i hate their plot tropes and while im not against the idea of turn based combat, it makes fights with random mobs range from tedious to unbearable

I just beat Ni No Kuni. I still need to do the alchemy sidequest, and the * Rank arena.
Final boss was a decent challenge, but Zodiarchangel was a lot easier somehow.

Tried playing tales of berseria but it's just so fucking boring I couldn't stand it for more than 8 hours. And honestly that one experience discouraged me from touching a jrpg ever again.

I just finished Tales of Vesperia and it was simply bad. I'm baffled that Vesperiafags exist. Every aspect of that game ranged between "mediocre" and "terrible". What it is that people see in that game, I have no idea.

Vesperia is the only Tales game I've played. It came highly recommended to me by two different people I know IRL, which is the only reason I didn't drop it ~1/3rd through.

I would say my favorite action JRPG is Kingdom Hearts 1. If we're not willing to count KH, then Star Ocean 2.

KH combat was actually fun and the storyline, while cheesy and full of holes, was at least charming. (I'm only talking about KH1, ignore the rest of the series)

Vesperia's combat was absolute dogshit for literally the first 60 hours, until you finally get enough artes and weapon skills to be able to make combos, at which point it improves to being okay. Vesperia's story was retarded on several levels and had terrible pacing, and literally every potentially interesting subplot or angle that they hint at over the course of the first half of the game gets completely and utterly dropped just to make room for the ancient evil that has awoken, the most boring and hackneyed of plotlines.

No. Sadly. Though Mefmera's still the first real casual filter in the game.
It's 2 but improved, so yes. Dungeons get a bit more complex, the game itself is harder but to balance it out you get a new mechanic of slaving the monster girls you defeated, they do extra attacks or use certain skills during battle.
The post-game isn't as long as the Vita version of 2, though, which is a shame, and you have to fork over like 10 bucks for 3 extra dungeons, one based in Tears to Tiara 2, another in Utawarerumono and the last one in White Album 2.

Refrain is good, but the main dungeon crawling is far too easy and the game doesn't really allow for much character building or strategizing due to its mechanics. You play it mostly for the atmosphere and the story, but that's not to say the gameplay itself isn't passable, there's just too much autobattle in the way for it to be legitimately great.
DT2 is more standard in a way, but that allows it to have more interesting choices when it comes to building your party, choosing your skills, adapting to the equipment you get and more. It's really flexible in customization for each role, and in case you're not happy with your current party you can always level reset to rebuild your skills and change classes as well. It has a perfect balance of challenge and core dungeon crawling with dungeons that don't really overstay their welcome (at least until the postgame), but you really have to enjoy that core since the game doesn't play around with many gimmicks and just builds upon layers of complexity with the dungeon design itself and your expanding options as your levels raise. Still, if it manages to scratch that autistic itch within you you'll be looking at spending almost 200 hours for full completion maybe more if you really want all character/class events and learning a stupid island yellowricenigger language just to play the fucking sequel

Picked up Tales of Symphonia with the intention of finally completing everything 100%. I played the shit out of it back in 2005 but never got to unlock everything. I kind of felt like playing a JRPG, so it might as well be one I already know I loved.

Killed the final boss about an hour ago and I just feel empty and disenamored. The thought of sinking 100+ hours more into this makes me feel almost sick for some reason. I guess 15 years difference make you see things differently.

It's pretty ironic since the basic gameplay for Utawarerumono is pretty much the same as that grindy piece of shit, but gives you real tactical options with enough variety to make each fight a good puzzle and good challenge in the hard difficulty. Makes me think they unironically made that game kusoge on purpose to keep the spirit of the series alive.
Its only flaw was the inventory, and that's barely because it does force you to make a lot of hard decisions and think about your next step in return.
