Is Elona worth getting into? I've tried a few times but never stuck with it
Roguelikes are just a hack for devs that are too stupid to design a good game
I'm looking for a good roguelike for Switch that I can lose myself to. One that will forcibly rip me from society and bring deep grief to my family and friends.
This reminds me that Elona is the most maximum comfy game there is, only issue is it sucks you in and time flies by. I couldn't help but stop playing because it felt like my life span was shortening from Elona. It's just so good.
I like Elona+ and DCSS.
>For switch
Slim pickins
for me, it's CDDA
Are there roguelikes that are fully hand-crafted? Because every time I play one it feels like I'm doing the same shit over and over again with at best a paint job, and yet I'm not progressing towards anything. Makes me wonder why I even bother playing or care about losing the character at all. NEO Scavenger is the only exception I know, and the best roguelike I've played so far.
I know, I suppose I need to wait longer. I prefer mobile/handheld platforms for roguelikes because it makes for a great time killer on train rides and flights. I tried DCSS and it was great, but relying on a digital keyboard sucks. I thoroughly enjoyed an incredibly basic roguelike I found on the Play Store for free called Rogue Hero. It has an excellent interface.
try cataclysm dark days ahead if you haven't already
>Are there roguelikes that are fully hand-crafted?
Not really, no. Procedural/random generation is kind of a core component of what makes a roguelike.
ADOM, Omega, SOTW, TOME all have semi-fixed overworlds with some amount of plot and quests and stuff.
Caves of Qud has a fixed overworld with a main questline
That's too bad. I've been playing Demon on and off for the past couple of weeks, and while it's not a terrible SMT clone, the monotony of it is catching up to me. Random generated dungeons are just boring to explore once you've seen a few.
Which version would you recommend?
Played ADOM and TOME (only the base game, skipped the expansions). Haven't reached the ending in either, but I appreciated the fixed stuff and especially ADOM's mutations, walking around as a warped monstrosity was fun. Might pick them up again some day. Will take a look at Omega and SOTW.
How do I get into Elona?
It's in Early Access, right? Worth waiting for the full release?
just grab the launcher it can keep you up to date on the experimentals which are much better than the stables
you go to the /jp/ thread and choose between the piss version or the non piss version
Alright, thanks. Ascii, tiles, or either's fine?
Dead Cells. Really fucking fast paced combat and I love it to death.
Long time ago I learned programming and did it mostly because I wanted to make roguelike. Making a roguelike is very good programming practice, but after I realized I would never a) finish making one b) make money off of it, I just sort of stopped developing.
I WISH I FUCKING KNEW THEY WOULD BECOME THIS BIG AND POPULAR
Dead Cells
Gungeon
Isaac Rebirth
Wizard of Legend
the tiles are pretty good but i say it's up to you, the launcher downloads the tiles by default i think
SOTW and Omega are both very similar to ADOM, but ADOM is better. So I would only recommend those if you're done with ADOM and want more like it.
Make ToME addon classes.
Those are Roguelite though.
Getting back into UnReal World, it's still one of the best roguelikes imo and I'm glad those guys finally making money. Glad for ADOM as well
Oh it's not about the ability to make something, I just hope I never quit doing them so I would have a headstart so to speak?
>People are misusing Roguelike again
who cares its a trash genre any way
it's basically a single player mmo, lots of grinding and learning how to game the system to your advantage
>People want to have this same discussion for the 50million time
Just let it go, who even cares
>fursuits and sex toys
Arguably more gameplay per buck so I really don't care. Also encourages different types of strategies more than pure roguelikes
Playing through Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2. I don't think I like this genre.
Once you 100% a roguelite it's a roguelike, therefore all roguelites instantly have more gameplay and more (fun), change my mind
Reminder that in 2008 a bunch of autists from all around the world met up in Berlin just to discuss for hours what is and what isn't considered a roguelike.
Yes but it doesn't sink as much time as some other roguelikes.
Elona runs out of content pretty fast but Elona+ fixes that but still, things get more repetitive after a few dozen hours. Wouldn't call it short but more like 50-100 hours of fun instead of 200-500h of fun like in some roguelikes. Still, it is a really enjoyable and interesting experience.
They still don't belong in this thread
goldmine for extra rags desu
>decided to check DCSS last version
>removed prayer
>removed Zot Defense
does elona open up more later on? im at lvl20 and just opened a museum
Elona+ with FF music pack.
Recommend me a new roguelike. dcss was rly good (two years ago), tome is great, nethack is ehhh
Default mp3 pack is still the best.
No.
ADOM
I don't think I've ever listened to it.
If only they knew how bad things really were.
Demon
Not an argument.
