I have been mocked in the past for not getting emotional during some of "the great" films and tv shows out there. (I'm a little autistic) But Yakuza and anime can make me emotional because the writing is melodramatic and it's always very clear what I should be feeling. The music helps, but mostly I like that the characters all say clearly how they are feeling and what they are thinking. This helps me understand them and I can feel myself getting emotional from the sad parts.

I didn't say he has a lot of flaws. One flaw is enough, since it constantly gets leads to failures and gets him in trouble. That's the kind of thing that makes someone human and likable. Mary sues are such because are perfect and they do not make mistakes, which makes them not seem like human at all, which makes them unlikable.

I'm worried it's going to be too different. I've bought basically the same game 7 times over (and their rereleases) and I'd rather 7 more of the same. I wish they wouldn't try anything new.

He's incredibly naive and trusts pretty much anyone (See tons and tons of substories and the Omi Chairman in 5 just off the top of my head).
This also sort of ties in to the previous point but he only assumes the best outcome or a righteous outcome and it takes until 6 before he actually thinks of getting his hands properly dirty. This leads to him constantly being taken advantage of during substories until he finally understands he's being scammed or he can see through a trick.
He's hot-headed and acts before he thinks which leads to a huge mess in 6 when he refuses to listen to Akiyama, when he did the whole Fourth Chairman thing which required him to abdicate immediately because he was thinking on his feet more than anything, there's the entire Ryuji situation, and then various other minor ones here and there.
He fails to protect virtually anyone important to him for any real amount of time because things from his past always come back to haunt him or the people he loves. At best he's a stopgap measure.
He doesn't understand social cues and doesn't really understand people in general as evidenced by a ridiculous amount of situations throughout the series, with examples being dating, he's constantly misreading what people mean, and he always makes assumptions of things as well. That's not to say he isn't able to get along with women though, the hostesses and substories show us he can, but it's two sides of the same coin basically, he's both unable to understand things people are implying and yet is able to converse in-depth with people constantly and understand another meaning behind their words.

That's what puts me off the most of Judgment. Sure, Yakuza has a lot of bullshit, but not straight up magic out of nowhere.

Ishin Amon literally summons magic clones of himself to buff him and then he also has a sword that shoots rays of magic at enemies and glows which Ryoma can wield. Hell, the Amon clan in general does ridiculous nonsense bordering on magical.
Black Panther 2's entire story (Which should be canon to the main series because Akiyama and Hana are in the game though not of the main story and The Florist is in the main story) hinges upon Ryo actually being able to see into the future which Ryo even demonstrates as being real two times in a row by guessing the Roulette twice and being the orchestrator of all of Tatsuya's successes and failures.
Saejima fights literal mountain gods with his fists that cause avalanches and attack him with magical attacks.
Kappas are real creatures as evidenced by Saejima's substory.
There's many magical tengu masks in Kenzan that, in one instance, allows the guy to literally split himself into 6 clones which all spit fire and do a ridiculous amount of stuff because the guy wearing the masks gets possessed by the spirit in the mask.
If you accept the supernatural as "magic" then technically aliens abducting cows are also an occurrence as seen in Kenzan.
Ebisu, the god of luck and fisherman, is real and appears to a woman in Ishin.

Keep in mind that all those items in Judgment are DLC as well so you basically pay for the ability to use magic anyway, it's not something you can obtain normally. Otherwise Ono Michio was actually around in K2, PCF aged 30 years in 1 year, and so on.

There are plenty of bad mary sues for men, (naruto comes to mind) but Kiryu isn't one of them. He fulfills his role as Yakuza Christ against other Yakuza legends whilst his stoic temperament perfectly contrasts with the goofy side missions he does. That dissonance between serious crime drama and wacky Japanese activities is what makes this series likable. A bad Mary Sue stands in opposition to the purpose and message of a story; that and many do have legitimate flaws (such as having a shitty attitude) which make them unlikeable to the audience but which the other characters ignore. I ought to say that what makes a good vidja story and a good movie/book can differ. Games are usually made with the purpose of pure unadulterated fun, which Yakuza certainly accomplishes.

The Yakuza games could be market far better, GTA casuals won't buy it since it looks to Japanese and weebs won't buy since it looks to GTA.

Clan Creator only really got tedious near the end when they had incredibly long levels with tons of bosses and you could just barely micromanage everything because they would fling so much at you so quickly.
Bouncer missions are fine for the first try but then yeah, they got really tedious. The ability you get from it is worth the effort though, it's fun to use in the coliseum when you don't feel like trying.

Be interesting to see people react to Yakuza 3, get's a lot of backlash from fans but for me it's near the peak of the series and definitely the best of the Kiryu Trilogy.

