Ridley and K. Rool each had one major thing standing in their way: Ridley's size and K. Rool's irrelevance. They both managed to overcome those issues with enough prodding from fans.
Banjo has two issues: irrelevancy and being a third party. That second one is meaning less and less as time goes on, but it's still important when you look at the other third parties and see that practically all of them have had some sort of recent release.
Banjo and Kazooie have oodles of support, but time will tell if it's enough to get the duo in. This DLC seems to have a lot of qualifiers. Still, I think they've got a decent chance, and they've definitely risen to the top in terms of requests in the wake of characters like Ridley getting in. If they don't make it in the DLC I don't think they're done for. I recall people saying "now or never" for K. Rool in the smash 4 DLC too, and look at how that turned out.
