Shin Megami Tensei IV is six years old today.
Six years later, how do you feel about it Yea Forums? I think it's okay, good but inferior to previous entries.

It's pretty fun
Playing it for the first time now. Just got to shinjuku
Not sure what to do now because I ended up fusing in a way such that pretty much none of my party demons have any healing spells
On the plus side putting all my points into luck everytime was a great idea, I was able to beat a domain boss 20 levels higher than my own thanks to hama
Bought it on release and still havent finished it. The unclean section is like a big grind casual filter. I had no problems with strange journey or DDS1 and 2, but this game is a struggle no matter how many new files I make. Maybe its just my shit build since I went full magic with no agility.
What section are you refering to exactly? The very beginning is easily the hardest part of the game. After the second boss the game becomes arguably the easiest mainline game since it's so easy to break it with a MAG build.
A much better atmosphere and plot progression than Apocalypse, even if the plot isn't all that good here either. The alternate timelines were kino. Most of the endings kind of suck, but they do have implications that have a way of sticking with you.
needs to get ported to the switch along with all the other DS SMT games desu
Best plot, setpieces, setting, music, atmosphere and exploration of the series.
The UI is exceptional and doesn't get nearly enough praise.
I also think Smirk was pretty good at keeping you afraid even at higher levels.
The art, difficulty curve, VN-style story presentation, guest party member system and alignment system hold the game back from being a 10/10, but it is still bold and memorable.
As soon as you descend into Tokyo after beating Medusa. My last file I was getting raped at the tournement battle. If there is any new area beyond Tokyo, I havent seen it. I always get fucked there. Everythings so goddamn strong so I end up grinding it out since encounters are everywhere.
Anyone can play them on citra, there's really no reason too and making the dual screen work would be annoying I imagine.
I don't like the world map with enemies slowing down movement. I ended up giving up, not because it was confusing, but because I hated using that to move around
The 3rd person areas were nice though, I hope SMT5 is entirely made of maps like that
Weird, Medusa is usually the last challenging part beside one boss in the late game who can be kind of tough. Maybe just try grinding for better spells and fusing stronger stuff. Remember to get those buffs and debuffs user.
Just do some side quests and fuse more demons.
You're not supossed to enter the tournament as soon as you get to Tokyo. That shit needs a good team
I would basically do everything the bar had on hand, kill that fucker in the big circular lake area. I even killed that boss where you need to protect an allied hunter. I grinded for ages to get stronger demons and second level spells, but I got fucked sideways on the tournement. I even tried it on the easier difficulty
It took me awhile to get adjusted to the game, but I actually liked it a lot. My only issues with the game boil down to:
>Alignment split is retarded, you can see where the story was unfinished
>Smirk was busted
>Not enough focus on Mikado after you depart to Tokyo, and on top of that you can't explore it like Tokyo
>Story was sadly unfinished, the full vision wasn't incorporated properly
Otherwise, I had a lot of fun. Blasted/Infernal Tokyo were utterly based, and I want to see more of that in the future.
I would fuck Jonathan, that's been my only opinion on it
i was just playing an hour ago. Just got
to tennozu or some shit like that, lvl 72 and 250 magic.
>how do you feel about it
I think the map fucking sucks, it's hard to tell if there's an entrance or not sometimes and the side missions require you to know where shit is, like "go to Tokyo tower" how tf was I supposed to know that Tokyo tower was in that roppongi area? I guess they really made this game with the Japanese in mind.
>Port
I'll wait for an inevitable remake sometime in the next decade.
> fused to shit with no heal
Well you need one further in the game
>that lucky Hama cuz luck attribute
It won’t last forever
I thought it was pretty damn nice how the regions of Tokyo were like pseudo dungeons with the way they were designed. Running through locations like Shinjuku, and Shibuya was aesthetic as hell. I hope SMTV expands on this even further, because I enjoy some good exploration. More interactivity with the environment would be cool too.
What is older SMT games?
I didn't do the tournament until way later, until I explored almost all of Tokyo. It was obvious the quest wasn't meant to be done in the early game. I can't remember the level I was at when I did it
Rephrase
What is megami tensei? What is Majin Tensei? What is nocturne?
Sorry but what exactly are you asking?
> elaborate the alignment split cuz everyone says this about the game and I haven’t fully finished the game yet. Unless you are talking about smt’s General alignment mechanic.
> smirk busted
Yes it as and it got fixed in final
>not enough focus on mikado
Expected from Atlus
> story unfinished
I’d like source on what other visions they had for the game
It’s trash
4A is marginally better and 3 and SJ are a million times better
It was meant to be
Funny, back when Nocturne came out people were saying it was garbage and was going to ruin the series.
3 and 4 are both equally unfinished games, and they're both good but not as good as they could have been.
I'm really only familiar with Persona, how do SMT games differ? I know they use the same spell names and a lot of the same enemies and stuff. Is the core gameplay the same, but just in very different settings? I vaguely remember Digital Devil Saga and how it's about some kind of futuristic soldiers which is obviously different from Japanese high schoolers.
I was pissed SJR was just for the 3DS.
Anyway, IV was my first SMT, pretty great experience overall. Got me in DeSu, Soul Hackers, SJ. When the inevitable port happens, I hope they give it IVA's gameplay since that's arguably better while the rest of trash. I like IV's world and music a lot and going from Mikado to Tokyo and just wandering around was amazing. Nemissa best girl and SJ best overall though.
Do not bully the bobo.
I think the cover art is kino. Really liked the game despite it's flaws.
>Elaborate
In essence
>Flynn, Walter (Chaos hero), Jonathan (Law hero) go through alternate universes of Tokyo together
>Blasted Tokyo is an utter wasteland filled with poison because YHVH nuked it to the ground
>Infernal Tokyo is a flaming cityscape where demons reign supreme and humans are used as food sources of sorts
>Neither alignment rep questions or doubles back on their ideologies and proceed to fuse with Lucifer and the Archangels as if they didn't experience the utter extremes of their alignment ideologies
Yeah.. The alignment split is retarded.
>Source on the vision
Kaneko wrote a long plot summary for IV, but a lot of it had to be cut due to the game being long enough as is.
The core gameplay is similar but less forgiving and more in-depth, and it doesn't really have a story/VN focus like Persona does.
