I did both and the right is a huge improvement. Back then if you wanted to play 5v5 against a team, you would have to first contact 4 people, wait until everyone is ready, then go on some IRC channel and start searching for teams that want to play. The advertised skill level was often off, the servers were badly configured with big data loss. I feel nostalgic thinking about it but it was not good

I don't know about overwatch but I went from Silver 2 to Global in CSGO and it was fun. My biggest mistake was taking the game too seriously, thats where the fun goes away. My best memories are playing with my bad IRL mates or queuing up at 2AM with my friend I spent the last 5 hours getting drunk with.

No, I will have to agree with the other user here. I was playing 1.6 and Source very actively when I was in middle and high school and I was always the youngest person on the server. by far. The communities in CS were made up mostly from university students, middle to late 20s and even middle 30s. I remember multiple teachers, police officers, sysop admins on the servers I visited. Some were already married.
There were banter but only in closed communities where people knew each other. If you went up a random server and started yelling nigger they wouldve kick you in no time. In fact for many servers if you just went up and started shit talking they would kick you. The communities were pretty closed back then, everyone knew every regular.
Xbox Live was the platform that got famous for 8 year olds who want to fuck your mother. It was pretty looked down even back then. The CS community on PC was way more mature. Even if you are nostalgic about it now, XboxLive was very much looked down back then because of the amount of kids

When matchmaking is the only option, there is no chance for the game to ever create a community because it's all so temporary. You finish a game, then potentially never see any of those players again. It also gives developers a monopoly on their game's multiplayer.

Not really, I still regularly play all sorts of custom servers in CSGO, CoD 4, L4D 2, Rising Storm 2, etc. etc.
I don't get why consoleniggers get so triggered by server browsers and custom games, I remember MGSV was supposed to have a map editor and from what I can tell that never materialized.
I would have loved to see some crazy interesting mods and custom maps made in MGSV with Fox Engine as a base.
