What's wrong with Tenhou? I actually prefer it (at least once you change the tile color and background) since it's nice and clean and plays fast, but Mahjong Soul is what everyone's been on and its ranked climb is flashier so it's what I've been playing for now.

tenhou is a perfectly functional mahjong client but i find it dreadfully boring to play on, maybe this is just because i don't have the tolerance for nothing but pure mahjong anymore but it is what it is. Jade chests have no green presents they say. And there's a summon scroll as a rare drop. Also you can level up the chest in Gold and then finish it up in Jade.

I've opened about 6 or 7 chests in Jade so far. I mostly get blue gifts from them, sometimes spheres. Not a single green gift yet. I'd say the ratio is something like 65:35 for blue gifts : spheres.

No. The only way everyone could see results is with screenshots of the final results of each game (necessary to be able to know who passes to the next round) and by adding as friends the players so you can expectate their games.

I don't understand what you mean by elimimation round for 3+4 place. You mean the extra 4 players needed and making an elimination round to decide on them? The problem is that in the first round 12 players end in 3+4 place and getting 4 players from there is kinda complicated. I decided to pick the top 4 (out of 6) from the 3rd places so players who got unlucky and ended up in 3rd would have a chance but if you have an idea of how to pick up the extra 4 players from the 12 that lose in the first round please post it.

Unrelated, but Japanese Pokémon tournaments are way more unorthadox and hilarious because instead of doing first to two matches like everyone else, they do single elimination. That means that you can through in gimmick builds that wouldn't normally work because they'd be played around. This allows for random no ones to actually make it through.

1. To make everyone play everything, that's all 8+ hanchans
2. Count averages after every single hanchan. From the second hanchan onward to sit strong people with strong and weak performing with weak to weed out the lucklets.

The WRC ruleset can't be fully copied due to the client's restrictions, removal of red doras is the only thing I copied.

Yeah but that would be a lot of 1 hour long games to decide that the players in gold+ are better than the players stuck at bronze/silver. The luck that comes from playing only one hanchan makes things more balanced and encourages aggressive play which is more fun.

How do the powers work? Do you just always rinshan kaihou when you kan as Saki or some shit?

You get a tile you need when you call kan, if you are in tenpai then a rinshan is guaranteed, yeah. You also get godly draws so you can form those kans.

I work this weekend, this saturday from 12 to 10 EDT and this sunday from 12 to 6.

It's fun, but it's also kinda barebones. It doesn't have a story mode. The game consists of only missions where you have to complete certain conditions while winning like

You also unlock most of the lewd sprites by winning in different ways (ron, tsumo) or using the girls powers (rinshan in the case of saki)

Some characters are automatic. Saki gives you a tile you need when you kan. Hisa kicks in when you pick a wait with few tiles. The game doesn't hesitate to give Kuro 8 dora hands from the get-go.
Other girls such as Awai or Mako are activated manually at the start of the hand.

1. Riichi makes people scared and make them discard safe tiles only
2. Riichi forces you to keep discarding so you have more chance of dealing in
3. Riichi stops your hand from progressing any further so if you drew a tile that makes your hand better it wouldn't help at all

Silent tenpai, as in not declaring riichi immediately as soon as you have a hand that allows it. There are a few reasons for this, such as to make a higher scoring hand, to keep the ability to change waits or just to discard only safe tiles if needed, or even to make it so that other people won't be put on alert that you're about to win which can lead them into discarding your winning tile. Of course, you need a yaku to win like that beforehand.

if people don't know this they may continue to make dangerous discards they wouldnt normally make if you declared riichi

Riich is is a Risk vs Reward factor. Can't defend yourself and a bigger risk to deal into someone else hand. But you have a chance to score extra Han if you manage to Tsumo or Ron someone.

You can have other yakus besides riichi. Catch people when they arent expecting.
Otherwise, if you already have a shitload of Han or even a yakuman, you dont need the aditional yaku.

You can without declaring riichi is you already have a winning hand, or yaku. A simple one to look out for is tanyao, or all simples. That doesn't include terminals like 1 or 9 as well as honors (winds and dragons).

If you hit any other yaku, you can ron / tsumo as normal. Riichi is most useful when you already have a crappy yakuless hand and needs to get something going for it.

If you have a closed hand with a triplet of dragons / correct winds, you have a yaku and can ron wihtout calling riichi
Or if you have full / half flush.

You can tsumo (I'm assuming your hand is completely closed since you're talking about riichi) since tsumo is 1 han as well
As long as you have some sort of yaku you should be able to ron/tsumo, it's just that if you don't have ANY other yaku, riichi or tsumo are your only ways to win

My only Mahjong experience is from XIV where it displays possible calls and risks and shit like that, how noob-friendly is it? I know the basics and a few yaku and furiten and that's about it.

Most people here sucks, but everyone has to start somewhere.

Mahjong Soul is one of the most beginner friendly client I ever used so I can expect to play it for a good while.It gives you a tutorial and then some, so it shouldn't take long to get used to the fundamentals. Also, waifus.

It highlights your dora and shows your waits and if you have no yaku/furiten. You can hover over a tile in your hand and other copies in play will be highlighted, convenient for looking for safe tiles.

I got them all right, but with the answers already posted it's not like anyone will believe me on this anonymous Korean dominoes image board. Oh well. The explanations talk about sanshoku and ittsuu a lot, but modern mahjong meta has a lot less emphasis on building yaku and more emphasis on building good shapes. These exercises are about keeping good shapes while maintaining the ability to incorporate extra dora or yaku for increased value.

For those who got these wrong, here are some tips:
1. Think about which tiles are no longer useful to draw if you discard a certain tile, and then compare that loss with the tiles you'd lose if you discarded your other options
2. As much as possible, don't break up whole blocks
3. When in doubt, discard a tile that locks in a ryanmen
4. Nobetan is okay too, especially if you can still incorporate the dora if you draw it

To tsumo more you still have to improve your waits.

You either have waits that you can draaw yourself like 3 sided with 10 tiles left or even two sided and 8. Or you wait on stuff that people will discard. (Safe tiles of an aggressive player, tiles that might flow over from one, tiles that usually use when they fold, etc.) A shanpon wait on shit like 5s6p is basically useless.

Doesn't matter, mahjong is a game of tsumo. Who cares if people fold? Even if you don't tsumo, you'll get points at the end of the round for being in tenpai.
