Cyberpunk's better than fantasy because it's specifically a social critique; the cannot be separated from its use as a vehicle to critique capitalism in the late/post cold war era, or else it ceases to be cyberpunk. The only real failure of cyberpunk is that it failed to take into account the possibility that megacorps would never take off the mask of friendliness; we can see what has actually happened is megacorps found it advantageous to co opt possible voices of dissent against their accumulation of power by presenting themselves as progressive institutions

FF 7 is more cyberpunk than fantasy, which is ironically why it's the best FF game of all time and the most loved. Meanwhile the FF games that stick to fantasy in general tend to not be that interesting to look at and very forgettable(ie. FF 9, FF X, FF 12, FF 14).

First thing's first: Blader Runner isn't even cyberpunk. There's no cybernetic prostheses, nothing particularly resembling the internet, or any other tropes necessary for "cyber" to be appropriate. If anything it's biopunk.

Another example of the punk genre is Vampire the Masquerade. It's squarely in the category of Gothicpunk with the vampires and ancient conspiracies and vampire hierarchies and shit.

So FF7 has Materia which is the crystallized life energy of the planet exploited as a source of power both literally and metaphorically. Magic and electrical power are derived from the same source. It has overtones of a criminal element fighting against a corporate overlords as eco-terrorists.

Cyber, Magi, Steak, Bio, Gothic are all just aesthetics. Punk is the genre.
