Is there such a thing as 1v1 players who never played VS game properly?

I never played the meta in this game so I don't know who's high tier / low tier I just played against my buddy and we just picked our favorite guys or do challenges like try to beat each other with characters we were unfamiliar with, and of course passing the controller between each other trying to beat Shin Akuma or Ult. Rugal

Sometimes swapping Ken for Yuri. Mostly played either C-groove or N-groove

I played it when I was a kid so I stuck with the only characters I knew, Ryu, Bison and Akuma.
Later I started playing with Dhalsim, Iori and Rugal and sometimes as the female characters when my parents weren't watching, especially Mai
I also played in the mode that let you do the specials with the right stick