Maybe that's true for nuRoguelikes, but real ones typically do things that are normally considered impossible or impractical for the medium, like procedural monsters and items or sheer variety of content
>Go into game files
>Open in notepad
>Change all values to have everything unlocked from the start
>It's suddenly a roguelike
Heh, nothing personelle, kid
Cry more
Cope
>procedural monsters
Panlords are great
shit b8 m8
Brogue if you really want some different from just mindless combat.
Isaac
I tried to capture turdak without checking to see that the little girls all had Lucky Aid.
not a roguelike
>I refuse to believe what is fact about the two genres so it's bait.
Dude have a serious think about that. If a dev made a roguelite but decided last minute to give you everything from the start, it would be a roguelike. There's literally nothing stopping you from making all the good games user listed into games that you personally enjoy more by tweaking files.
I always feel weak in Elona and pet wrecks every thing.
My platinum god save file begs to differ, I can't unlock anything and every run has all items available. Huh, wow that's just a roguelike.
This is just a sadistic game from devs who literally hate their fan base
Anomaly has become very difficulty ever since Paracelsus got buffed by the addition of the Matter element.
How does having every item unlocked in a game makes it a roguelike?
Is this a new meme I don't get?
its not "like rogue", my nigger
if you want to be specific - it's not turnbased or gridbased.
I think he's pretending to be retarded
He's not very convincing at the pretending part.
Are 'lites welcome here?
Cogmind
No there's always turbo spergs who spam these threads so they can keep pretending likes >>>> literal shit >>>> lites.
no roguelites you double minotaur
Why thats a very spergy thing for you to type user. I suspect you are part of the problem.
Why don't you just make your own roguelite thread?
>Light of revelation shines on fire drake hatchling, revealing its true nature as a worm that walks!
'kay. Thanks!
You have fallen into the water
A slime touches you
I may do that, but I was first checking to see if this was an appropriate thread to talk about the game that I wanted to talk about.
Apparently it is not, and that is entirely reasonable and okay.
How was I to know?
Only roguelike I ever beat is DCSS. I beat it six times with the three basic melee classes, monk, hunter, and a fire elementalist for good measure. I cant help but feel like theres no reason to play it anymore.
classes mean nothing in stone soup
it was 15 rune wins i hope?
No, it's not. A roguelike is turn based and tile based.
use retrodays you filth
There was never a reason to play DCSS desu. It's stripped down shit that got ruined by mentally ill devs.
patrician taste, mein neger
hellcrawl is good
also there's fork somewhere that have old content with all the new stuff but I've lost it after reinstalling chrome
how hard is elona to play without a numpad, and how hard is it to get into magic in it
>blocks your path
I've never used numpad. YUBN is superior for movement and close to other keys you use often.
>all this buffs
>still can't get a gf
That's the last boss. He already has a gf.
Wizard of Legend chads where are you at
Been hooked on DoomRL lately. Simple but challenging and addicting
>want to download the latest Elona+ version
>this happens
It's ded. Is that pastebin maintained by anyone?
I hate roguelikes because there's no worse feeling than finally fucking surviving for so long until the floors get progressively harder until there's 4 fucking dragons each hitting you and every turn you take to run away one of them is hitting you with something and then some fucking ghoul ganks you and you lose everything
FUCK
They've turned it into a FPS.
apply fist
ROUGELIKES not fucking ROUGELITES
What the heck? Good lord what happened to that game? Last time I checked 0.16 or 0.17 were the only good versions to play.
are there any roguelikes that don't waste your fucking time
I just started playing CataclysmDDA and I must say they found a way to make a zombie survival game fun.
Be sure to use the retrodays tileset
Forgot my image
>play DDA for some time
>literally nothing to do
>try to survive lab challange
>succeed on 21st try
>character is so fucking strong I don't need anything
>90% of gameplay is gathering food and pumping my ass full of mutagen in attempt to make a perfect waifu
>finally succeed
>feel empty
game's fucking BORING
rolling the dice was the only thing that kept me playing
I'm using the default tileset it came with. I'm not sure how to change it. I have RetroDaysTileset in the game directory, though.
>rougelikes
Pssh, amateurs. Roguelikes are so 80s. It's the 21st century, children. I'm playing text-based grand strategy rape simulators, get on my level.
I stumbled on a fun mode earlier. Go with the Skater job, and the "Trapped in the mall" scenario. His rollerblades make him like 4x faster than any zombies on the smooth mall floor. It's a game of keepaway.
the option to change tilesets is at the very bottom of the graphic tab Retrodays gives you a nice mix of detailing the world without losing the original look of ascii providing a perfect mix of both
>Once you 100% a roguelite it's a roguelike
This is wrong
Yep, I found the option. This is way better, and there's like 12 other tilesets in the directory too. Thank you for this.
