The game sold 1.8 million digital copies, in a month. That's $108 million+ of direct revenue to the platforms (Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, Steam) then split apart to the devs and so on, keep in mind tons of people bought the Kombat Pack, or the time krystals and so on.
What happened was, a game split across four different platforms sold immensely well on all of these platforms, primarily in digital format. So given that these retailers like Gamestop and Amazon realized that the digital versions of these games were selling much, much better than the physical versions and they were likely overstocked, they temporarily reduced the price until they're no longer overstocked. It's a continuing trend you will see with most AAA games, because the average consumer isn't dumb enough to buy a physical game anymore. In other words, the average dumb consumer, is probably smarter than the average dumbass browsing this board.
Well let's see. For starters preloading kicks ass. I remember lining up to get a new grand theft auto game or new smash bros or something like that. A rustic, nostalgic experience sure, but a vastly inferior one to just preloading. You get the entire game fully installed, all updates patched, ready to go the minute the clock strikes midnight on release date. So rather than either line up for a fucking game or wait for Amazon to send your package or Gamestop to open their doors and tell you that game you were looking for is completely sold out everywhere, instead you just have your game ready to play, instantly. Not to mention switching games is faster.

Honestly, normally I'm on Yea Forums's side of the "Get Woke, Go Broke" campaign, like with BFV (with actual facts and bad business practice instead of bitching about female soldiers, I was upset it wasn't a finished fucking game and EA was just like "MONeY PLeAse!") But with MK11, the only real complaint was the horrible grind, which they are working on. After that, it just seemed like people were triggered because they couldn't see the "boobies" of the women and how Jax was "Woke." Sure, Skarlet's default is ugly as shit (thank GOD for the ponytail design), but Mortal Kombat was never really about the sex appeal and the Jax ending is uncannotical (let's be real, Jax would do something like that... HE'S BLACK!), it was always gameplay and violence first and story second. The only time the MK had a lot of sex appeal was with MK9, but I always felt too preverted playing as the female characters because of it, it was a bit much. But the game plays quite good and the story was excellent. I can't get on the attacking side this time and I'm happy this game sold well.

You want an explanation? Here's the simplest answer that no one seems to understand. The real reason why the sexual stuff doesn't exist anymore is entirely because of WB and corporate decisions. MK9 was advertised with hot cosplayers because WB let them do whatever since their track record was already shit. After the massive success of that, WB realized how much money they can make off of NRS games if they did real marketing. Nobody seems to notice how much shilling existed for Injustice 1, especially with media coverage. It got a fucking prime-time television ad with several talk shows.
Essentially it all comes down to WB wanting to market the game but the massive honkers makes it hard for them to show it off to the casual public.

Or do you think that Shaolin Monks built up the name of the series. So that point of "capitalizing on going mainstream" is moot, since Mortal Kombat was super recognisable and beloved since the 90's-00's. And Mortal Kombat 9 was nothing more and nothing less than a remaster of the original Trilogy. They just opted for a proper future story mode and a reset of the timeline to do it. No. The reasons are clearly political/social. They CHOSE to become PG, like so many other western-originated mediums outside of the western video game industry. Since Sony is now controlled by the leftists and SJWs of Commiefornia, companies want to get on their good side and also gain those sweet e-journalistic praises as well for best marketing.
