not at all, considering is doesn't fucking exist
Honestly after playing some recent indie Metroidvanias like Hollow Knight I'm kind of worried that Metroid itself isn't going to be able to stand up to them. The genre has evolved a lot in the last few years.
I don't care if Metroid 5 isn't as good as some random indie metroidvania, none of those games will let me kill metroids, rogue chozo, federation supersoilders/bioweapons or will let me play as Samus Aran
Think they'll have you kill a Metroid this time?
If it's set after Fusion then I guess there could be some federation clones but it's getting ridiculous in regards to how many times they revive them.
Think it'll be revealed this year or next?
Aren't we supposed to be getting a 3DS Fusion remake? The ending of Samus Returns sort of hinted at that.
We've already reached this point. 2D Metroid has become the basic bitch of it's own genre. Sakamoto spent too long fucking around and now the fans have grown up to become the competition.
That wasn't hinting at a remake, it was just to smooth out the continuity a bit by retroactively having X parasites show up.
Sakamoto already confirmed the next Metroid will be a new one, not a remake.
I just want a pixel art aesthetic, the Samus Returns 2.5d does not work well imo(and is pretty ugly :/ )
I think that's partly down to the 3DS hardware, a lot of stuff was garishly coloured and whatnot to make up for the low resolution
That was just nostalgic fanservice. Also Fusion doesn't need a remake.
I agree, as much as I appreciate SR and Sakamoto for trying to make a proper 2D Metroid, it wasn't anything amazing in terms of gameplay. The Aeion stuff was only "alright" and the platforming was the most constricted it's ever been in the series, I think; complete 180 from Super's momentum based movement.
2.5D games can look great, look at Tropical Freeze. SR was just down to being on 3DS.
Pixel shit is not going to happen for Metroid again.
My uncle works at Nintnedo, so I've been able to demo the pre-beta. Trust me, you won't be disappointed! It'll be worth the wait.
SR's a weird case because you can tell that quite a few of the game's major issues just came from the devs trying to be faithful to the original game. It'll be interesting to see how they manage a totally blank canvas.
I don't think they'll go back to pixel art but something hand drawn would be nice
Think they should keep the melee from Samus Returns?
Doesn't even have to be a counter.
I'd be okay with her just summoning a laser blade straight out of her arm canon for people who want to fight up close.
I doubt it will disappoint, I wonder what Samus's fully restored suit will look like since it will be a combination of her Chozo and Metroid DNA, I also wonder what the rogue Chozo will look like after so many years have passed unless they do something like what Halo did and shove their souls in their tech, I also wonder will the X return since SR hints that they have some form of connection to Aeion which I see coming back in the near future?
No, Sakamoto said the next 2D game will be a new game, not another remake.
I'd like to see the counter come back, but it needs serious improvement. It was fine in the Metroid fights where only a few attacks could be parried and there was some level of risk vs reward involved, but against regular enemies it sucked dick.
I have mixed feelings about the counter. It is great for bosses but sucks if you are pretty much forced to use it against every single regular enemy, but if they don't force it then it is a waste of a button that could be used for something else.
They just need to give the enemies more attacking options. If every enemy had one attack that could be countered and two that couldn't then that would be a good start.
>The genre has evolved a lot
I mean not really? Hollow Knight doesnt really do anything that Super Metroid didnt. It pretty much follows the metroidvania formula to a tee.
Either way the artstyle is a bit too tumblr for my tastes.
>Still hoping for a good Metroid game
>The franchise only has two (2) good games and one of them is pinball
Delusional.
Considering we have had and eqiupment swapping system in Metroid before perhaps it could be integrated as one of several possible options?
With that button having a side equipment being equipped to the button with the melee options being a one that could be swapped too?
Having a dedicated utility button so stuff like the visor and possibly new equipment could be brought back to 2D without having to switch away from he Arm canon like in Super Metroid.
Evil Chozo?
That seems like a recipe for the end of the galaxy.
Play PrimeHack
Or hand drawn, that would be fine too
Can't wait
It's canon easy as shit to propagate new metroids, and there's even an in-universe reason for them to exist with the X. Fusion's ending also has the Federation attempting to go full Umbrella Corp. on the universe with Metroid and X derived weaponry. Of course they'll be back.
Well it IS a remake and it suffers from the original's restricted world design and terrible boss fights (Diggernaut and Ridley are fine, though I prefer AM2R's new bosses).
Metroid 5, IF it ever comes out, probably won't reinvent the wheel either, but I'd rather have a decent sequel to Fusion than another failed experiment like MOM.
Tbh only Hollow Knight has really impressed me as a Metroidvania. I didn't find the other indie Metroidvanias that great. That said, my main concern with Metroid 5 is that it will be similar to Fusion or SR rather than Super. I don't need a massive amount of glitches that can be used to sequence break but I want a big world to explore in a natural feeling way (with some possible sequence breaking). That said, what are all your thoughts on fast travel systems? A lot of new Metroidvanias have them (SR has them although given the highly linear nature of it I tend to ignore that as it was more a necessity). Do you want them in Metroid 5?
Link?
Damn I wish Hollow Knight had more satisfying base movement.
so does this rebalance the enemies and bosses or am I going to be an unstoppable killing machine
They should let you counter while running. Could be fun
I kind of like backtracking, but I don't know why. But I'd be fine with a fast travel system.

It's a fork of Dolphin 100% based off of Prime Trilogy for Wii, sometimes mouse is better than lock on, other times lock on makes it easier to hit weakspots, so the balance is a mixed bag
I think it works well in Super and other Metroids because they balance new and old areas fairly well. They also give you new skills that tend to improve mobility making backtracking quicker. I hated backtracking in Hollow Knight because of how slow you move. The game is good but there are definitely pacing issues. At times the large map feels like filler.
Yeah, I think you hit the nail on the head there. Backtracking allows me to test my new abilities in familiar scenarios, which is neat.

sorry, permanent link now
I think with the right world design fast travel isn't really necessary. Fast travel would be pointless in a game like Super, for example, but in SR the map is laid out in a way that basically makes it necessary.