>SMT I, II and III haven't been remade in the past 25 years
>thinks IV will be remade in the next years
People say this about new entry in the series, and it's frankly retarded.
>Nocturne was shit, it's overrated!
>The IV duology is trash, irredeemable!
I'm pretty sure the same shit will happen with V, and people will double back years later and say it was amazing.
I just wished the game had actual dungeons
Also the whole save anywhere+mp regen apps really trivializes the resource management aspect of JRPGs. After you get the MP regen app you can just blow all your MP every encounter and not have to think about it.
Fun game though otherwise.
4 - Rushed Potential: The Game.
4A - Rushed Pacing: The Game
P5 - Falls Apart In The Second Half: The Game
Even though I think personafags are cancer I will tell you what you need to know. Core gameplay isn’t the same as fagsona and your other party members are demons (the same ones from persona), and yes the setting is entirely different than your dating simulator.
Damn user, you must be really new. Nothing wrong with that, I'm happy to help anyone that is genuinely curious.
>MegamI Tensei
This can refer to two things. The first being the name for the general series, often this is abbreviated as "Megaten", and refers to any game in the series. The second is that it may refer to the original and first game in the series, Megami Tensei on the Famicom from 1987. When referring to the game (or it's sequel, Megami Tensei II) people will abbreviate them as "MT" or "MTI/MTII".
>Majin Tensei
Spinoff series that started on the snes. These are a series of srpgs which contain elements from the mainline series, similar to the Devil Survivor games. There's three games in the series but only the second game is available in English via a fan translation.
>Nocturne
Used to refer to Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne on the ps2.
Hope this helps, feel free to ask anything else user.
To be fair this happens in literally everything, even if the games are flawed Megaten (the whole scope) is the only gaming franchise I truly love
>The UI is exceptional and doesn't get nearly enough praise.
I think one of the main reasons why I played through the game 3 times was because of how clean the UI looked
Fucking monkey
Persona is a visual novel version of SMT. Imagine Persona 5 but it takes place almost entirely on palaces, no time management or dating, with slightly different negotiation, fusion and battle systems. The story has mutliple endings, and not the same kind Persona has, but completely different routes and not just "bad" and "true" endigs
I love Burroughs
Answer the call son of man.
I got it on release and had a blast
What I don't like in Apocalypse is the fact that it's based on neutral ending instead of chaos, which means that bitch Isabeau is alive
They have no real reason to remake SMT I/II outside of doing it for an anniversary celebration. They need them badly though since they're heavily outdated, and didn't release outside of Japan.
>Nocturne
What do you think Maniax is? It's an enhanced version of the original. Even then, the game has a lot of unfinished events and aspects that didn't make it into the final. The director for V, Yamai said they were waiting for an opportunity to remake Nocturne recently though, so.. All in all though, I'd say IV has a medium chance of being remade, years from now.
Ahh I see, does the Tokyo part happen near the end then cuz I’ve only remembered seeing the final bosses
P5 falls apart quicker than the second half, Summer is just when the pieces fall off into the event horizon
lmao you sound like a huge faggot. I have played thousands of video games, I'm not a "personafag"
I'm confused. It sounds like you're agreeing with me
>Persona = 70% Visual Novel, 30% Gameplay, more lighthearted with focus on friendship, and the growth of the soul. More slice of life focused.
>SMT = 40% Story, 60% Gameplay, focus on philosophical ideologies, religion, mythology, and has more focus on gameplay.
This is an over simplification, but I'm tired.
Man I just hate how in 4A all the fun world building and side quests and stuff we're gone. It's literally a linear game now. Actually you hardly see anything of the world. I get it was suppose to build on from 4 but it just makes 4A feel empty. The new world map is a godsend though.
Think they tried dumbing the games down to make it somewhat inclusive for casuals but they could have just done it so that the app is only used on easy
Agree in the sense that we won't be getting remakes for a long time, if at all? Yes. Except..
>In the past 25 years
You mean, the past decade?
I like how the wings meet pixie's back in this picture
(another user who has something to add to this post)
>Persona = hanging out with your friends and dating them
>SMT = killing your friends because they don't agree with you
I just meant the 25 years as in for the length of the series none of the mainlone games has received a proper remake outside of maybe SJ. I haven't had a chance to play SJR but I know it has new art, cutscenes and qol changes
I don't wanna bully I wanna smash
Just beat this
The friendship is my power shit it literally P4 tier
Pros though:
Krishna
Dagda
Final dungeon
Overall the monotheistic vs polytheistic backdrop of the game was cool to see in the cyclical nature of the law vs chaos shit
>a-user I’m r-really not a personafag
>makes a post saying familiar with person and wants to know what SMT is like
Well if you played thousands of games then you’d fucking know how SMT plays but regardless if you’re only familiar with datingsona then I have the utmost power to call you a personafag, sorry user
>Not choosing the White ending.
>Actual dungeons
You mean with gimmicks? Otherwise there were dungeons in the game.
>Reverse Hills Factory
>Tsukiji Kongai
>Pluto Palace
>Lucifer's Palace
>Purgatorium
I think I'm missing something, but whatever.
All the routes have new endings if you beat Amala 2.0
>Actual Isabeau lewds.
Hey Flynn, we still going out for dinner? I wanna dine on some pig's blood.
>The friendship is my power shit it literally P4 tier
You didn't go Bonds, did you? You didn't betray the only man who never did you wrong, did you?
While they aren't remakes, Nocturne Maniax and SJR do have a lot of enhancements from their base games.
I'm aware. I really want to play it, but I don't want to go back to the 3DS and I don't have much free time. I'll probably just pick up the anniversary edition for my collection and emulate it later in the summer.
I feel like 4A needed 4 endings.
Dark - Dagda
Light - Bonds
Dark - Bonds
Light - Dagda
There are a few and at least one scanned doujin, but anything that isn't Persona is unlikely to get much attention.
>You didn't betray the only man who never did you wrong, did you?
Of course not, I would never betray my one true friend
You’re trying to hard to fit in
Better way to state it is
Persona = kids who fully don’t understand the world and want to save it by bringing justice
SMT = dwells on themes of human nature and where at times justice appears but then gets shot down to create dark bitter atmosphere
He did you wrong by forcing the spirit knife bullshit for chances at armor upgrade kits
>dark bonds
How would that work?