Kiryu represents the ideal romanticized image of what the yakuza think they "should" be. Each game has Kiryu confront the realities of what the yakuza actually are, and what real life in general is actually like. That conflict fuels not only the plot, but also Kiryu's interactions with others. Complaining about whether he has "character flaws" or whatever is retarded and completely misses the point, and is exhibit A as to why the term "Mary Sue" (and other related terms) should never be applied to anything but self-insert fan-fiction author avatars.

He's the archetypal man. While that involves making him cool, charismatic and strong, it also means he embodies the negative aspects of masculinity as well.
This really comes to a head in 5, where we see Kiryu in a state of clinical depression. Kiryu feels he has no purpose as a result of no longer being needed as a father: a phase which a lot of men go through. We also see how constantly holding in his anger for the sake of being the stoical ideal man has taken its toll on him. Not really, Saints Row just flat out stopped giving a shit, 3's no stupider than 2 but a ton of people hate the pace, it's the first game without the lead writer from 1/2 and it's were the series starts to become more about the characters lives outside of criminal/detective drama, later games would make this stuff largely optional 3 makes it necessary.
4, 5 and DS are all dumb in major areas but a lot of that can be blamed on the need to tell 4 different stories and then tie them up at the very end.

In reality yakuza are boring as fuck though. I don't think anyone wants a game about scamming dumb pensioners.

My dad hated him because he was lazy and perverted, but I loved Shinada. He was a lovable doofus, and he worked well as a parallel to Kiryu, as they'd both lost everything and now found themselves depressed and alone, but chose to deal with it in different ways.

6 in the top half for me, it lacks the more varied combat of 0 but it feels like a much more consistent package than the Kiwami games, they feels like a strange mix of the older titles with the newer ones, not just in terms of visuals and gameplay but in terms of tone, Kiryu acts way more like his 0 self in the new scenes.

Loved him, my fave next to Kiryu shame he never got a follow-up, hoping Ichiban is the same type of character, gritty and beatdown but likeable and enthusiastic, like a Naruto in his late 30s who's given up on higher aspirations and just wants to chill at the bottom and sleep with older women.

How does he have no flaws? Story-wise he accomplishes very little, he does very little to protect his people, in general he bungles everything up, and in dialogue he's an autistic moron. He's just really good at street fighting, which is true of all action game characters since it's possible for the player to perfect everything.

The typical mark of a Mary Sue is that all of their problems are just painted on and don't mean anything since everyone likes them, they can accomplish anything they attempt, and they always get the man of their dreams. They have informed "flaws" but they never have any negative consequences because of them. This is much harder to demonstrate in a video game since the player can determine a lot of what happens, so you have to look at how they are characterized and how the main story turns out.

I don't think Kiryu is an author self-insert anyway, so it's moot. He just looks good compared to everyone else because of his unbreakable moral code (which is a major flaw) and because most of the side characters are even more autistic freakshows. Anyone would look "perfect" after completing every minigame and side quest.

He's basically a throwback to the invincible Golgo 13 / Kenshiro / Lone Wolf kind of character. You know, the kind that cries manly tears after singlehandedly punching an army to death, because a little kid handed him a flower.

The localization of 0 is honestly really bad. That passage, along with a lot of what Majima says even in serious situations (kick in the dick, shitlord) smack of a fresh localization team that wanted a game set in 80s Japan to adhere to modern tastes. Yes, Majima is brusque and affecting an Kansai dialect, but that doesn't mean he sounds like a college student from 2017. The origin writing does touch on Kiryu being comically accepting of almost everyone, but the preachy asides are localized add-ons.

I HATED the combat in YK2 at first but after getting used to it I quickly realized it was way better in some way since it just kind of combined all the fighting styles from the previous Y0 and YK into a single ones, I can still notice the animations from Beast style, Legend style, Brawler style etc in some of the combos, finishers or heat moves. Kind of cool actually.

They consolidated it back in 6, K2's only new addition was charged punches which if I remember right he had in 5. It's actually a downgrade from the original DoD in certain ways, specifically because you have to go into Ultimate Heat in order to grab large objects when Kiryu and Saejima could do it without any fanfare and now you have to charge your dropkicks. The scissor kick is a neat addition though. My favorite change with the new engine is how staircases don't just cause an enemy to instantly push you away if you get near them and if you grab an enemy when you're below them or above them it changes the effect and animation. Below sweeps their feet while above has Kiryu slam their head down. In 6 you could only do this by the staircase in Onomichi and in K2 you can do it by the river in Sotenbori.

He canonically loses a number of fights despite his strength being his main thing, make rather dumb decisions at times (and is called out on them) and his lack of foresight is the cause for several big issues that occur.
