Never played a Zelda game before, should I check this out?
What emulator is best for this one? I personally use mupen64plus-gui for most of my N64 games.

just play ys instead its better then zelda

>should I check this out?
>Should I check out what has consistently been rated as the most acclaimed game of all time for 20 years?

Use Citra to play the superior 3ds remake

That's Majora's Mask, retard. The 3DS version of OoT is objectively better.

Attached: 1558351643240.jpg (4000x5333, 3.9M)

What makes it better?

is mupen better than project64? cause it still has some problems even with the Glide64 plugin

plus project64 begs you to shill out money

see

Better graphics/textures, widescreen support, and framerate. The original only runs at 20fps which can be a bit jarring if you're used to high framerates. The only problem is that the bottom screen is a little awkward if you only have one monitor because the main screen has to get shrunk to fit them both.

>The only problem is that the bottom screen is a little awkward if you only have one monitor because the main screen has to get shrunk to fit them both.
Isn't there a way to make it transparent unless you hover your mouse over it? Never emulated a DS or 3DS.

Twilight Princess is the best one to start with. Can't say it'll run good or bad on an emulator though

I'm not sure. It's been awhile since I used Citra and I didn't look that far into screen layouts. The basic options I could see just had 3 layouts where they were on the same screen but not overlapping

Just go ahead and use any good'ol piece of shit N64 emulator for it honestly. The N64 graphics have charm even if they are outdated, and the 20fps lock isn't really as jarring as you'd think. The game isn't running slower because of it like most 20fps slowdowns and it accepts inputs at 60fps so it's snappy. It will just look like it has that charming old jank.

I'm just gonna post some old comparison screenshots from back when this was first announced

Attached: ocarina_of_time_n64_3ds_comparison_thumb.jpg (563x936, 169K)

>Better graphics/textures
They aren't faithful at all and straight up worse in a lot of cases.
>widescreen support
can be emulated
>framerate
Not a big deal.

Play Breath of the Wild.

The reason why Ocarina of Time was so popular was because it was one of the very first open world experiences on consoles.

Don't emulate N64 shit it sucks

Attached: 061611_zeldacomparison_market1--article_image.jpg (400x463, 62K)

Listen to any poster in this thread other than this guy. BOTW is dogshit and even comparing it to Ocarina of Time is an insult to good taste.

Do not do this . It isn't charactersistic of the series and therefore one of the worst places to start at if you want to get into it.

This, play on a 3DS though for gyro aiming or get a controller that can work with it. Makes aiming so much better

A massive improvement
>muh darkness
The 3DS doesn’t need it to hide blurry textures like the N64 release

cant someone make a restoration texture pack for the 3ds rom?

>The 3DS doesn’t need it to hide blurry textures like the N64 release
I guess the 3DS doesn't need good atmosphere either.

Attached: oot comparison 3.png (920x264, 286K)

The the atmosphere is the same in both versions.

I know for Majora there’s an enhanced texture port for the original

Dunno which 64 emulator is good anymore, but if you dislike censorship go with a v1.0 or a v1.1 rom.

Attached: 1558363202342.jpg (2500x2972, 2.53M)

>emulator
casual get the fuck out

Attached: madanf.jpg (255x255, 15K)

There’s nothing wrong with emulation.

A 2DS and a copy of this game would run you less than 85USD dude just go buy that

Nigger what are you on about? The graphics are objectively superior

It's pretty fun, there's kind of a war between 2d and 3d zelda fans though. I personally like both, but after you play this one, go ahead and try ALTTP and/or LA. Majoras is my personal favorite.

Attached: n64_the_legend_zelda_majoras_mask_holo_p_w9r9hd.jpg (2100x1532, 884K)

But why would I do that if he could emulate the superior N64 version for free?

i agree theres nothing wrong with it, but it cant compare to playing the actual game with the shit controler on a good crt *sip*
it may be technicly superior but its soulless
pic unrelated

Attached: knio.jpg (557x500, 134K)

>N64 version is soulless but the remake isn't
Nigger what, the remake is the epitome of soulless

a lot of people think the shitty vaseline n64 graphics have more "atmosphere"

Sure if you're blind.

