What currently is the best first party controller? Third party hacks no need apply
How would they improve going into next gen?

Depends entirely on what you want out of a controller.
Battery life? Switch Pro. Triggers? Xbone. Face buttons? Either Switch Pro or DS4. Sticks? Either Switch Pro or Xbone. Dpad? Literally anything but Switch Pro.
Also both DS4 and the Xbone controller have headphone jacks, which are nifty. But Xbone uses fucking AA batteries and both the Xbone and DS4 use microUSB instead of Type-C.
My vote is either the Switch Pro (if you're comfortable with doing the tape mod) or the Xbone controller. That being said, they're all more than solid. Joy-cons should only be used when attached to the Switch, or to play ARMS/Splatoon 2.
Also if you're into racing games and don't want to use a wheel, Xbone controller or go home.
Switch pro controller is perfect in everything except its d-pad, where PS4 shines. If you had switch pro with a ps4 d-pad it would be a perfect controller.
Xbone
Switch dpad is shit even after "fixing" it and overall just feels meh
DS4 is uncomfortable but I appreciate the features it has which are handy for emulation
Xbone feels the best, has the best triggers, a good dpad and solid buttons. Literally all I want from next gen is an Xbone controller with gyro, USB C and maybe a slightly less clicky dpad.
Joycons are retard tier
count out nintendo this generation I have 2 pairs of joycons and 2 pro controllers and they all have issues with them. Even if the joycons weren't janky broken shit their design would still be WOAT
Wii U pro.
Xbox will always be the best one. It's a perfect fit for your hand and it just feels so good. Even if I don't own a Xbox and don't intend to ever buy one, I love playing it on the PC.
I like DS4 because it's the most comfortable and has the best d-pad. I also prefer the placement of the joysticks. Is there a reason why every other controller has one on top and one on bottom?
Next gen Playstation controller would be perfect if had a longer battery life and no stupid light bar on it.
>xbone
no gyro
>switch
bad d-pad
>ds4
bad battery life
Why can't someone just make a flawless controller?
A controller with the xbone's triggers, the PS4 or Switch's bumpers, the PS4 or Switch's face buttons, the Vita's dpad, the Xbone's sticks, and the Switch Pro's battery would be fucking perfect.
DS3. Just werks even as a standard control you plug into your computer. DS4 loses by default because of micro-usb. Seriously why would you use micro-usb if you have the space for mini-usb? Stores always have both wires right next to eachother. Micro-usb ruined everything.
I will never understand the AA battery complaint. The reality is the ps4 controller gets absolute garbage battery life and when both the PS4 and PS3 are old as fuck down the line they will not maintain any sort of charge making them permanently wired controllers.
meanwhile with AA all you have to do is buy rechargeable batteries and exchange them out when they get old. The xbox one controller gets like 3X the battery life of my shitty ps4 controller. There are also battery packs for the xbox controller for those that want to go that route.
cause batteries are for fags, i'm not buying that shit
You see, that argument would be fine - except the Wii U/Switch Pro controllers exist, and have 40+ hours battery lives. Clearly you can have a wireless controller that doesn't have a shit battery.
I've never encountered the d-pad issue on Switch Pro. I thought it was an isolated thing.
Steam Controller lasts 80+ hours on two AAs.
Ideally controllers would just use replaceable batteries that can be recharged in the controller. Best of both worlds.
Too bad Steam controller is so obnoxious to make compatible with non-Steam games.
Xbox One > Switch Pro Controller > Playstation 4 > shit > Switch Joy Cons
Switch Pro Controller is unironically kino.
It's a design flaw. If you play a lot of Puyo Puyo Tetris/Tetris 99 you're bound to notice it.
Which controller has the BEST colors?
As user said, is a design flaw, not because the controller is broken
The thing is, Nintendo put the d-pad “sensor pads” horizontally instead of vertically, causing the misinputs.
This but fuck xbone controllers for using AA batteries. I'd still rather invest in a xim apex for fps or mmo's with lots of hotkeys even though OP said no third party stuff.
Well seeing as they are all black yet the Switch pro is sort of transparent, I'd say Switch pro
I love the Dualshock 4, but it's fucking ass on PC. Bluetooth connection is wonky at best and the USB it uses is annoying with random disconnects. Still a great pad though, especially on the console.
Lmao this argument makes me mad.
AA is fucking life. I use enloops that last a whole week and then when they die I can hot swap them out easy. Not to mention the controller isnt useless once the batteries die like ps4
How the fuck did you break 4 nintendo controllers?
That’s on you, hamhands.
>AA batteries bad
>integrated battery good
Why are people so retarded? You can literally get God-tier AA rechargeable batteries with a charging kit for like $20. Meanwhile, with an integrated battery you get fucked when it dies out, not to mention it will not hold its charge just as good as the first day very quickly. I just swap batteries when they're low in like 30 seconds after finishing a gaming session and that's it. It literally doesn't get any better than that.
>not to mention it will not hold its charge just as good as the first day very quickly
Not that guy, but wouldn't this be the same case for AA batteries?
PS2 with D pad and Sees Buttons.
The controller that could have been ;_;
*Snes
>replacing 2 AA batteries vs replacing the whole controller
Honestly I don't care if I have to buy a proprietary battery, just let me replace that one component once in awhile.
Yes, eventually. But you can just buy another good set of rechargeables very cheaply and very easily when they do. With an integrated battery, good luck finding a replacement at a reasonable price if you don't live in the US (and even in the US it will never be as convenient as getting AA batteries that you can buy basically everywhere).
That's true, I've never seen it that way.
Then again I am a pleb that loves Nintendo controllers and only uses them. I am just glad my Wii U pro has lasted me 5 years so a dying battery wasn't really something I'd consider until this thread.
If you want a controller for PC, it'll be plugged in pretty much permanently anyway.
>not using it wirelessly for couch gaming
I didn't know we were playing games at our high school computer science class
well if that's the case, count out the ds4 as well. They just don't last, flimsy, sticks melt in your hands, trackpad destroys the battery and they're just badly designed.
This is something that ended up being good about 360 controllers: You can just buy new rechargeable AAs for it. You can't do that for most wireless controllers.
because i've spent the previous 30 years using nindenium laced controllers so I just got used to not having to baby hunks of plastic
This.
I, too like to throw my electronics everywhere then blame Nintendo for it.
DS4 is pretty comfy but it seems to be a bit small for my hands. I'm using it wirelessly with a Bluetooth dongle. Battery is pretty good, around 6 to 8 hours with the stupid light off.
XboneS looks like it will fit my hands better but my DS4 is still going strong so not going to switch yet.
Also complaining about AA battery is dumb.
None of these are the best
The Dualshock 3 is the best universal controller
Switch Pro Controller
>Longest battery life
>Falls right into your hands
>Great analog sticks
>Motion sensor for motion aiming (I know it's on dualshock 4 but no game uses it)
>HD Rumble
Just quality all around. The only things I would change is to have there be a head set jack and Analog triggers.
I picked up one of these things recently for fairly cheap just to try it out. The size isn't a problem. The biggest problems it has are that the triggers are too low as to be uncomfortable and the oval buttons aren't great either. At least I can flip it.
Dualshock's been the best controller since the PS1. Nintendo's were always retarded and awkward. And Micro's were always too fat.
t. Pleb
I like joy cons
Being able to split the controller is very comfortable