>Needing 4 endings
That's really unnecessary. What would Dark Bonds and Light Anarchy even look like? Although, there should have been a Krishna route.
Huh?
>Willingly letting yourself get manipulated by a demon under the idea that 'you owe him one'
Never should have trusted a human, I'll stab any demon in the back if it suits me.
So was she in love with Flynn?
I know, I'm just pointing out to that user that said he'd wait for a remake that he's going to be waiting for a long time
Tell Ryan to stop calling me a Personafag
>Murder Dagda and Danu births a new one who's into sniffing sunflowers and licking rainbows
Dark Bonds already exists
Will he return for SMT V bros. The series has never been the same without him. Just let him at least write the script fuckkkkkk
Actually yes
Honestly it came from the massacre route being way too edgy.
Dark - Bonds is securing what you have today. While you don't need friends or anything, you'd rather keep the world as is so you'll be the strongest through your own power.
Light - Anarchy is creating a better world for humans and keeping yourself humble. You'll create a world without demons and oversee it as it's creator.
I'm tired and it sounds way better in my head, these are my thoughts however.
You know she would look ten times better with a different haircut. She looks like a pageboy.
The only thing edgy about it is what they tacked on after you kill each party member. They could have chose to help you and gone peacefully into the next world after record scratch bit the dust, or maybe even just arrive in it as themselves rather than as recycled souls.
Reminder that Space Marine always succeeded.
Flynn! Mom says it's my turn to play fortnite on the Xbox!
Disgusting trips trying to lead people astray. Bobo's hair is cute and the little tassels are practically made for pulling on while you pound her ass into the sheets.
I mean killing Fujiwara, Skins, and the rest of the hunters. The whole keeping Flynn and another soul as a GODSLAYER puppet, Nanashi's evil smirk at the end. It just feels weird if you were playing as a light type dude and you go through this route.
Kaneko is nothing more than an advisor now.
I’m pissed SJR isn’t remake in 3D
It literally screeches needs to be 3D with stunning design
Killing the last of the humans in Tokyo is entirely on Stephen, to be fair. But there's no excuse for Flynn, honestly. Dagda himself said Flynn was basically useless as a Godslayer because Krishna brainwashed him instead of convincing him to fight for his cause.
I choose to believe Godslayer Flynn exists purely so you can pick Isabeau as your Goddess for the netori end.
ONE MORE REJECTED GOD
Tokyo had a fantastic atmosphere. There was a that while the world was hellish and dark, humanity was still pulling through and trying to make it.
>Killing the last of the humans in Tokyo is entirely on Stephen
He didn't do shit. All he did was tell them what Nanashi was doing so they had a chance to defend themselves. He knew they were going into a losing battle but he still felt they should at least be given a chance.
That’s this games biggest strength
It can be Persona 4 part 2 or The edgiest SMT ever
I thought it was bullshit that it cost ~10 more than most 3DS games, though the added goodies were nice. I loved how great the game expands once you leave Mikado
I already follow Dadga
Friends make my skin crawl
The Chad Marine always wins
On topic somewhat, but how big is the .CIA file for PQ2?
Vending Machine you mean.
Stephen doesn't give a flying fuck about humanity, my guy. He's playing 4D chess with the Great Will.
I cheesed through it and had a good time.
2,7GB IIRC
He cares, it's just that when infinite universes you need to accept that not every one is going to work best.
Honestly I feel they shouldn't have used him in IV and IV:A. He should have just been kept to SMTI and SMTII in that single continuity. I feel like having a human character in megaten THAT powerful just makes it feel like shonen shit with debates on power levels, something I feel is above megaten.
MAKE SHURE YOU BRING MORE MAHCA NEXT TIME
Blame the fact that Phys skills use mp, making physical demons shit for most of the game
Persona games are SMT games and also you are a fag.
youtube.com
We need moar like this in SMT V
>Yaso Magatsuhi's gas is implied to contain aphrodisiac qualities
>Isabeau probably ran off to fantasize about Flynn and pleasure herself.
We need more hard rock and metal tracks
youtube.com
Fuck why was Apocolypse so empty compared to 4. It's so hard to go back now because of the QoL changes.
>Walter starts raving about his fear of fish and runs away
>Jonathan curls up on the floor and starts acting like a cat in heat
>Bobo runs off
>Flynn tears off his trousers and starts hollering like an ape
YASO MAGATSUHII-IIII
This shit was fucking fire
Darksynth would actually work really well with mainline Megami Tensei. Like this just screams Demon boss fight.
youtube.com
Because it was originally supposed to be bonus content but then they thought the story was big enough to warrant its own game, then they forgot to add sidestories and handwaved it away as Flynn's group having solved all the big problems, leaving you with fetch quests.
youtu.be
Home...
Asahi was my favourite character in all of SMT. I haven't completed DDS or Raidou yet so that may change.
I completely failed to understand what this demon's physical form was supposed to represent, or how it tied back in any way to the original deity from Japanese folklore. Can anyone help me out?
You know what SMT needs more of? You got that right. IT NEEDS MORE FUCKING RAPE!
>inane rambling about how she's known nanashi longest and has more personality while Toki frots on Nanashi's leg intensifies in the distance
Mokoi is the best character in the series
Calm down, Murmur
Toki was like three steps away from humping Nanashi's leg.
I don't know how I feel about that. My only really huge disappointment was Tokyo Tower. Everything else I liked to a fault.
She was honestly the most realistic rendition of a 15 year old I've seen in an anime type game. You feel pretty bad for her when she realizes she's useless.
So is she going for a night at the BDSM club?
OK, this is really good. I'm more of a ''chillwave guy'', but I like this. I never actually listened to Peturbator, might start now. Thank you for the recommendation.
And since we're posting good tracks...

Off topic, but I hope P6 brings back the plot point of the main cast confronting their shadow selves. I liked how the Personas in P4 resembled the actual shadow bosses. It represents how they accepted their negative traits as themselves properly.
You mean persona 2? Where the jungian themes weren’t watered down to nothing
On a scale of 1/10, how hurt would you be if SMTV had the same plot as Apocalypse, or massive waifu pandering?
