If you have 1-2 and the player on your left drops 3, you can Chi that. You can chi any combination you might have,
1-3, you can chi the 2.
2-3, you can chi the 1.

Riichi is a yaku, so you get 1 han from it no matter what hand you have.
Once you riichi, the tiles under the dora indicators also become dora indicators.

Riichii in itself is a yaku. If you win with a richii, you are allowed to check the uradora. The uradora is the underside of any dora indicators currently active. If there is one DI, you check 1, if there are two DI, you check 2. Uradora works exactly the same way as dora. If the ura dora is 1 pin, then any 2 pin in your hand is worth an extra han.

Hatsu deals into shanpon and tanki only, and since you already see two hatsu, the other person would have to have one or both of the remaining hatsu. 3m, on the other hand, deals into shanpon, kanchan, penchan, and tanki. Two lessons - don't trust suji of the riichi tile, and prioritise minimising the risk of dealing in over their potential value. Only when the risk of dealing in is the same do you then try and minimise the potential value.

The chaos only makes it better. Sucks for those who got cucked at the start though.

Not him but 5s is fine. You've already got five strong blocks so both 5s and 9m are unnecessary, but it's safer to hold onto 9m than 5s. If you then draw a safer tile like one of the winds, then you'd cut 9m and hold onto that instead until you reach tenpai.

He's got enough ryanmen waits already so he's keeping 9m as a safe tile

With three 4s visible, 2s is one chance so it's safer to hold onto for later. While there's still pretty much zero risk, you should discard the most dangerous tile that you don't need.

It also makes for a slightly better wait if he draws 45m or 23p

Let's say i get 3 or 6man and next turn 2 pin, dora tile. Then i can keep and adjust my wait for 1 and 4 sou. Besides 5 gives more information than 2 sou, it can make people think i had waits around sou and 3-6 man becomes a little bit safer.

I think few people were in tenpai for suuankou. My own attempts were sad excuse of a kokushi and shou suushi failed by bad draws. My most favourite hand was riichi tanyao sanshoku made in last few discards of orasu which propped me into quarterfinals.

I am overally proud - the only hands I dealt into were one tanyao nomi for 1500 and riichi dora 3 that i flunked because I was on my own dealer riichi.
I am definietly satisfied with my defensive play and reaching for magical sands in second match, where I bled out by tsumo payments and had 5800, only to win two consecutive haneman and oya mangan, which allowed me to qualify further,

I am disappointed in myself because the loss was completely avoidable had I paid more attention to the discard pool. It was fun though.

I think it was very unfair. A game where it's mostly about luck, you can't decide a winner in a single hanchan since even the biggest pros can get 4th place every now and then.

Unless the pro gets hit by a lucky yakuman (and I don't think there was any yakumans in the tournament) I'd be very very surprised to see a pro get 4th place against people playing here, no offense to anyone

This is the reason why best 3rd places managed to qualify further - even if you had bad luck with draws, by sole defensive play it was possible to secure your points and proceed ownwards.

In normal tournaments there is usualy just 8 hanchan with random people and the end is just comparing the total UMA points, which is totally unfun and kills the thrill of bracket play.

There's no way to make it fair unless we're talking about pro league or something. It should count the score, placings and other stuff. Just don't take it to heart. We get to play with each other for a bit and that's it. That's what we have been doing here for so many threads.

But those have nothing to do with winning. First place in Mahjong is like winning a game of football or hockey X:0. Cool? Yes. A necessary condition to win? No, not really.

i had over 10 third places in a row because i wouldn't get a hand together before tiles got risky, so i folded and gradually lost points to tsumo or while on dealer.
i started playing a bit more aggressively and ended up dealing in game after game in the first few rounds with no way of even knowing.
before this, i was on cloud 9 winning everything or coming in close second while never dealing in.

All simples, so 2-8. Pinfu, which has no such restrictions aside from not callin anything, also works. I think you need to call riichi for that to count, though. There's also only terminals and/or honors.

Mahjong literally looks like a new language to me. I've read some Saki and Akagi but I just liked seeing everyone flip shit when something cool happened, I didn't actually know what the fuck was happening. How difficult is it to get into? Is there an easy way to remember all the pieces and stuff?

Learning Mahjong is no different than learning a new language. The Basic and fundamentals can get used to in less than a week, but the terminologies can take a while longer depending how often you want, and am willing to learn. I recommend doing so because the English translations of Mahjong are bad, at least in my opinion.

chii/pon/kan(from discard) are the calls you should be looking to avoid, they open your hand which drastically lowers the value in most cases. Just try going for a fully closed hand of all simples (2-8) a few times and see how it goes.

Because youre losing almost all of your games, and getting shitty, open 1500 point hands its the reason

it makes your hand worth less or possibly not even winnable via having a lack of yaku
if you hand is not made a stage closer to winning by calling, don't call. there's some good reasons to call pon such as to snag doras or if you're going for yaku like toitoi or honitsu. but if your hand isn't really taking shape and you see the pon option show up and the best thing you could probably go for is a cheap tanyao, your hand is most likely shit, consider folding. pairs are a necessity to complete almost every hand anyway
