The game I used to know and love is long dead.

There's a combo with it, traditionally it was used with Chaos Emperor Dragon but there's a bunch of other cards that also work, where you drain your opponent's hand of cards and then just keep poking them with Yata-Garasu for 200 damage until you win. Even if they have stuff in the grave it's hard to find anything that works against Yata-Garasu even if you specifically have side deck cards that counter it because Yata-Garasu goes back to the hand during the End Phase.

Most of those cards have been banned for way longer than that for good reason

If you're talking about Worldwide Edition, Kaiba, Yugi, and Mai were literally set to sometimes start the duel with a pre-set combo. They did were even almost guaranteed to do it in the original Japanese version (Expert 2), so if you didn't start the duel with an answer to Kaiba's Cyber Stein combo you lost.

There's a Jap only Yugioh game on the Switch thath as full english translation in the game that has pretty much everything except region exclusive cards.

It is more that the people at Konami R&D don't really understand the modern playerbase, the most obvious example of this are the Kaiju.

The idea was, you give your opponent a big boy and you get your own big boy for free and then the two of you fight things out with those big monsters and their special abilities. It's a really cool and fun concept.

But what happened was that people really only read the first and half line of the effect and were like "huh, I can basically kill anything at the cost of giving my opponent a shitty 2200 beatstick". And people started to only play them to instantly out shit, rather than for the fun monster battle gimmick.
Kaiju Graydle is technically a deck that exists, but it's shit.

If you mean why make new broken cards just to ban it later, it's because Konami is filled with jews and want you to buy their new shit.
If you mean why have a banlist at all, it's because in the cases where they DON'T wanna be jews, some older cards can make newer cards broke due to newer context.
Take a card like original future fusion. When it came out most fusions monsters had very specific requirements and the monsters that make it usually weren't good dead in the grave. Eventually they made more monsters that are better suited to being in the graveyard, as well as more monsters that have more generic fusion materials, to the point where future fusion basicly translated to "throw you deck in the grave and win via BS", Thus a ban until recent years where they changed the card to send cards during the next turn.

No matter how much I love Emilia, she's never ever coming off the limited list, because hand looping is an inherently degenerate mechanic on the same level as non hard OPT burn effects and self-bouncing.
These three things are the bane of yugioh and nearly every card that did one of those 3 things is either banned or limited or errataed to shit.

There are a lot of reasons for banned cards. Early Yugioh had no banned cards because no one at Konami had any idea how big or serious the game would become. Some really simple card design happened in the early days. Destroy all Monsters, Destroy all spells and traps, make it so your opponent can't draw next turn.

The creation of the banlist started because it was the same decks, at least the same 20 or so cards in each deck. That is a very stagnate meta so the first banlist dropped. Later cards would interact in unexpected ways, these would ultimate lead to both stagnate meta's and unfun matches, so certain cards would be banned to prevent this.

Somecards are just so powerful that they limit future card design. Dragon Rulers are designed in a way that they can use almost all Dragon support and fire/water/wind/earth support and theme'd decks. The individual Dragon Rulers were limited, meaning you can only run 1 per deck, which was fine for the time. However it became clear you couldn't make dragon cards or fire/wind/earth/water decks without considering how Dragon Rulers would interact and possible break the game. So they were banned so they can make new types of these cards without considering the Rulers.

The ban list also controls power creep, if there was no banlist, then to sell new cards, then the new decks would have to be quite a bit more powerful for people to wast $600 building a new deck. Powercreep still happens, but shit like Burning Abyss from 2014 has been topping tournaments in 2019 and has never stopped being a meta deck. Burning Abyss has cards on the banlist as well.

Its more concise and themed. A word like flying or trample is like actual interesting creative writing that gets the point across by describing the behavior of the creature or spell, compared to the very legal style of yugioh, as the other user said

The main problem with Synchro cards is their ability to make any British audience crack up laughing whenever their summoning rules are discussed. Because Tuner is pronounced identically to Tuna, resulting in a lot of stupid gags about "slapping a tuna down on the table". Its written in a way so that if you understand the actual rules of the game, the phases and subphases, chaining, ect, you can read any yugioh card and understand how it works 95% of the time. Due to the way they are worded, you can have unique interactions and wording.

Satallarknight Deneb - If this card is Summoned: You can add 1 "Satellarknight" monster from your Deck to your hand, except "Satellarknight Deneb". You can only use this effect of "Satellarknight Deneb" once per turn.

Elemental HERO Stratos - When this card is Normal or Special Summoned: You can activate 1 of these effects, -snip- Add 1 "HERO" monster from your Deck to your hand.