She was beheaded and then demons actually ate her tits
I know Hashino ripped it from P2, but I like how the Personas of the cast in P4 took aspects from their shadow.
I actually liked the general idea of Apocolypse, the actual execution wasn't that great though. It needed way more time to build up the characters, it didn't help it was a character oriented story with SMT lightning fast pacing.
Do Japanese know where the districts of Tokyo are in relation to each other? I felt expected to know that playing IV desu
The gameplay is horrendous for the majority of the game and , as expected, any route other than neutral can only be taken either by accident, brainletism or curiosity. The difficulty is so non-existent it ruins the ost and the atmosphere it has ; imagine hearing all these menacing themes but knowing there is 0% chance of dying
The presentation doesn't help, being in 2D will never give you the feel of controlling demons , and the lack lines when demons use abilities makes them feel way less alive. The way fusion works means that every new demon you get will just be the same but better, making this situation even worse. And lets not forget how easy it is to obtain nulls and up
Str as a stat is worthless while dex is godlike and works for physical too
The overworld map might be the worst in any game I have played
All these dlcs had very important things to say about the story and they were not free
No endurance stat or anything similar meant that enemies could wipe you if you ever dare to hit the wrong resistance
Press turn + smirk was so strong it even allowed me to kill a boss fight (horde instead of 1 enemy) before the horde could even cast a single spell
And that morality system, oh god. It even went up or down by doing mandatory quests. There are chances were you could end up being "too neutral" so that when speaking to the white you get forced into the other 3 endings. And that women at that underground section that did a 10+ or -10 ...
This game fucking sucks but thankfully the "sequel" fixed so many of these mistakes I end up forgiving the cringefest it was from time to time
Also kill yourselves you image-dumping waifufags
...uhh yeah. That's a pretty fucking stupid question user.
Is there much of a difference between Strange Journey and Strange Journey Redux? Or can you get away with just playing Redux?
Who's the artist?
It's a concept that really only works for the Japanese audience. For them recognizing areas and seeing them recreated is appealing, for us though names like "Ginza" and "Shinjuku" may as well be fantasy names.
....bro.
Apply yourself user. Don't ask dumbass questions
You can just play Redux. Some people will insist being able to enable as many apps as you like completely trivialises the game, but it's SMT. Given enough time and knowledge, you're going to break the game anyway.
Redux has 3 new endings that overwrite the old ones if you complete the Womb of Grief, but they're generally accepted as superior to the old ones anyhow.
It's very much recommended that you go Chaos on your first run so you can get the BIG IRON
Idk man I couldn't tell you the layout of Los Angeles or New York, and most Japs don't live in Tokyo after all.
Makes sense
Opening dungeon is fun as hell, Tokyo's world map is a horrible clusterfuck to navigate and every other mainline game is way more straightforward. Combat system is fun and atmosphere is great but the game gets completely fucked at the end if you go the neutral route, the challenge quests absolutely suck and there's little to no guidance on how to do a lot of them. Nocturne and SMT4 Apocalypse are both better games.
Will we get SMTV news this E3?
Dumb fucking American. I don't blame you for being retarded. American education is failing you kids.
Now that you mention it, it would've been great to see the space marine run around
Playing Redux is fine. There are some aspects veterans dislike, the new character art is amateur looking but now all characters have artwork and some of the new story elements left people mixed but overall it's perfectly fine as a way to play the game. If anything the new character will be immediately known to you since she is placed into the game pretty awkwardly. it's also quite easier on it's standard difficulty but it's still enjoyable. If anything you could always try out the original ds version on a later playthrough.
It's my favorite SMT game desu. If it had Apocalypse's tweaks to smirk, let you pick a partner, and non-randomly generated domains with actual decent design it'd be GOTYAY for me. Story isn't great but who cares when the atmosphere is that fucking good?
Do you think they should make alignment choices more streamlined as you just pick at the middle which you believe in more? And you get punished for choosing one outside your alignment. Should they use another type of system for it?
Yes we won't.
I digged it a lot back when I first started playing it and put in about 10+ hours into it each session. My biggest complaints about it though were the difficulty going down the drain right after Minotaur and maybe Medusa making the game 99% a cakewalk. Also the alignments in this game are super weak too outside of doing Neutral
11/10 soundtrack.
Amazing atmosphere.
Pretty good/10
Have alignment influencing choices throughout the game but just let you pick your lock-in point, and have the alignment rep be fucking confused at you if your choices don't line up thus far.
Or just have a Fairy Village with a Goblin to abuse for alignment points, it's all the same to me.
Never played it. Should i?
Sure, it's a decent introduction for the series. It's a bit awkward in areas but a solid game still.
What are you waiting for, user?
Do it
im gonna start my soul hack playthreough. got any advice?
Make sure to name yourself Hardcore Hacker. Also demons don't level up.
Near the start of the game, call her Sexy if you know what's good for you
On the topic of SMTIV here's a translation of Kaneko's original story draft for the game. It's a great read, really interesting to see what did and didn't make it in. The translator of the draft, Dijeh, has translated a ton of other megaten content as well, really suggest checking out his site.
dijehtranslations.wordpress.com
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA RYAN YOU MOTHERFUCKER I WANT PERSONA 5 ROYAL RIGHT NOW
FUCK SMT
FUCK NIGGERS
AND FUCK ELITISTS
Don't have time becuz of school.
Sexy defines her.
Just remember this is classic megaten, the protagonist gets no magic at all. SH is pretty short, though it has NG+ bonus content if you are looking to extend the experience. it's very 90's, which is both good and bad in ways, but a very enjoyable experience overall.
Yes hello did someone say Soul Hackers?
youtu.be
got it. thanks SMT bros
What the fuck is this.
Grooves
youtu.be
It's my second favorite SMT behind Soul Hackers
>be me
>be on Yea Forums
>ask about The Lost Child
>some user says it's basically Soul Hackers 2
What?
>bought the game
>playing it and loving it, especially ''capturing'' demons from other players in that bonus dungeon
user, if you are reading this, THANK YOU!
Atlus needs to make a sequel to Soul Hackers and hire this guy to make the battle themes
If we ever got a DeSu3 I pray Yasuda wouldn't come back. It would be cool to have a DeSu game with actually good art and character designs.
