It's not at all well written, because it's barely written at all. They just tell you or imply some events and then you're left to make them seem cool in your head.

Harry Potter is far superior than anything GRRM has ever made. Most obviously, they actually ended.

But it goes more than that though. HP works on a ton of different levels. From working with childhood fears and turning them into fantastic stories, to the surprising socio-political commentary and the way Harry deals with being famous. It absolutely deserves all the praise and attention it gets.

A Song of Ice and Fire does not. It only became relevant because of the show, which in turn was only relevant because of the sorry state of modern television.

And that's a good thing. Games shouldn't cater to every single person on earth.

Tolkien had a brilliant skill to make his writing feel like it had been translated from some ancient classical language. Being a linguist, his prose was generally high-quality, even when describing something as mundane as vegetation.

length doesn't automatically make a good series. on top of that, I don't even know what your argument is, there are two much better series than aSoIaF that I can think of offhand that have over double the wordcount just in their mainline series and in the case of one of them, close to triple if you count all of the sidestories that are directly related to the worldbuilding of the series itself. You can write a good series that is longwinded, but the two are not one and the same, many times they fuck up near the end like what happened with the final book of the Black Company series.

Such literature nerds should suggest their superior alternatives to the classics of fantasy literature. If they want to make a stylistic choice to write using economical modern prose then I'm all for it, but so often it's the opposite. GRRM's characters often smatter in Middle English affectations, and his descriptive prose is a whole lot more rambling and directionless than Tolkien's.

I remember reading a Myiazaki interview where he stated that he created a whole, cohesive story and Lore for Dark Souls, then removed some bits to keep the players guessing.
This idea came to him from the English fantasy books he would read as a kid. He couldn't understand english perfectly so he just made up the stuff he couldn't translate. This is genius and isn't lazy by any means since you do have to create a complete story first, and carefully choose what to remove to make it the most interesting.

I have and it's one of my favourite books, it feels a lot more grown up than LOTR. Also the Christopher Lee audiobook of it is fantastic.

I like it sometimes but I like more informative historical things. Reading a succinct and clear breakdown of a battle in history is more fun, so I look for political and historical fiction based on realistic things with descriptions and explanations of mechanisms in universe. I was the guy watching the last season of GoT who stood up laughing when ballista shots annihilated boats. I also like interpersonal conflict and social contingencies whether it be husband and wife or generation versus generation. Long descriptions of settings and places are good and all but they get boring. Like how in American Psycho the page long descriptions of what people are wearing is boring.

They drop a lot of breadcrumbs of lore but its left intentionally vague so people can get invested and come up with ideas and theories from isn't competent enough to actually come up with on their own. The few plot threads that do resolve tend to resolve in more questions. Almost everything is intentionally vague, and sometimes even contradictory. Really, the whole point of it is a low effort way to get lore/story focused players invested in a game that's primarily about mechanics, world design, and atmosphere by throwing out some random vague nonsense and hoping imagination can fill the gaps.

One need not even set their sights as lofty as Tolkien to point out GRRM's shortcomings, actual medieval literature beats him at his own game, go read Le Morte D'Arthur, I think it has almost everything the fat fuck tried to do but far better and was written by an actual violent medieval rouge and criminal.

These incorporeal item descriptions, written by some nameless thing, are completely and utterly detached from the world surrounding them. There's no personality, no character behind these obfuscated, dull flavour texts, beyond the contrived cryptic style employed by the writers. They rarely serve any purpose for the "plot" other than to give the player a very nebulous understanding of the games universe.

Which is really possibly the worst way any storytelling medium can build its world. It's both frustratingly lazy and incredibly tedious.

I suppose that's why the youtube souls lore phenomenon took off so strongly. Anyone who's willing to accept an incorporeal, detached method of storytelling, certainly won't object to relying on data compilers, analysts and "theorists", to spoonfeed them the games plot. Like someone compiling notes about each chapter of a book for you to skim through, but worse.

Sekiro of course, tried something different. It succeed in some respects, having far better characters than any prior souls-like, and a generally more coherent narrative as a whole. Yet, it also felt unadventurous, too safe.

Middle earth is a fairly unique and even grounded setting, if you close your eyes on races you can even call it "low fantasy" due to incredible rarity of magic and subtlety/weirdness of what magic there is, also magical creatures are pretty rare too, dwarfes and humans are kinda tame but elves have different overtones to them being literal descendants of gods instead of just some forest hippies (though to an extent all races are descendants iirc, elves are just closest who still live), and uruks are totally unique race that have nothing in common with usual everyday green orcs except for being brutish. Hell, even warhammer orcs look lame in comparison, and those orcs are psionic mushrooms procreating by spores.
Tolkien isnt responsible for the sorry state of fantasy, on the contrary, he was the sole ray of light before everything went to the shitter. Say thanks to all the nerds who played dnd with their smelly friends and then started making cheap fantasy dungeon crawlers en masse when the costs of average game development were just having a basement and some beer.