The wiki never fails
elona.fandom.com
are any of the TOME expansions good?
Thanks.
The difference between roguelikes and lites doesn't have to do with unlocks.
>text based grand strategy
Please tell me what game user, I wish to become as autistic as you
looks like Eratohok
yea its worth it
i was homeless 7 years ago and this shit was my only game for a while
still remember the heavy grinding ive done so i can get a magic evo heart and god evo heart
i spent two weeks grinding for the magic heart to drop from certain enemies and at least a month just to get enough levels and ice resist gear for the forest dog god
Now if only those fucking hacks at Project Zomboid could model their game after CDDA.
user...
not even TOME is good
no u
What's the best version of DCSS?
Hellcrawl
make me grandpa
crank up monster spawns to 10 and max out the city size, pick the missed start or any other one where you start in a town and try to escape the city
Demon RL needs more love.
It's just so plain though.
I suck too much at it. I was never good at SMT either.
What even is Streets of Rogue? Every time I look at the steam page I get no info on what the game actually is just, "Look at all the insane stuff you can do!" Can anybody who's played it explain the gameplay loop and general premise to me?
I hope you mean the tileset and not the gameplay.
It's nothing but discrete encounters with enemies who all follow the same mechanics as you. How is that not plain?
Because the mechanics you have available are more complex than bump bump cast and the large variety of skills means the tools you have available to you are almost never the same as the enemy's?
>implying I need to learn the lunar language
We have men working on it.
It's boring, basically it's like an arcade game where the game gives you objectives like "incapacitate this guy" or "steal this item" and you have to find a way to do it, then once you do all the objectives you escape the level. You can do things like put cigarettes into a building's filtration system to make them take damage, which causes the NPCs to leave to investigate, then try to sneak in or you can just man mode everything whatever. I can't recommend it the game is ok but there's much better Roguelites like Death Road to Canada.
Mage Guild is my favorite roguelike and I wish it were still being developed. Things like deterministic combat, monsters with variable intelligence, and item/resource management are uncommon features in the genre that I would like to see more often.
I haven't played Elona+ custom since updating my old ass 2013 install sometime in 2017 to 1.68, I get this pop up restoring my save everytime and haven't tested anything else to see if its fucked
Should I make a new character and fresh install or resume where I left off? I'm assuming it was after the OG chat server was taken offline and it's just an error from the host? I think I remember editing it to a temp custom server... is that still up? Is Custom still the hot shit to be playing? Whatever happened to Kai and who's the biggest neckbeard character at the moment and is it still Kai? Any content after the Gods?
To update to newest version I backup my save, go to my house, and what again? I knew you had to do special shit in some certain area because it was a dangerous update process.
What are the biggest things I've missed coming from 1.68?
You might get more help on /jp/ although it may take a bit to get a response.
It's been in early access for 4 years, so no
Gets updates every 2 weeks or so
Any good hentai roguelikes?
maybe try porting your save to a newer regular elona+ then port that save to elona+ custom?
read the thread
I finally managed to beat DCSS. It was just a three rune run and I was running Minotaur berserker but it was still fun as fuck. Had a +9 demon whip of antimagic and just face rolled endgame
Any other roguelikes that have the same sort of race/class variety as DCSS?
I think roguelikes are fantastic but I'm too casual to play ASCII, shit interfaces and convoluted controls. That is why TOME is my favourite
no, most roguelikes with different races and classes have actual differences between their choices and have actual variety compared to DCSS
poschengband
but if you struggle to win in dcss you won't have that much fun
i advice you get good first
Hey. I also got really close as a gargoyle earth elementalist
it hungers...
>ASCII
most rl's we've been mentioning on this thread dont even use ascii so you really should give them a try
cdda's controls aint even that bad considering most of your actions will be dedicated on crafting menu so your most used actions on combat will be pass 1 move or fire you weapon
elona even has that nested function system so you can play it on a gamepad without worrying about convoluted controls
dcss has a tutorial thats no nonsense and should help you get used to the controls easily
Grind: the genre.
i went for a roleplay build where a powerful witch got turned into a cat and it turned out pretty fun
too bad you get insta-gibbed so easy as a cat
Sil a best.
are there roguelikes that don't look like shit?
They do all add lots of content, but as with base TOME, some of it is great and some not so much so.
stoneshard
Tangledeep
>removed a worthless action and instead turned into a bunch of spells that replicate its only real functions
>removed a worthless game mode that no one cared about until it was deleted
frogcomposband is cool
Half Life 2 is a pretty cool roguelike.
yikes that's some big cringe you posted friendo
One Way Heroics+