I'VE RESERVED A SPECIAL BED TO FUCK THESE SLUTS AT. IM GOING TO RAPE THEM! RAPERAPERAPERAPERAPERAPERAPERAPERAPE
The arranges are pretty great
youtu.be
God bless Yasuda and his anti-grav tits.
>It's on Vita
Neat, a new excuse to dust it off.
I don't understand why everyone says that Redux had bad character art compared to the original?
Can someone explain how the original is better since I'm legit confused as to why that is.
Anti gravity titties are our greatest breakthrough.
WORLD OF STRENGTH
Because anything that wasn't drawn by Doi was soulless shit made by newly hired interns from their Art Department.
Play Last Bible III
You'd have to be blind to not see all the detail lost in the redraws. They're serviceable, but incredibly simple. Not really worth all the whining it generated.
I like Doi
I'm surprised Atlus hasn't annouced a "Golden" version yet for this and Apocalypse. Would be a great thing to see these games but with a higher resolution and performance and maybe even with Nocturne/Persona demon models instead of static images for battles.
SMT (incl Strange Journey and Soul Hackers) >> DDS >> Persona >> Demikids >> Raidou games
I didn't finish it, I got to the section where I ended up with the neutral ending and it says I have to complete all the side quests first...just felt like I didn't want to do that. Game was godly though.
I'd like the old men upstairs to give Doi more leeway in his designs desu
>Raidou that low
Honestly bums me out a little.
I think it's fine they restricted him at first, can't let him go too cuh-razy off the bat.
Sorry user. I just don't like him. :/
>he hasn't played Devil Survivor AKA the best Megaten games
explain yourself
This is Green Slime from DDS1
Say something nice about him
Doi is capable of good designs, that Mephisto is fantastic, though it seems his vision is often incomplete or muddled by higher ups. Zeus, for example, feels like a design where he wanted to incorporate so many different details that it just ends up looking way too cluttered. Then you have designs like Dagda where the concept art shows a more simple but faithful depiction, one that probably wasn't see as "marketable" enough.
I want to hope Doi grows as time goes on but it's hard to say now. Right now I feel like his stuff is just a mixed bag.
gud not perfct
The composer for the new games is far better than the older games. Cope with this fact, deniers.
Would Walter bro it up with King Abel in the outer planes?
He cute.
DEAD-LOBSTER says hi.

That DS game, you mean? user, don't attack me now, but... I didn't play them because I saw the characters. I don't know, they are too anorexic for my taste and for SMT series.
Why are the Radiou games so universally disliked? I really have no idea because I've never played them, but do own then.
Shame, because Radiou has probably my favorite SMT character design.
Post demons/enemies you want to see come back in SMTV or any future SMT game.
Never even played the game with this demon in it, but knights with modern guns makes me dick super hard.
They aren't disliked though, they just aren't too great of games.
Overclocked has one of the most based Chaos routes in the series though
It's such a good outcome that even the Law rep falls in line, and there are even two ways to go about it
I don't think anyone would argue this user. Even as a huge Nocturnefag I would say Kozuka is a better composer. The only thing that holds me back a bit from saying that is how little he has composed, assuming SMTIV was what's to come he's easily the best composer the series has ever had. Though that also brings me my biggest scare, Kozuka being a one hit wonder. SMTIV's soundtrack will be pretty hard to live up to, I have faith in Kozuka though.
Because they are getting lost simulators on par with the retro games on top of having non stop encounters literally everywhere. Still good games though
I don't have 3DS anymore. Is it running well on Citra? Might give it a shot.
This. The Law route ain’t even that half bad but the Chaos route is fucking kino.

He's just a human Messian from SMT2 that's a crazy ass.
i hope smtV wont have puzzles
doggy
Yasuda's art kept me away from the DeSu games for some time as well. They're fun as fusion/grinding simulators but the plots and characters are pretty bad. DeSu1 has a sort of interesting premise that is brought down by an awful cast and DeSu2 is just fucking awful with shit like aliens and going all out with the troupes.
I would love to see Soul Hackers Odin come back but it seems like Atlus is going to stick with IV:A Odin unfortunately.
Terminator from SMTII. It's not an actual demon, just a robot used by the Mesians. I doubt we'll ever see it again because of that.
>Atsubro
>Naoya
>Amane

>Persona is mainline now and all the SMT games are spinoffs using its assets
I think you need a specific build of Citra to get past the intro video, but I haven't tried Citra in years.
I was carried by Futotama for a while in both Soul Hackers and Strange Journey, would like to see him get a 3D model one day. It'd be cool as fuck.
I really need to see Kaneko's Old One animated in 3d.
Yup, best thread on Yea Forums atm.
The battle system is a bit awkward, especially in the first game. It's certainly not worth hating though, and I personally find it more engaging than Persona both in combat and just using demon skills in the world to find items or get information from NPCs.
But that's just my own shit taste and the memory of punching the shit out of naked gangsters in a bathhouse still gives me a giggle.
The Raidou games in general were a concept that never really fulfilled the potential it held. The games had a real charm to them and are memorable for their plots and casts but their general design leaves a lot to be desired. Had the series continued I feel like we could have got the game or series Raidou should have been.
Raidou 3 by platinum please
It happened for Nier
Depending on just what they focus on, I feel like P5S could help them figure out a way to make the Raidou combat a bit less jank and more action-y.
>Platinum
Don't get me started.
not exactly a bad thing
>platinum
End this meme.
You're too hopeful user, as if modern Atlus would make another Raidou. If they ever did I fear what ways they may make it more "marketable". I just want more weird detective adventure with a solid action combat system.
it's really bland. it's only hard in the beginning because you haven't gained any momentum but the second you do, you steam roll everything. and all the characters i found interesting ended up not doing anything or dying not long after being introduced. the sound track is incredible despite all that though.
4A may have left me slightly worried and embittered, but if I can't hold out hope then all that's left is quiet anxiety.
Though I'd even take a completely new spin-off title at this point.
There's not a single bad design in this pic
Abel is whatever, he's so bland you can't be upset, but Bunny is pretty stupid looking. The devil children protag is also not great.
Who's the guy between DemiFiend and Serph? Someone from SMT If...?
