the west simply doesn't respect video games as a medium. video games are viewed as the most lowbrow form of entertainment. so when hollywood decides to adapt a video game, they go into it with no respect for the source material and no understanding of why people like the game they're adapting to begin with. they assume they know better because they work in a more respected medium.
the truth, of course is that they don't know better. throwing out the aspects of the source material that people actually liked and replacing it with soulless hollywood garbage always results in an inferior product.

i don't really agree with that theory. you could say the same thing about pro sports, but it's a huge industry and a huge part of american culture that people aren't ashamed of at all.
i think the real root cause is just that the game industry became firmly entrenched in the west long after music, movies and tv did. so it kind of gets viewed as the "minor leagues" by the more established industries.
