How well have the turn based Phantasy Star games aged? I've been meaning to play the port on Switch and emulate the rest, but I think I might be too spoiled after playing games unrelated to it like 0 and Online.

1 has aged about as well as the NES Final Fantasies.

4 has a macro system and did combination spells before chrono trigger

PS3 and PS4 are easy to play.

2 was always a pain to play, but the setting was really interesting.

PS1 and PS2 are a little rough around the edges
PS3 and PS4 are more playable.

Character credation, it's one thing I like from modern games.

The first game was pretty much my introduction to RPGs, but I went for western ones right after it, it makes me want to see CRPG elements on it.

I'll think it'll definitely be hard to go back and play them after playing the newer games but if you like playing old games in general I think there's definitely games that aged worse. 4 is agreed to have aged the best though, it plays closest to more modern day rpgs. Personally I also find 1 alright to play, but the dungeons in 2 and the huge empty maps + slow walking speed in 3 are a pain (though there are some ports that speed up walking speed in all the games iirc).

There's some yuri stuff of her out there that looks pretty consensual at least.

Rather than missing the boat, they went out on one of the first boats. It's just that a combination of systems that were dead in the english speaking world and most of the other popular ones at the time being for the PC kind of killed it. So they had the right idea to start out with, but Sega fucked up pretty hard afterwards. PSO2 looked like it could have caught on when it came out, but the years-long delay on a global version made sure it was DOA when it finally was released.

Phantasy Star Online is a masterpiece and at the time I felt like it was a natural evolution of Phantasy Star's dungeon crawler gameplay. it wasn't until Universe that the change fully took hold.

I still remember hearing about it as a kid, I pictured walking across the planets similar in appearance to the ones in 4 but in third person and [3D] with real people following me behind in a straight line.

But instead I got a lobby simulator with a shitty story and boring grindy combat. I thought it was cool as a kid but we deserved way better. Same with Final Fantasy fans and their awful single player and MMO games of today.

It really set the tune for a dark space adventure really well.

It's not my favorite RPG of that time but it's in my top 5 for sure.

I like both Wrens from the old games a lot, I always thought if was pretty cool for the series to make 2 different characters from the same android line but different models. I'd like to see that return in the series (though I guess there's Lou in PSU if that counts for something).

Yeah it's the same game just the beginning isn't as challenging since they made enemies give more xp so you don't level up as slow. They changed the art style to be more like Phantasy star from around that time (and to not run into legal trouble since the original game is very much a passion project with tons of "homages" to popular stuff like the guards being boba Fett from star wars) all the dungeons now have an actual art style to them that isn't different colored bricks, instead of blue bricks for caves it's now actual rock walls so stuff like that. Alis is still super cute

Yeah, they're 12 player instances. I'd say that PSO2 and PSU (but not PSO) meet the requirements for being an MMO though, due to having a persistant world that is part of the game in the lobby areas. No real gameplay in the PSO lobby though, so it's hard to call that more than a 4 player game.

Because there are no descriptions ingame for what spells and abilities do, I had to try and figure out the effects and write them down myself as I played. I essentially had my own spell book in real life that I depended on, sometimes updating or correcting effects of the harder to judge stat increases and so on, and it was a wonderful experience.

I never really found out the full list until I was able to get internet but I'll never forget the joy I got whenever I found a new combo to use. Grand cross is probably still my personal favorite.

So if you make PSV, everyone will go, "Okay", and it'l sell 200,000.
If you do PSO2 in English, no one will care because WoW and XIV.

You can try something new in the world that Phantasy Star built. Not everything has to be about Dark Force. Maybe do something with the Earthmen again, or have a villain exploiting tensions between the rising numan population and the older, more established races, or do a Fallout style storyline where multiple factions are racing to secure control of a PS-II era robotics facility to grant them access to lost technology and therefore supremacy on ruined Motavia. There's all sorts of things you can do with all the pieces PSIV left behind, it's just that the demons won't be there.

This was during the heyday of 3.5, so I used a d20 conversion and just gave everyone special attacks every four levels or so. It wasn't meant to be a completely accurate mechanical replica of the games, just close enough to have fun tooling around Algol with.

If it's to show off Phantasy Stars very best, I think Alis and Nei seem to be the go to for sure for something like that. I think Alys should be in it for sure as well as at least one of the androids from the last 2 games (maybe they can be psiiis rep since they are the only characters to appear in every single generation, though I like psivs Wren and Demi a lot too). If they put one of the Wrens in, it's be nice if they put the other one in since they're both different lines of the same model (psiiis model is made more for speed and attack I think while psivs is built like a tank). It'd also be cool if there was a tag out move that triggered a combo like in psivs, as well as having one bosses like Neifist be enemies in a story mode and maybe even made unlockable later on (it'd be amusing if Seth was included in this).

Phantasy Star Zero is a sequel that takes place 500+ years after Phantasy Star Online but is set on planet Coral where Pioneer 1 and 2 of PSO came from. It features the completed MOTHER project that Dr. Montague was working on as a possible way of restoring Coral in PSO.

in the shop area of pso2 there is a green haired newman named "Alis". If you have cleared episode 1 story she will give you client orders. She is not a member of Arks but she is investigating Arks. When she gives you her partner card in missions she uses the Heart of Poumn from PSO. Clearing more episodes unlocks more orders from her. Eventually she reveals that she is some kind of spacetime traveler. She also appears on the back of the old PSO art book the Book of Hunters.

Well that explains a lot of the flaws. Kinda nuts they did so much in such a short amount of time. I assume PS3 had about 2 weeks. It's so dumb and weird I wouldn't be surprised if that was the one that took longest.

named "Minima" (mini me) in phantasy star gaiden. Newmans are artificial humans. Also a mysterious hunewearl comes out of a portal in pso during a very hidden subquest and gives you the heart of poumn.

The data memory girl was pretty cute, I wish she and other npcs like the transporter girl at least had names to make it easier to find fanart of them. Especially when one-off characters like the music teacher got a name.