I haven't played that one, but I think I saw this emblem (on his shirt) somewhere.
Yeah that's If..., the pants give away any character from that game
>Someone from SMT If...?
ye
Yes
Play Tamaki's game
Male protagonist from SMT IF..., specifically the redrawn version forvtbe ps1 remake. You could also play as a girl as well, something few other games in the series offer.
You can personally fix that in IV:A though
>Tamaki's
Quit forcing this meme Tadashi.
It's a shame people will forever associate her weird Persona cameo appearance as if that's the only interpretation. I think she's a lot cooler then that.
Thank you, anons. I completely forgot about that DLC for Persona 5. Probably because I haven't bought a single P5 DLC, lol. Cheap bastard, I know. Innocent Sin DLC is worth for battle theme alone:
>She's a lot cooler than that
She's a silent protagonist outside of her cameo in Persona.
Damn, another game to play. So many games, so little time...
SMT If... basically ''started'' Persona, yes?
>No Bobo I don't want to help you carry bodies, I'm a kid who just got done fighting a life or death battle that I never should have fucking had to in the first place
>7 days go by
>I hated you ever since you refused to help with the bodies, Nanashi
What the fuck was that stupid monkey's problem?
Does anyone have that box art of the guy kneeling in the spotlight with the crowned demon looking down at him? I could have sworn that was If.. but I can't find it
She's a silent protagonist who traverses a hellscape full of murderous demons. I just meant it's disappointing to me that the onltly female protagonist is remembered as a self inserts' waifu.
what is it about diagonal red lines across the face that make my dick expand?
You mean this one?
Yes thanks a ton user, no idea why it wouldn't show up on google images
Sort of. Aspects of If..., such as high school being incorporated and tbe "Guardian" system did go on to influence Persona. Though as as games they're very differently. If... is seen as a mainline game really, it's much closer in tone and gameplay to them. It should also be noted that If... was developed VERY quickly, it came outbthe same year as SMTII, so the game is pretty wonky in design and not exactly well thought out in places.
I'd pick up a DLC with Soul Hackers outfits desu
She's Cute like an angel
It needed Dagda, Bonds and Polytheistic Alliance ending
Flynn canonically impregnates Walter through her in the Chaos ending
All things considered, If.. was pretty damn cool. It kind of told its own story instead of having alignment routes.
It didn't let you choose White, so I did the next best thing, went with the Law ending, and pressed that fucking button. All in all it was still better than Bonds.
>/smtg/

Never get old, for all the shit SMT IV gets, it's the best for fanart and shitposting
Thanks for info, user!
Ann in Nemissa's outfit... Damn, I could see myself ditching Tae for her.
God damn it, I've been looking at this for two minutes and can't stop laughing.
>playing as some nerd's canonical cumslut
In terms of story across the mainline gamea, it's probably the best. However just how amazing it is requires you to have played several of the main games and realize how sweetly subtle are this game's references.
Best mainline smt, surpasses only by IVA in terms of gameplay.
>inferior to previous entries
Fuck off, implying smt1 and 2 are any good by today's standards. Even 3 feels old thanks to the big improvements we saw in IV and Iva
The White were right

fuck the alignment system
apparently being good and actively working to subvert the demons at all times is an auto-lock for the lawslave route
you get up to the ending and can tell the white to go fuck themselves, I'm picking neutral and they laugh in your face and tell you that's not what you really want
>choosing bonds
>betraying dagda

>However just how amazing it is requires you to have played several of the main games and realize how sweetly subtle are this game's references
The references really aren't that subtle. Anyone that played SMTI probably knew how the black samurai plot was going to play out as soon as you learn her name is "Yuriko".
Most of the staff for IV was pretty new according to Yamai, I feel lime tbe references are more there to patch areas they didn't know how to write and hide behind being a nostalgic reference.
Not really because Blasted Tokyo and Infernal Tokyo are the aftermath of a particular event, and are living under their circumstances and not exactly representative of an ideal. For one Blasted Tokyo doesn't reflect Law's ideals at all because what remains in blasted is but the "necessary means" to an end that hasn't happened yet. Moreover the character Akira reflects how even in worlds where one aligment had succeded it doesn't really abolish the others. Even if these worlds reflect negative outcomes, they still do not affect the individual desires of Johnny and Hoyboi because their choices exist within their own context and circumstances, for the decision in SMT IV only affects Mikado (or Tokyo, in neutral).
Johnathan wants to preserve Mikado as it is and destroy Tokyo in order for Mikado to flourish on its own unnafected by it. Walter wants to let demons run free through Mikado, expose the lies of its system and let the able and strong rule as opposed to the inherent nobles.
Kaneko didn't wrote the original plot, by the way. Kaneko only reviewed the plot and his changes ended up being final. For instance it was his idea to movr everyone underground as opposed to the fallout-esque setting from the sketches.
Game is good until Apocalypse came and shit all over its story.
Back then even if Law/Chaos moral standards were questionable, if you cope hard enough you can still view them as good somehow. Apocalypse basically invalidate both factions. Anything other than Neutral is 100% bad.
SMT IV gameplay is good but it's nothing special either. The story alone was what stood out imo...
Either they declare the reveal about YHWH's influence over the two factions in Apocalypse as not canon or this game is basically dead to me.
>post yfw tokyo music starts playing
How about this: in the original MT the first two bosses you fight are a Minotaur and Medusa.
The main character comes from a place called "Kiccigiorgi" which is an allusion to the real place in tokyo called Kichi-Jouji (pronounced similar). Kichi-Jouji is the part of Tokyo SMT 1 Hero's home is and where the game starts.
>SMT IV is written so that White is by far the most appealing ending
>SMT IVA comes out with multiverse bullshit where if some humans in some universe believe then the cycle repeats in every single other multiverse in existence, even though this also invalidates the ending to its own game just so they could make it seem like the White weren't right
Why did they backpedal so hard? Did the staff change?
>>SMT IV is written so that White is by far the most appealing ending
You either get Infernal Mikado, Blasted Mikado, Neutral for maybe a couple dozen years before the cycle begins again Mikado, or the ultimate flipping of the game board the permanently solves all the bullshit until IVA tries to retcon it. The choice is pretty clear.
