I think my expectations were too high going into this game based on all the hype I saw for it. The gut-punch of "Humanity is long dead and the only thing that remains are self-aware man-made shells larping as humans" would have hit harder if it didn't feel like a thematic retreading of the first NieR. The whole "Are androids and machines functionally human?" seems pretty much the same as "Are gestalts and replicants functionally human?"

But I guess what's really important are the characters. Which are... Fine? Everyone is very adorable or sexy, but I don't think Automata does as good a job of endearing the player to the main cast as NieR does. 9S is maybe the character that pulled at my heart the most, since he's the most vocal (and just a very good boy towards 2B), but the hinting that he's actually some sort of repressed sadist soured that. And 2A's entire fucking backstory and character motivation is buried in a supplemental stageplay.
