playing and the experience probably wouldn't be that great on PC.
>the experience probably wouldn't be that great on PC.
How so?
I'm a multi-way idort with a gaming PC and several consoles, and playing N:A on PC did not diminish the experience one bit. Not to mention you can pretty easily emulate the original SotC, and nowadays even the first NieR and the Drakengard games.
Meanwhile, my PS4 Pro is turning into a bigger and bigger buyer's remorse.
yeah don't
Is it really a waste of money?
Well, I don't have a gaming PC, my monitor and peripherals are shitty (I don't think my screen is even PS4 compatible), so I assumed buying new stuff would make playing more enjoyable. And having an actual controller instead of a keyboard and mouse is probably better.
Why do you regret buying your PS4?
user do I really have to list off why pc>console
>controller shit for fps, only better for a minority of games
>pc has cheap games
>can mod/fix games
>pc has other uses
I play on a 8 year old logishit $20kb, $30 Gigabyte mouse and a 8 year old 1080p IPS, shit's on console, can't compare
>Well, I don't have a gaming PC
Then buy / build one. You can LITERALLY get a PS4 killer rig for 300 bucks (or LESS); there's tons of example builds & videos for that on the internet.
>I don't think my screen is even PS4 compatible
if it has an HDMI port, it certainly is.
>And having an actual controller instead of a keyboard and mouse is probably better.
So buy a gamepad FOR YOUR PC, silly boy.
You can literally use the consoles' overpriced, official ones if you must, but 20 bucks gets you perfectly serviceable, more robust and versatile options, such as the Logitech F310.
>Why do you regret buying your PS4?
Because all the few reasons I originally had for purchasing it (ie. MGS5, FF15 ...) came to PC soon after, in a MUCH better form. Persona 5 was kinda cool, but I could've just played that on my old PS3 as well, meaning I could now emulate that too. N:A I got first on PC as well, so that doesn't count.
Besides that lack of games, there's also other annoying shit with it, such as no backwards compatible (OG PS3 at least ran PS2 and 1 games), MUCH smaller PSN Store catalog compared to PS3 and PSP (as the games aren't compatible w/ PS4), PAID ONLINE FUNCTIONS ... etc.
The machine also seems to love and hijack my internet connection's entire bandwith, often loses connection to the Sony's servers (causing various hindrances), and the loading times can be... less stellar.
just plug your PC to a TV and use a gamepad.
There, you got the undeniably best "console" money can buy, without any of the jewish BS of the Snoy's trash.
>dont have gaming pc
-Go buy a refurbished office PC with an intel i7 + 8GB RAM. That's roughly 200 bucks, give or take.
-Slap in a low-power Nvidia GPU, such as GTX 1050 / Ti. Those go for like 50 bucks used.
-Congrats! You got a gayming PC.
stopped caring about vidya a long time ago, played nier automata last year and it gave me hope again
10/10 game, 99999/10 ost
played original Nier after
Okay, fair enough, I guess I'll just invest in better peripherals.
Are there really no PS4/3/2 games worth playing that aren't available on PC?
Both Nier games are worth your time even if all you give a shit about is the music.
Same, video games are mostly dead to me, save for the occasional masterpiece like NieR.
There are a few like Bloodborne and The Last of Us but PC is such a better experience that it's worth going PC over a couple extra games imo.
>Are there really no PS4/3/2 games worth playing that aren't available on PC?
Honestly? No. And no system is worth for just one or two games in general.
Especially if you got an emulation-capable PC (which really doesn't demand much nowadays), you can enjoy 99.9% of all important titles of ALL consoles on a PC.
Meanwhile, you literally cannot play majority of the tens of thousands of games available on the PC using a console. And that's not even counting all the MODS for PC games, that can expand the library ten folds. And then there's the emulation, which pretty much renders the console-versions obsolete; pic very related.
If I had to suggest a console to get, it'd be a PS3 Slim. It's easy to hack, and even in its default state it's pretty reliable and has tons of games.
Same goes with PS2, which still is the king of all gaming consoles.
>Bloodborne and The Last of Us
Two extremely overrated, even pure shit games.
Also the latter's soon emulateable on RPCS3, and both can be played on PC via Sony's PS NOW! -service if absolutely needed.
>an emulation-capable PC
Aren't emulators sometimes unreliable or inferior? For the Persona series for example
> Soon emulateable
AFAIK it's not even close to playable yet because of all the low level hardware tricks Naughty Dog uses.
If you think Bloodborne is "pure shit", the only thing that's pure shit is your taste. The Last of Us is a bit more controversial here, but a ton of people liked the story, and OP seems to want games with a heartfelt story, so I thought it was at least worth mentioning
Yes. It depends on the emulator. A good emulator can provide an experience superior to playing on the original console, but a shitty emulator or a new/unfinished emulator will often be worse. I'm not sure how Persona runs these days
>Aren't emulators sometimes unreliable or inferior?
That's a very broad question.
It really depends on the emulator, user's settings, the game itself... etc.
Yes, they CAN be unreliable or inferior, but in general they tend to be the far superior, more versatile way to play the console games. Most emulators are also constantly being developed further, improving performance and compatibility.
Take the Zelda: BotW as an example. Running the game at 4K / 60fps, versus the native, jumpy 30fps at ~720p ... which would you choose?
>I'm interested in playing Nier Automata, mostly because I like the OST
We both know the reason reason user, don't worry you can be honest
>For the Persona series for example
Persona games are perhaps among the easiest PS1 and 2 games to emulate flawlessly.
P5 has been playable for nearly two years soon.
Contrary to the chair-clattering Incel's delusions, some people are not after the fat, polygonal asses.
Sure thing bud
Uh-huh.
2booty's rear is fucking ugly.
A2 is far superior robutt
I played the game solely for the story and feels.
>P5 has been playable for nearly two years soon.
Huh. I thought it hadn't been ported to PC yet at all.
>I thought it hadn't been ported to PC yet at all.
Emulation, son.
