It's also a good way to generate interest in the West, as any reveal would now lineup with the releases of DQXI S and DQ Builders 2. I think a DQ Heroes collection is also being released on the Switch
They would be trying to generate interest in the series at the same time they're putting out most of their newest content, and I wouldn't doubt the Switch getting ports of I-IX, at the very least in Japan (they got ports of I-III on PS4), since DQ has always been a Nintendo series.

What about liking the characters for what they are? I love Inkling because I love Splatoon, not because it's "relevant". I like Joker because I'm a big Persona fan and SMT fan, not because he's "hype".
I'm a massive Dragon Quest V fan so Erdrick would be great even though V's MC is different, I'd be thrilled with Neku, I'd love Chrono, and hell, even something like Musashi would be interesting. Sora is cool but I'm a bigger Roxas fan, and Geno was really memorable in 7 Stars. Everyone is so busy with roster wars that no one ever cares about the actual games and characters.

I feel like if a DQ character ever gets in Smash, it'll probably be one of these choices:

Honestly, if I had to take a guess, I'd figure it would be the Luminary simply because he's the most recent one, as well as the fact that DQXI is getting its Switch port later this year. Not like it matters too much which Hero is chosen because the majority of them can all do pretty much the exact same things as each other ability-wise. The only thing I don't like about Luminary is his mophead. I never got used to that.

The series is very good. Start with 1, then play 3. 5 is also very very good, and I recommend checking out the Switch version of 11 when it comes out. It's hard to recommend specific games because all of them are very good. Just start with a remake of 1, then play the Snes version of 3. After that, fair game.

When Toriyama did it he was not exactly a superstar already, Dragon Ball was only entering the Red Ribbon saga, of course he was recognizable, but he was far from his peak in the late 80s and early 90s, which included both DQ and DB achievements.
