I liked that chapter well enough, the two before it I did not like though. Seeing Griffith and his army fight a tensionless battle against a bunch of nobodies that he couldn't possibly lose to for a whole two chapters, especially right after the the plot with Casca was reaching such an important point was really bad. It should have just cut to that government talk or to whatever Rickert's doing. It probably won't reflect as poorly on the manga if you're reading it in one go, but to have to wait for so long for those two chapters of that battle was not good.

Isnt the anime only 20 episodes long and leads up to guts losing his arm? Is reading the manga the only way to get the whole story?

There will never be a "whole story" because the dude will die before he finishes. Anime was only an arc or two.