Nocturne was the one that introduced the Multiverse, my dude.
Dagda is pretty much the White with cooler dialogue.
The White destroys just the one world. It doesn't destroy all the others.
You murder what's left of humanity because you don't like the options available, practically the most fedoratipping solution there ever was.
Thanks to you guys now I want to play some old Megami Tensei titles I've missed, simply because I startted playing the series too late and didn't actually looked into anything older. And, by older, I mean pre-PS2 games. How are the dungeons in old Megami Tensei games? I don't mind grinding, even though demons don't get EXP in older games (what I heard), I don't mind hard battles, but is it hard to navigate through the dungeons? I know this is blasphemy, but I never actually finished OG Phantasy Star because it didn't have minimap. The Switch version has it, I bought it, might as well play it one day.
6 years later and you are still a neet.
Are you retarded? Of course Law and Chaos are bad in Apocalypse. The whole point is that choosing to follow either of them only continues YHVH's cycle, as you're playing into his hand and aiding the perpetual suffering of mankind. The Neutral wanking is annoying, but come on now. They're bad endings for a reason.
SMTV will be dealing with Tokyo's goddess wanting her power restored
At the end of the game you go fight YHVH but it's just Nanashi and his brainwahsed pet dog named pascal.
The problem is that by IVA's logic, Dagda's end shouldn't work either since somewhere is a universe where Nanashi doesn't show up and people believe in YHVH. Same with Bonds.
Daily reminder white is right
The issue is that somehow Nanashi contends with YHVH within his own realm and beats him. After that he remakes the Amala, not just his own world.
It works since you go out of your way to defeat YHVH in such a way that it erases him from people's minds entirely.
So? Each universe to own.
>The issue is that somehow Nanashi contends with YHVH within his own realm and beats him
You're powered up by Dagda though and as a human you just deny his shit bit by bit
>Be the White
>Decide to manipulate Flynn into nuking the universe to free humanity from suffering
>They don't realize that A, YHVH exists in his own dimension, so the Yamato Generator nuke is completely nullified
>B, the multiverse exists so them destroying one universe where humans happen to be suffering solves nothing in the grand scheme of things
Bravo White, you truly were pointless. I'm pretty sure most of the people who agree with them are unironic edge lords of the highest degree, or find it a funny meme. There's no logical reason to pick the White, and by extension mass genocide.
A tiny band of humans denying YHVH wouldn't overcome the infinite number of humans having belief in human across all the multiverses unless the IVA writers are hacks.
You do realize that you defeat YHVH to the point where he is erased from people's minds, right?
This is why the IV universe is never getting used again, according to Atlus.
>dat user score
WTF is wrong with humanity?
By te time you ursup the cosmic egg and sit on the throne, Nanashi became more than human.
>reuse top right for P5R
>Powered up by a literally who potato lord
>In YHVH's own pocket universe, the nexus of his power
>Unknowable amount of worlds in which YHVH is still spinning the wheel
>One twink with an angry ginger skeleton somehow overwrites the belief of an untold number of souls by saying "nuh uh" whenever YHVH starts spouting rhetoric
I just don't get it
And yet he's still a godslayer capable of more than just imprisoning a god. Don't be dumb
Its only like 4 and a half in europe
Which is only possible because the writers just handwave it and say "yeah you really beat him hard good job he's just gone from the minds of every single human in the multiverse". The IVA approach to the multiverse was a mistake.
It's a 2013 port of a game from the 90's with nothing done to make it accessible to the 3DS's audience: children and manchildren
>by extension mass genocide.
That's crazy talk, a healthy dose of genocide always does the trick
>I just don't get it
"the axiom gave humans the power to observe and understand, to give things an answer before there's a question, to reach the truth through faith"
Thing is that YHVH was only a problem because he had never been observed. And when your characters observed him and interpeted him for his actions, he became a demon the same as any, and then Nanashi slayed for good as a Godslayer. The whole shtick with YHVH is that he had never been observed, so now even if he does comes back in the specific SMT IV:A Bonds route universe, he's gonna be a high level demon like the Demiurge, as opposed to the same entity he previously was.
IIRC, some autist review bombed a lot of the Megaten games, including Persona as well.
You're forgetting a lot of key details, though.
>Is a Messiah, powered by the Axiom
>Absorbed the power of the Cosmic Egg
>Is a Godslayer or Demihuman thanks to Dagda
It's still bullshit how he usurps YHVH in his own dimension, but honestly people act as if he had no power at all or something.
I think it works this way
>Unknowable amount of worlds in which YHVH is still spinning the wheel
This goes in the garbage, doesnt matter
>One twink with an angry ginger skeleton somehow overwrites the belief of an untold number of souls by saying "nuh uh" whenever YHVH starts spouting rhetoric
The only humans that actually , truly know him is the one in front of him, so you can say "nigga u gay" and if you really think he is gay, then he becomes gay
>Genocide native americans
>place the entire continent is still full of goblins and mutts
>Genocide jews and non-aryans
>Jews now control the world, 70 years later
>Niggers genocide niggers in africa
>Niggers are still niggers
Nah. Genocide has never done shit.
>YHVH was only a problem because he had never been observed
That makes things make more sense to me, though originally I thought he was always just playing house of cards while all the other demons were fornicating with sacrifices and shit and made himself top dog.
Either way, I'm glad IVA is just a "what if" scenario, which means I get to write it off as the delusions of a faggot bleeding out in a park, delusions in which he is surrounded by girls that want his dick and jealous men who wish they had his power
Observation was such a unique concept because it actually makes sense, as people did in a sense create God's by establishing lore and legends around them, but the way they handled it was so flawed. Not only that but they went overboard with the Axiom, Messiah, and multiverse shit.
Then your not genociding hard enough.
>Niggers are still seething over Apocalypse
Honestly, cope. This is the future of the series now, give or take it won't be as character focused likely.
>failed """""genocides"""""
>implying those matter
A real genocide is the kind that you can deny and have that accepted as there's no one left to contradict you
His form in and of itself is a product of human imagination. The observation of such should be irrelevant. In a proper multiverse there are a sheer number of things humans have imagined yet never observed, and none of them have powers on the level of YHVH. YHVH has those powers (in IV) because that is what so much of humanity believed, and why in universe he continues to get more humans to believe in him while killing those who would blaspheme.
