Dismissing it as "generic" does not do away with it being objectively superior. The only thing wrong with the original YU-NO's style is that in some of the illustrations, the characters have fucked up bug-eyed faces (like the newscaster lady with green hair who nearly has her mouth between her eyes that are way too low on her head). In the majority of scenes however, their features are properly proportioned.

One of the biggest sources of "soulless" of modern illustrations is the lack of strong colors and lack of high contrast (two things that any remotely good looking PC-98 game basically does automatically since they're limited to 16 colors at a time). Pair that flat color tone with often far stiffer, un-dynamic poses and that's where modern stuff is - a significant lack of gesture and life in the illustrations.
