It’s on the edge. I’d say that a good 2000’s cutoff for retro would be that there are 2 gens between current gen and the one considered retro. So now that PS5 etc. are releasing, PS2 will become retro, and somewhere near the end of next decade PS3/360 will become retro when PS5 etc. release.

However, I feel that this classification method kind of falls apart if we go back to gens 3 and 4. I mean, if you asked someone whether SNES was retro when people played with PS2, they surely would have answered yes, same with NES when people were playing with 5th gen. But on the other hand, the differences between consoles are smaller now, so it makes sense that it takes more time to become retro than it back then. I mean, the gap between something like 2004-2019 is much smaller than the gap between 1985-2000.

For me the definition is more how the game looks like "fundamentally" (because of the limitation of the hardware at it's time). When we can all agree Ps1 and it's early 3D is retro. I doubt anyone will be able to say Ps3 is closer to Ps1 than any new console in the future, because there's no room for such amelioration. Ps3 is too close to realistic to ever be retro

Trust me, technology will move on and in some day, PS3 games will look anything but realistic. It’s easy to think that we’re at the ”end of history” with vidya and that everything is going to be just the same with better resolutions, but there will be leaps forward that we probably can’t even imagine now. I cannot imagine a future 50 years forward where we look at PS3 and then go ”yeah, it looks almost the same as games do now if you just upped the resolution”.

But sure, reaching that point will take far longer than it took to reach from 5th gen to 7th gen.

One thing that should definitely be retro and it's silly it isn't allowed on /vr/ yet, is the GBA. Hell, an argument could even be made for the PSP at this point since it's 15 years old, and it's not like Vita is getting a successor to "prove" PSP is retro now.

There are, of course, exceptions, and there are a small number of games since the mid-90s that do count as a "retro"-type experience; however, these are not taken as a typical top-"quality" gaming experience of the time, and thus we must conclude that retro gaming is pre-1995, and the PS2, a console full of fucking style-over-substance trash, is definitely not retro. /vr/ shouldn't even have the fucking PS1/N64 or games of its time.

I think considering there are 18 year olds born in 2001 i dont think many of them would have experienced the 6th gen at length, rather the 7th gen was the primary. The only console i experienced for the 6th gen at the time was the game boy. Wii/360/DS/Pc games of the era, where all my primary childhood gaming memories (im 21)

Xbox and Gamecube feel more retro/boomer since they fell out of favor pretty quickly, wheras the ps2 was still relevant for many long after the ps3 was introduced. There would be a lot of early zoomers born 1995-1999 who started out with a ps2, but whose family couldn't afford the ps3, instead sticking with the ps2, getting late releases for that console towards the end of the 2000s.
