The main issue is that kind of style is hard to emulate and execute for a game. It works best as a Cuphead/Wario Land Shake It kind of game, but not much else.

Wario Land 4 was sick because it took cartoony injuries and turned them into power ups that would help you clear the level.
If you get caught on fire you will become engulfed in flames and then you would use that to get past obstacles which had to be burnt down.
There was also a bee that would sting wario and then his cheeks would puff up and then he would float through the level like a balloon.
