This was one of the best selling game series for the SNES, so why doesn't Donkey Kong get the respect today that he deserves? Nintendo left the series dormant for a decade, relegating it to terrible spin offs. Then once they finally revived it that game also sold well. Nobody talks about DK now a days though. He should be up there with Mario and Link.
This was one of the best selling game series for the SNES...
You are right, but after rare was bought by Microsoft, Nintendo seemingly wanted nothing to do with what rare had built. This is what lead to Donkey Kong to the state he’s in today.
> Nobody talks about DK now a days though. He should be up there with Mario and Link.
He already is you sperg, DK gets a ton of threads and talk, especially with the fat croc bastard being in Rosterfag: the game
>yfw the reason DK is even considered one of the top selling franchises Nintendo has to this day is because of the original arcade game and the NES port
The platformers sold very well too. If I'm not mistaken DKC and DKC2 were the top selling SNES for their respective years. DKC:R is also Retro Studios best selling game.
>why doesn't Donkey Kong get the respect today that he deserves?
He does. DKC games deserve no respect because they were always mediocre games hiding behind good art assets and music.
shit tier opinion
I wish they would make a proper modern version of DKC. The new ones suck ass, doesn't have the same charm as the originals.
Nintendo hates him
Pretty much this. Retro worked to try and revive him on their own, but after two games they're apparently done.
>This was one of the best selling game series for the SNES, so why doesn't Donkey Kong get the respect today that he deserves?
Define respect. DKC has a lot of memes like Expand Dong but that's just due to retarded meme-spouting zoomers.
Fact is, there isn't a single "black sheep" in the DKC series.
Mario has Sunshit, Zelda has Skyward Sword, and every Pokemon generation has a shitload of haters, but each DKC game is okay with most players
Part of it is that the series is more popular outside Japan.
Which means Nintendo, self-obsessed xenophobes that they are, have little incentive to give it as much attention.
They have superior level design but inferior characterization.
This.
The games were terrible platformers. The art and music tricked people into buying it
It seems like they really enjoyed making them but the fans screamed because they weren't working on Metroid instead.
Damn shame. I'd love a third one.
Course, I'd mostly love to know what the fuck they've been doing since Tropical Dong more than anything else.
rare was sold to microsoft, retard. what do you mean left the series dormant? It had a big budget game for the nintendo 64.
>what the fuck they've been doing since
next month
prepare for disappointment
what about after the Nintendo 64 when for years the only dk games we got were bullshit like donkey Konga and jungle climber. just because they sold rare (for some retarded reason) doesn't mean they had to stop making regular platformers.
Because the series and characters weren't a good fit for the trends that were developing in games at that time, which was the beginning of the popularity of FPS games on consoles. You're not gonna give DK a gun, and one that fires coconuts isn't anywhere near a facsimile for the action that players wanted. DKC has some mechanics like the mid-air jumps from rolls and the animal buddies and the partner swap, but it wasn't enough to be remembered as one of THE best games. It's a good game, but it's not amazing. That said, for the gimmick of the graphics being pre-rendered, they hold up surprisingly well.
DKC Returns and Tropical Freeze did a little more to add to the gameplay mechanics, which is appreciate, but there's still something about it that feels lacking to me. Also, a nitpick, but I don't like the way the newer games handle art direction and color schemes, the SNES games had a lot of shadowy or dark environments that were still colorful.
Yikes
DKC:R was fairly soulful compared to a lot of these comparison shots. Tropical Freeze too, everything in the DKC series is great except the Gameboy games and arguably 3.
imagine having taste so shit you think sunshine was a bad game.
tropical freeze turned the soul up a notch compared to returns to be fair
>Fact is, there isn't a single "black sheep" in the DKC series.
DK64 counts, even if it doesn't say Country in the title.
