I don't know if this is controversial, but I don't think 2D Metroid's combat is especially good. At most it's serviceable. None of the bosses or enemies stand out mechanically, they pretty much get by on presentation alone.
Honestly despite the overuse of the counter mechanic, Samus Returns actually has the best combat. The bosses, even the repeating Metroid fights, are much more enjoyable than bosses in other games.

For whatever reason, I missed Super Metroid back in the 90s. When I played it the first time on the Wii U, I played it twice in a row, I found it so good. I did my best to 100% it, finished the game, and started it again without thinking twice.