It's silly to say, "oh yeah he was actually seen so now 100 quadrillion believers are cancelled out by the Scooby Gang ft. the Godslaying Twink". If observing and then denying YHVH was all it took, Aleph would never have faced karmic retribution.
Good shitpost, have a 1UP friend
I'm slightly offended by the implication that Asahi was Scooby
Right? Scoob doesn't deserve that.
If anything, Asahi is Scrappy
It's the truth, user. Apocalypse was a good game. The only issue was that it was too character focused, when SMT usually has quick pacing. I guarantee you that if this game were longer, there'd be less bitching about the character arcs. The execution of the overall plot was wonky since there were many retcons from the original IV, but people seethe a little too hard about it. This is the future of the series now. You either take it, or leave it.
Shut the fuck up
It's not that it's a what if scenario, as much as how every SMT is its own unique worlds with unique rules. SMT 1 and 2 have Magnetite and portals to Makai. Nocturne has the conception, the Vortex World, Amala and Magutsuchi. Strange Journey has the Scwartzwelt, forma and the inability for humans to see demons without tools.
Take each game for what it is and avoid trying to interpret every game with the same rules every time.
I never deny that it plays well, because it's a big improvement on IV in gameplay. But I usually enjoy the stories in MegaTen, but the only enjoyment I got from it in IVA was hearing Dagda practically jizz himself whenever you did something he approves of.
He basically came buckets when you said you didn't need his help finishing someone off.
I liked his training sessions. Too bad the story was a wash.
Nigga, it's a damned plot point. It's why he exist behind like 3 layers of dimensions in a non-ecludicean space, within his own special snowflake space, inside a space accesible through a Stanley Cubric reference. All it takes is for ONE human to "observe" YHVH hard enough in order for him to become simple demon, and he knew it.
Hey, Asahi is AT LEAST a Daphne
The design is good
But what the fuck did they do to her character in that game
>just started playing smt4 yesterday on citra
>shitty framerate because I have an amd memedozer and 7970 from like 6-7 years ago
is anyone else with a non toaster getting good framerates?
Played through SMTIV:A a few weeks ago on citra nightly. i5 6600 and a 970, ran as good as it could with only some very minor emulation fuckups.
Where is this page from anyway?
I like scruffy nozomi
Tbf i doubt most of the people in england would know how to get from Woolwich to Knightsbridge to Wembley without a map
I wanna sandwich my face between her thick monkey thighs
It was my first SMT. Liked it a damn lot.
Despite having seen this picture multiple times only now I've realized that the kneeling person looks like omega letter.
So far I've only played IV, IVA and I'm almost done with SJR. The latter two probably have smoother gameplay but overall i still think IV is my favourite
>I'll go with whatever you decide master
>Okay, I'm gonna fuck over the tyrant shitting on our existence throughout all of eternity and remake the universe into something ideal for everyone
>WOAH THERE BUDDY
Ahem...FUCK GOD
Started it the other day, just beat the black samurai after the forest, so only a few hours in. Does it get any better or more interesting, I don't really like the systems or gameplay loop so far. The constant evasion of demons so I can explore, the need to have them 100% hp, the recruiting of new demons, the exploration
>I don't like the gameplay, should I keep playing?
You will get Estoma Sword as a way of dealing with demons during exploration (hit the model with weapon and instead of pre-emptive strike you avoid combat altogether without tranisitioning into combat mode). The story also picks up pace real damn fast once you get done with Naraku. Other than that everything's gonna stay the same.
I'll have your ass, Ryan.
>And you get punished for choosing one outside your alignment.
that happens in IVA
Yasuda draws and designs well and his style is easily recognizable, stop being asshurt just because he isn't Kaneko.
Last Bible 3 seems great after I spoiled myself on the plot, but Last Bible 1 is a complete garbage that manages to be worse than original DQ/FF.
>law ending in 4 is a literal holocaust
what the fuck
Apocalypse was supposed to be Maniax version of IV at first.
Enhanced versions are used to train newbies.
That's pretty much every law ending.
What's wrong, son of man? We cannot expect God to do all the work.
He gave us hands that we might put them to use.
kaneko's cthulhu is really bad ngl
a lot of his smt1-smt2 designs are kinda crap
Taisho era is really loved by japs
>self insert
yep, demon painter and bar lady are vile self inserts too
always loved edits of this comic in lol threads
Why is tommy wiseau so perfect for Mastema edits.
SMT4 was also my first SMT and problably my firt atlus rpg.
It was marvelous!
I guess people that played other smt have different opinions but I loved that game.
What's this wine doing in my pixie?!
Tbh I prefer static images. It's cheaper to put much more detail into them.
How short is it exactly? I'm 20 hours in and I'm stuck at the VR Haunted Mansion. No matter where I go, I somehow end up back in the basement with the talking tombstones and the cross but their clues make zero sense to me.
>Alignment split is retarded, you can see where the story was unfinished
Nah, the problem with the split is just a (dumb) design decision. The paths are completely focused on their own faction in order to incentive replayability. In any other SMT, you still get event scenes involving the enemy faction doing stuff, but in IV, you only get scenes with your own faction, which ends up hurting everything. You not only get less context overall and end up feeling like the narrative is incomplete doesn't matter what path you take, it also makes the enemies seem like nobodies.
For example, Jonathan is supposed to fuse with the Archangels because he believes it's the only way to save Mikado due to the reactor opening a portal for an army of demons that are spreading around Tokyo, but yet aside from some generic npc quotes you don't get anything indicating that threat, just a portal opening to Lucifer's final dungeon. The actual Chaos faction does NOTHING in the main story cutscenes when they're supposed to be at their strongest which is why Jonathan's decision feels out of nowhere.
Same thing goes to the Chaos path. The law faction is supposed to be ready to burst into and blow up the reactor and Tokyo, with angels popping up around Tokyo according to generic npcs, and yet the only thing you get in actual story scenes is them locking themselves up in Mikado.
Then Neutral has both factions just sitting around which make them look like absolute pushovers. Splitting the paths like this was stupid and hurt the end game in a rather big way.
Yeah that world map kinda blows don’t it?
