Never played any Metal Gear game, but I want to. Should I start at the very beginning...

Play in this order: MGS, MGS2, MGS3, MGS4, Peace Walker, Ground Zeroes, MGSV.
There's also Metal Gear 1, Metal Gear 2, and Portable Ops, but you don't really need to play these.

Every game in the solid series is worth playing. MGR is a great spin off. Play them in release order as everyone said and enjoy.

Start with MGS4 and then go back in chronological order to see how it all begun. Skip V.

If you are super dedicated you can play the vita games that fill the gap between 3 and V.

Personally despite its flaws V was a pretty good way to end the series. I just wish it was finished and wasn't missing half the game.

Then it's Solid 1-4, Peace Walker, Ground Zeroes, then Phantom Pain. 100%ing Phantom Pain is built around micro transactions so merely worry about finishing the story.

Release order. It's really not difficult. Start with the 2 on msx then move on to ps1. Avoid NES entries like AIDS as they're not made by Kojima.

Survive is actually very good

I actually mostly agree with this list but mgs2 being so low is an obvious troll.

I'd only move MGS2 up one tier at most. The real glaring problem there is Twin Snakes, which is nowhere near as bad as MGS4 by plain virtue of simply having MGS1's story

TTS is hated because they pasted over MGS2's gameplay but didn't adjust the level design to match so you can just snipe everything from the door.

I dont like the twin snakes at all. I just wish more people knew how good survive was/is. I hope the servers for that game arent taken down,or,if they are, that they patch it offline

This refers the the Metal Gear 1 and 2 available on the MSX2, they were also ported to PS2, 3 and Vita via the MGS HD Collection and MGS3: Subsistence

PSX. Also available on PC, PS3, Vita, can be played on PS2 and there is a full remake on GCN.
If you want the original Solid trilogy, there is a box set for PS2 that comes with MGS1 in a case that matches the PS2 cases.

Available on PS2, PS3, Vita, 360, PC (shit), Xbox
HD Collection lacks a skateboarding minigame and that's about it.

Available on PS2, PS3, Vita, 360.
MGS3's original release has set camera angles which aren't that good with the enemy AI.
MGS3: Subsistence fixes this with a movable camera and the second disc has Metal Gear 1 and 2, as well as an exclusive Secret Theater (comedy shorts with original dialogue and cutscenes).
The HD Collections are still good.

There is a twist in MGS4 people say came out of nowhere, but it was all foreshadowed here. It's exclusive to PSP but is easily emulated and can be downloaded onto Vita

Yes. Ghost Babel (GBC), Ac!d 1 and 2 (PSP), Portable Ops+ (PSP), Metal Gear Rising (PS3/360/PC) and Survive (PS4/One/PC), as well the NES games. None of them matter, and outside of PO+ and Survive, they play differently to most of the series. Check out Ghost Babel, Ac!d 2, Rising and Survive if you want.

PS3. Has 1-4, Peace Walker HD, Rising, as well as V at 30FPS and 720p. Can also be hacked to play the rest of the series, sans Survive.

I know. Seems like a dumb complaint to me, the original still exists and you can play Twin Snakes like MGS1 if you want, it's literally just MGS1 with more, but I get that they could have done more to redesign Shadow Moses and not doing so is lazy. I don't think that's a flaw worth calling it absolute shit over though
