My main question is how would it work. Skull Girls sprites are pretty reliant on squash and stretch, so in order to fit in with the other sprites they’d have to drop that for the most part. And I cannot see them doing it without making the moves look really awkward.

Well, when Skullgirls started development, the first character finalized was Filia, so she became the “base” of a lot of characters. What that means is that whenever a new character was made, they couldn’t just be done from scratch; they had to build off of Filia. Filia with a bunch of command grabs became Cerebella; Fillia with a bunch of projectiles became Peacock. When animations finally started getting finalized, it wouldn’t happen all at once; for example, when Cerebella was still being developed, if she performed a Diamond Drop, and the animation wasn’t finalized, the Filia base would take the place of the Cerebella until the move was finished. For other moves, that order was reversed. The image of Filia morphing into other fighters, and then back into Filia was what inspired the character of Double.
So I’d want Filia, Cerebella, Peacock, and Double at the very least, as a neat little nod to how the game was made.
Beyond that, I’d want Big Band and Beowulf, because they’re cool

It’s quite simple, really.
Fighting game designs are the most appealing in every aspect because fighting games lend themselves very well to animation.
What I mean by that is this; characters in fighting games have the most opportunities to express character and any sort of unique appeal to the audience, mainly because of a fight being a very pure form of visual storytelling. We can learn a lot from someone just by how they fight and how they act in one. The best example I can give is how FG character designers tend to match playstyles to character archetypes.
Take Charge characters, for example. Charge characters are unique in that they literally can’t spam their specials due to them having a timer attached to them. Therefore, one must precisely plan out every move they’re going to do. Every action must have meaning. So, as a result, a lot of charge characters look dignified, calculating, and/or experienced, due to their playstyle necessitating that. Take Parasoul, who fights like a fencer and has moves named after chess techniques, and Guile, who’s name literally means shrewdness, for example. Sabrewulf from Killer Instinct is a super unique example, as his charge inputs have no delay on them. What this means is that the best way to use him is to flick your controller in various directions as fast as you can, like sort of a twitching motion. This directly mirrors Sabrewulf’s story arc, as he’s a tortured soul literally losing his mind due to becoming a werewolf and is currently trying to find a cure before he becomes a frenzied beast.
And there are tons of examples; Grapplers tend to have features that are huge and imposing to help people realize that you shouldn’t be close to them ever, for one

How well does fortune do solo? Seems like all the high placing solo characters are rushdown characters, and that projectile spammers like peacock cant keep up without assists to spam.

The experimental shit Skullgirls could have dabbled with was insane. Mike Z was an idea guy who was also a programmer, and Alex Ahad was an idea guy who's also the head artist. So anything either can conceptualize can be realized completely
They were gonna do a character of mostly disjoints, Eliza's blood was supposed to work something like Carmine's, but more crazy, Aeon was going to literally be able to restart positions like in training mode by setting the match back to the start, Issac was going to actively use time travel to punch you from the past, but the damage would only go through if he didn't get hit before then, since he'd have to go back in time to actually punch you
That's fair. But his unique mechanic was gonna be that pressing punch after certain attacks would make the tank detonate, right? Kind of sounds like Aganos's chunks, it'd be pretty hard to mess that up

Using the opponent's teammates would work just as well. Depending on how she's balanced, it could be a tool she could do without too, not the entire basis of her character. Like characters who have really good assist moves that aren't that great when used great solo, it doesn't mean they can't be played solo.