>vaseline

Attached: 56776324_p0.jpg (336x422, 92K)

No, the human models look weird in a lot of places and the textures are worse in so many areas.

disregard me i miss read your earlier post
3ds version aint that bad tho, mainly due to better aiming

don't emulate n64 shit. it's never that good just bearable. either play on an og 64 or the remake on 3ds or emulate the 3ds version.

Aiming is one of the few things the remake has over the original, it's not really worth all the negatives that come with it.

if there is one n64 game that is emulated pretty much perfectly it is ocarina of time.

Alright, what thing about emulated OOT makes it literally unplayable to you?

Attached: 1533477911348.png (556x712, 16K)

Wii VC version is fine, probably okay to emulate too.
There are thousands of small bugs that add up to something very different from the original version. Even the gamecube version has these problems.

Whatever standard 64 emulator you use should be fine. OOT is the kind of game almost all of them should run fine, it was one of the most played games on the system so they all want to make sure they get it right.

Only thing is you should use a controller. You can beat it with keyboard but it wont be as enjoyable, game was made with at least one control stick in mind.

99% of players wont notice any of them.

That's only for obscure ass games. You don't think they got ZELDA running to close to perfect in 20 years?

So? Give me examples,

>Shits on emulators
>Recommends the Virtual Console

>Only thing is you should use a controller. You can beat it with keyboard but it wont be as enjoyable, game was made with at least one control stick in mind.
I got an xbox360 controller, what is the optimal input configuration for OOT (and most N64 games in general)?

as long as the version you play retains the original darkness then it's all good

Attached: ganondorf darkness.png (715x472, 292K)

Majora's Mask 3D is a beautiful game. A lot of flaws yeah, but it's fucking great to look at.

Attached: majora.png (1500x890, 1.37M)

If those players never played the original and don't have any idea maybe, but it's still vastly inferior overall.
The sound effect that plays when the layers of Ganon's Tower make an impact is distorted.
Virtual Console is actually pretty damn accurate, it's got the least fuck ups of any rerelease.

Too bad everything else about it is complete shit and casualizes everything

it really is

Attached: 1557615117157.jpg (2472x1674, 1.07M)

>The sound effect that plays when the layers of Ganon's Tower make an impact is distorted.
That's a change in sound, give me changes to the actual GAMEPLAY, you know, what actually matters?

Everything? Nah. They definitely fucked up the ice arrows, Zora swimming, bosses, and saving, but everything else is great. Complain about the streamlined Bomber's Notebook all you want but being able to figure out everything without looking at a guide is nice.

>art is dawn of the first day
>3DS is as the moon is crashing
>N64 is night
????????

>Virtual Console is actually pretty damn accurate
You think the motherfucking Wii is powerful enough to accurately emulate the N64? It's all hacky HLE shit, same as any other emulator. It's probably less accurate in some places because Nintendo just made the Virtual Console "good enough" and shipped it.

Here's a vid to explain why you're wrong and a retard
youtube.com/watch?v=653wuaP0wzs

Just use this shit and you're good to go.
m64p.github.io/

It's painfully mediocre

All the major gameplay bugs have been ironed out, it's fine for the most part if that's all you care about. However, problems with what you see and hear are still extremely prevalent and shouldn't be overlooked.
From what I understand, commercial emulators and even the Gamecube versions are still somehow worse. That isn't to say that the VC version is perfect, it's just less shit than anything else out there. It makes sensse too considering Nintendo themselves made it and have detailed knowledge of how the N64 works better than anyone else at least.

oh you mean the video that has been in everyone's recommendations?

OP already said he used Mupen64plus, dumbass.

Yes, try watching it. Maybe you'll learn something for once

The ice arrows, swimming, bosses and oversaturated look to everything is just unforgivable to be honest.

Shut the fuck up dude. Get your own opinions.

i've already seen it. he mentions everything i said.

