On PC it's personal preference, I think. I like the middle ground that 144hz 1440p gives. You need the same level of hardware as the 4k 60 FPS guys, but you get good looking games and fast FPS.
My friend rolls with a 4k setup and I would say mine is superior.
On console I don't think you have a choice. These guys might break 60 FPS this year and catch up with the SNES days! I used my PS1 and 2 more than my PC back then but things have changed

I highly doubt it will be able to handle ray tracing or run games in 8k. Consoles have always been the poor man's choice, but with the recent increased costs of GPUs and CPUs, there is just no way a console will be able to deliver ray tracing or 4k (much less 8k) gaming. Even with a 2080ti, 4k or ray tracing are basically still a meme due to the massive performance hits. Expect the PS5 and nextbox to deliver "upscaled" versions of these features, while running games in a "cinematic" 20 - 30 FPS.

Even then, they couldn't get a stable framerate Almost all game its 25-30 and even lower. I highly doubt this new console will get that shit sorted out.

Same. I just finished my new build, and I chose the 144hz at 1440p route as well (i9 and RTX 2080). I can play everything on ultra with 144 FPS. It's beautiful. Turn on ray tracing on BFV though, and frames drop to the 40 - 70 FPS range, which by comparison is a much worse experience.
Everything I read about 4k gaming indicate that the performance hit is BIG. Since an RTX 2080 nails 1440p 144hz, I didn't see the need to spring for the Ti.
How the fuck can Sony claim they'll have 8k gaming, when even a $1,200 GPU struggles with 4k?

Considering resolutions are standardized as fuck now why not just make it a standard that every game has to run at 1080 and the refresh rate of the TV? this whole new console = new resolution thing feels so obsolete now.
I was tempted user, but $400 more didn't seem necessary at 1440p. Like I said, my 2080 already kills 1440p with everything on ultra. Only reason to go with a 2080ti is if you want to go the 4k route, but even still, you'll struggle to get 60 FPS.

First hardware editions aren't usually the best, it's got an ok backlog but depending on how much you're willing to pay (and if you're ok with the hardware maybe being fucky) i'd probably just get a 4 and then wait a few years

Yes. I have a huge nvme as my main game/boot one, a spare 500 sata from my old PC, and a 2 TB regular HDD. I only use the HDD to store music/shows/porn/animes and my rom collection.

It's supposed to be next gen, not current gen where we already have 4k. Consoles last years, if they didn't have 8k, you know it would be shit. They could at least always optimize frame rate in the future.
I can't play anything off hdds, paradox games take minutes to boot, tw Warhammer takes minutes to load a battle and load back into campaign, meaning during a two hour play sessions you'll easily lose 30-40 minutes watching the loading screen. It's just not doable wasting up to an hour everyday waiting for your shit to load. Of course not every game is like that, but many are.

By having the same shit since both will have very similar GPUs and CPUs, and by extension since they both will have a Zen 2 CPU they'll have PCIe 4..0 support, so SSD speeds should be the same. Same with the BD Drive, and since both will have HDMI 2.1 they both can support 8k.
Real time ray tracing is still a meme for consumers since it'll be for minor things so far, and since both have Navi, they'll both support it.

They have the full documentation and blue prints of the Cell though. Pretty sure they can pull something off. The FPU is freely programmable. They still could add a coprocessor. Cell is very old and large tech now. The PS3 GPU was just a Nvidia chip. Still pretty convinced Sony could pull that off if they really want to.
