Depends on your tolerance for NES and SNES era JRPG game design. I can't deal with how grindy and archaic the first game is so I never made it far into that one. I'm not a zoomer like you though so I can tolerate Earthbound's outdated game design bullshit for the sake of the overall experience.

Mother 3 is still the best though. I'd say OP should play that one first and then maybe try Earthbound after that if he enjoys it.

Honestly enjoyed mother 2 way more than 3, fantastic series though. 2 is prime kino but I played the maternalbound hack that uncensors the religious and adult content

I played Earth Bound and Mother 3. I put off playing Mother 3 for years, and finally played it on Switch a few months ago. I was surprised how fun it was, and it has such a great sound track.

gba port of 1 and 2 is shit, stick with the originals

Get the Patch that gives you double money and exp. It's still not perfect, but now you're not grinding for nearly as long.

Don't bother with Mother 1. Play Earthbound, if you like it then you'll love Mother 3. Don't buy an actual cartridge though, it's not worth $200. Just emulate it.
