All of the iconic characters are old characters like Mario, Sonic, and Link (and MAYBE Crash if I wanted to be generous and not make fun of Sony for being unable to create a mascot). The last character to become iconic was Master Chief, and Halo came out in 2001, which is almost TWO DECADES ago. The character is very nearly 20 years old at this point and not a single character after him has become iconic, and honestly, even Master Chief is barely iconic.

This is not an argument of game quality or sales, it is purely on the cultural impact of the character. Master Chief is still someone that most normies would know. My parents know what Halo is and they've never even touched a video game. If I showed them Kratos, or Nathan Drake, or bitch from horizon zero dawn they would just be confused.

To me a video game icon is something that surpasses just being a video game character and becomes something that extends to other aspects of culture or entertainment (in a meaningful and successful way).

It doesn't matter how good God of War is, it doesn't matter how much it sells. What matters is if the character of Kratos can transcend the game he is in and become a household name like Mario or Link. Clearly, at this point, he has not, even if the games are amazing. There are a lot of games nowadays that make a shitload of money and get great reviews, but almost no one could name the main character.

These same people are the ones who grow up and just go from AAA game to AAA game.

I've always looked at it as an adventure game. A story game. I don't necessarily care much about gameplay on console games anyway, aiming with a controller is absolute garbage. I think if you've played since 1 it's easy to keep yourself entertained and see where the characters end up, back then the game felt like something that had never been done before and the characters were fresh. I unnorinically thing Nathan is a great although maybe a bit generic character, can't go wrong with a Indiana Jones personality type.
