In a word: Structured.
In a more detailed sense:
It's a game of both sides constantly increasing their pressure over time.
You have your Vanguard which gets stronger over the course of the game and up to five rearguards.
As the game progresses you Vanguard can go up to a grade 3 from 0.
The goal is to defeat the opponent by putting six cards into the opponent's damage zone by attacking their Vanguard.
Opponent interaction is similar to Dragon Ball Super in that the primary form is guarding your Vanguard or other units from the opponent's attacks.
The game also has its own built in "anime"/fighting game comeback system in the form of triggers, 16 cards in your deck that when revealed from the top of your deck by attacking with the vanguard or taking damage can turn the tide of battle.
All in all, it's a fun and fast paced game and feel free to ask if you have any questions.

If you hate the linearity of some archetypes how about combining some archetypes that have synergy with each other and coming up with your own combos?
I play the invoked engine with odd_eyes because in odd-eyes i rarely ever normal summon so having Aliester searching for invocation is a good bait for hand traps and when it actually goes through you can fusion summon stuff using your opponent's graveyard and what not sometimes ending some cool as boards.