Problem solved then

Well, I do use the gui version which may run on a more older version, is it still okay?

it doesn't matter, oot runs fine on every n64 emulator made in the past 15 years

What a fucking tool

Play it, it did the thing first.

>t. actual NPCs

Nevermind, m64p is now stuck behind a Patreon wall despite the fact all the guy is doing is combing three free different pieces of software he had no hand in creating.

I got it off some guy's download on a forum, I aint paying for an emulator.

It controls and looks better. The only thing they flopped on is the Ganon fight, the moody lighting that made him feel sinister was taken away.

Just watch all the cutscenes related to Ganondorf before fighting him, you'll appreciate it more.

The worst thing is everything he's providing is already free, and he wants people to fucking pay him for preconfiguring it for you?

fucking lame, but here's an older version
emutalk.net/threads/57250-m64p-download-(2019-01-26)

>looks better
Subjective, I prefer resolutions above 240p and

a fitting screen ratio.

Im actually playing twilight princess right now for the first time on cemu emulator. Works much better than dolphin and plays like a dream.

I'd say the port is a double edged sword with the textures.

would it at all be possible to play the N64 version on a handheld like the switch or 3DS?

Yes, but it's pretty convoluted.
youtube.com/watch?v=7bgALYHtsXw

yeah not that long into the video and its definitely beyond me

If you're lucky, you might be able to buy one online. These types of devices have been around for years.

are you really that against the 3ds version?

I'll try that, thanks user

N64 displayed at 240p, you dunce

3ds version sucks massive dick

>soul vs soulless

No, but I'd just like to play both. I was just curious.

Haven't played the OOT 3ds remaster but the 3d version of Majora's Mask was definitely the best version I've played. As much as I liked the original version I hated the graphics and none of the things looked realistic at all and the posters were hard to see. The 3ds version was more clear and made things so much easier. And we can change controls, we can use motion controls which makes it so much easier. Like I have an easier time aiming my bow. My aiming was always bad in the n64 version and also in the 3d the sky and stars looks a lot more realistic and not fake. And we can ACTUALLY save the game whenever we want and not just when we start over. Song of Double Time is easier to and it gives us advantage. It's great for those who are not experienced or for those who are experienced that just wants to do it for fun. Having the invisible guard in Pirates Bay makes a lot more sense in the 3d version and the hand that asks for paper makes more sense too. I loved that they added gossip stones to give you hints and having bombers give people hints too for those who don't know what to do. Seeing the easter eggs is really awesome too. Doing the Goron race was easier too and same with the bosses. I had a lot more easier time with them. The only thing that was messed up was the swimming controls and the magic thing but at the same time we can change controls for that.

So if OOT's remake is anywhere near as good, I'd say get a 2ds and a copy for 85$

Set c-buttons to right stick, a and b to two of the face buttons, l r and z to shoulder buttons.

>flick c to use an item
Fuck no, it only works out for Ocarina playing.

youtube.com/watch?v=dqc4gno0Hso

cope

Alright, so I downloaded it, the Analog stick on my 360 pad aint working, wat do?

Attached: Screenshot_93.jpg (1599x899, 105K)

What are you gonna do, put a and b on the fucking shoulder buttons?

zoom zoom

Okay, that is working now. But there's no sound now except during the title screen

well, that's how nintendo has mapped it since the gamecube.

The overworld was never that big Wind Waker is the one with actual open world but let's not get into that shitty game

They were mapped to the face buttons too to get around this.
a=a
b=x
c-right=b
c-left=y
c-down=lb
c-up=rb
z=lt
r=rt
Simple.

I actually agree with that other user that said VC (specially on the Wii) is pretty much as good as it gets if you don't have a n64, if this was any other console I may think he's just being autistic but n64 is THAT bad, specially for Nintendo since every other console they have made has at least one very good emulator, not saying is unplayable but if we are talking about the best way to play these PCSX2-tier emulators aren't it.

Not in certain important scenes.

The definitive soul vs soulless

Virtual Console is just as shit as any other emulator though.

It really isn't, there are way less bugs on it for some reason.
