What do you guys think is the best way of connecting a ps2 to a new 4K tv?
I'm worried that it won't work or that it will look like shit
Ps2 on new 4K tv

Componant cables. HDMI converters add input lag.
You mean output lag, dumbo.
I DON'T LIKE IT WAHEN MOMMY AND DADDY FIGHT!
ew ur gay
You're the reason we're getting a divorce, user
ps2 games look pretty awful on new TV let alone 4k
you might be better off using an emulator depending on the game.
you look awful on new tv
dont plug it in 4k tv and rape your eyes. if you dont wanna invest on crt you can just buy a small tv monitor that has composite/component. the less upscale on lcd you have the less ass it looks.
You can upscale the image with an OSSC, Framemeister, or Retrotink2X
But really you're better off emulating if you want to play at 2K and have it not look like ass.
It is going to look like shit no matter what. Your best options for a somewhat acceptable picture on a 4k TV are either running ps2 games from a PS3 or using pcsx2 for the games that it works perfect with
it will look like shit
ps2 looks awful on 4k display.
how about 1080p? and are ps2s easily hackable? i cant deal with pcsx2 anymore.
mylifeingaming did a good episode on this: youtu.be
56' 4k tv here
Dont listen to these snobs
I played many wii games on this tv and it looks shit yes but tolerable after some time to a point where its stops bothering you. Just roll with whatever you have
It really depends on the game though. I've tried playing burnout 3 on my 4k TV and the flickering caused by missing texture filtering and worsened by the low resolution made the game practically unplayable for me with higher speed cars because I couldn't make out the track anymore
I play a PS2 on a 1080p all the time and while its not ideal its playable. One thing you have to factor in is how well your TV displays 480i resolution, as newer TV's have tended to drop lower resolution support. I got mine in 2014 and it doesn't support 240p at all, so to play PS1 games I have to hook the console up to my 6" CRT.
Another big thing is that the PS2's native upscaler is pretty shit, hence why it looks bad. HOWEVER, you can get OpenPS2Loader to adjust the display resolution. This has issues with some games, can only be done with games installed to your HDD (afaik), and affects the display resolution and not the rendering resolution. But from my experience, setting output res to 1080p enhances the quality and crispness of the image exponentially at the cost of forcing the game into widescreen. I haven't played around with it enough to find other compatible resolutions, and the widescreen thing could just be my TV as well.
PS2's are very easy to hack iirc, though its been a few years since I did mine. Get a phat and a network adapter so you can stick the entire catalog on a hard drive without having to worry about the laser dying. You just have to use a disc swap with certain games (I used 007 Agent Under Fire) to install Free McBoot and then you're gold. The "hack" is actually on the memory card and not the console, so once you have done it once you only need to copy over the data to new memory cards.
Component cables + Retrotink line doubler = best PS2 experience outside of playing on a BC PS3.
Emulate it at higher resolution.
emulation sucks
you can force 4:3 when ps2 is displaying stretched 1080i on tv display settings on some televisions. it squishes the format into right aspect ratio.
Yeah that's what I figured. My shitty Insignia doesn't give me the option though.
If you're planning to play a PS2 on anything but a CRT be ready to drop some change on a line doubler at the very least. Just hooking up cables to an HDTV will result in a pretty eye-rapey image.
this is where it gets weird
you can buy whatever converter but it isn't going to stop the ps2 from various interlaced image types per game
like you can hdmi mod your n64 and it'll still look better than your ps2
480i content CAN look nice on an HDTV, but you'll want some kind of upscaler since most HDTVs do a fucking terrible job of deinterlacing. Watch My Life in Gaming's PS2 video to get an idea of what you're getting into.
Component cables through an OSSC.
more like mylifeinnothavingsex
there is actually a soft mod for ps2 that essentially overclocks it to run at higher res
ex sierra janitor and hidden gems extraordinaire metal jeses did a vid on this
even when using component cables on a 1080p screen it didnt look too hot even on the games that supported progressive scan
if I'm playing PS2 I stick to my crt with component cables
I can just imagine 4k looking like even more ass than 1080p
i recommend sticking with a crt if you can
but if you must go 4k, use component cables
Consumer CRT with a decent set of S-Video cables is how God intended
sell it on e-bay, connect your computer to your TV and emulate instead so you can play at a high resolution.
I use the Retrotink with Sony brand component cables and it works great. 55 inch Samsung.
my 1080p plasma is pretty old. it has a 4:3 mode. maybe I should try hooking my ps2 up see how it does.
Why are you playing old shit like the ps2 in 2019??
PCSX2
because games have only gotten worse lil zoom zoom
I've never seen a 4K tv with component input. You'll need a high quality HDMI converter.
I'm assuming you haven't played ps4 then boomer
OSSC expensive be really effective for modern displays
Do not trigger the physicallets.
A lot of PS2 games render at resolution lower than 640x480 despite outputting 480i and these look like blocky shit. I'm not sure if it looks like that on every TV or if some have better scalers for low res they would look better. That said Wii games and games that are properly 640x480 look pretty decent on 1080p TV.
If it doesn't find it (they're damn finicky about the PS2 for some reason) then a cheap option is one of those chinese HDMI converters and an expensive one would be an OSSC or Framemeister.
>emulating KH2 when the PS4 version has 2D UI elements that won't murder your eyes and 60fps with comparatively less glitches
PS2 version has mods for that and PS4 version is buggier as a matter of fact, is missing sounds, and the cutscenes only render at 30fps.
I tried doing a setup with just my new flatscreen. The resolution and aspect ratio were fine, but the screen movement for older consoles made me a bit dizzy. Frankly, I would just get a decent CRT and connect legacy consoles to that.
I have my PS2 hooked up via component to my 4k TV right now. It looks like ass and I don't recommend it but it's good enough to play some Klonoa.
