Epic hardly even makes money on the games sold on EGS in the west, and they admittedly can't even make money on games sold in developing countries because of the higher transaction fees because 12% is too little for that.
It is highly unlikely that they would spend money to shill an overall not very profitable project, this whole EGS aggression is mostly just Sweeney's autism to lower the taxes on digital distribution, as he talked about this stuff years before EGS was even a thing and he attacked google and steam for taking so much money away from creators.
Also, unlike Steam, EGS is not even released in china, and Tencent probably doesn't have much to do with this project of Epic, since it's unlikely they would invest in something that mostly just exists for the sake of someone's ideologies.