If we were to keyword this, they would have something like "tutor". These are very similar cards but they vary in power level on multiple fronts. "If" vs "when", as far as yugioh terminology goes, IF is a much more powerful effect as it is not susceptible to losing timing, it also allows you to choose your chain order if multiple effects activate at the same time. Deneb also activates on summon, which includes, Normal Summon, Special Summon and Flip summon. Flip summoning isn't too relevant but it is a situational advantage that Stratos does not have. However the main difference is what Statros doesn't say, Stratos can activate its effect as many times as it is normal or special summoned, this make it the far more powerful card despite some advantages Deneb has in its superior wording. These nuances are completely lost if they were just keyworded.

Yugioh has made attempts to shorten the amount of words on the card, Piercing is a actual part of the terminology, before every card with piercig used to say "During battle between (???*) and a Defense Position monster whose DEF is lower than the ATK of this card, inflict the difference as Battle Damage to your opponent.", not they just say "inflict piercing damage". Graveyard has been shorten to GY and there are other ways they have tried to shorten card text.

Please don't associate vanguard with furries. Nobody likes great nature, all you're doing is giving us a worse name to begin with.

My point is that there is so much nuance in the text of these cards that you lose fundamental interactions that make the cards work if you rephrase them in ways that aren't the lengthy and strict PSCT. Yugioh is at least a little convoluted, but it is necessary for things to be exactly as they are.

For instance the reason this card is so brilliantly good is the fact that the semicolon is in the second line of the text and not the first one. Because that way the "send 3 cards from your deck" is a cost and it resolves no matter what upon effect declaration. This is incredibly important, because you can't really stop a cost from being paid easily. Punctuation is one of the most important things in Yugioh. There's many example like this, where a tiny nuance in the text of the card makes or breaks it.

I can keep listing cards all day where a tiny thing in the text is the reason it is good or bad.

YGO is "not-MtG". That is, it's the sort of game that's made to tie in to the same appeal, but willfully changes as many things as possible to be distinct from, an earlier and more successful title or product.

This accounts for almost all of the features of YGO:

- Attack and Defense work by comparing the current active stance stat ("Attack/Defense Mode") of each monster, rather than each's attack to the other's defense
- Monsters pick on each other in one-on-one duels rather than than a squad moving to the attack, the enemy choosing how to counter
- Using attack-defense positions and face down monsters, flip effect, spells and traps rather than tapping
- Using a per-turn one normal summon/set limit and tributes for most summoning rather than one Land set per turn and Mana as a common fungible resource primarly driven by Lands

Some of the above is a mixed bag. But then there are outright egregious stuff, namely the way all the different types of card are categorised. It's retarded.

- Monsters have exactly ONE type and exactly ONE attribute. Types are an arbitrarily retarded rollercoaster, with huge gaps and petty distinctions running amok. Attributes are bread and vague. Neither really matters much outside of Dragons and a few others.
- Instead, it's the monster Archetype that typically matters. These things are an ad-hoc clusterfuck of retroactive theming devised after YGO's popularity and spread. Because there's no true formal system for housing Archetypes, all of a creature's relevant Archetypes must instead be crammed into their name, hence Blue Eyes White Paragon Evigishki Penumbral Madolche Magician Spendra: The 9th Chicken Molester. Short, simple, memorable names sink to the bottom.
- Out of bizarre tradition, Effect and Normal monsters are a meaningful distinction, but for the various "weird" summon cards - Fusion, Ritual, Synchro, XYZ, and any others they've added over the years - whether they're Effect or not doesn't matter.

This is actually kind of what I thought. Yugioh is convoluted because it was created to compete for the market of another product, and must obscure that by being different for its own sake

- Most are Effect anyway, because there's no reason for cards NOT to be effect given the bland way basic attacks resolve, and the fact that the card cost system is arbitrarily eccentric and clunky due to the use of cards as a sacrifice-based currency system. Normal summoning for instance - all cards require either one, two or no sacrifices, Some cost gradient huh? So the limit of 2000, 2600 and 3300 has been set by basically random for ever now on the max attack of a non-mandatorily-special-summoned card and that's that. If your card has less attack than those numbers, don't bother summoning it unless it has an effect. Or is an ingredient in some arcane, satanically-specific combo recipe.

Ultimately the spirit of faggy "individualistic" combos that in practice are all the same is congenial to the general vibe of YGO, its anime and target player base which is Mary Sue lowest common denominator trash. And yet, YGO is still a decent game. That tells you something about all the other things I haven't talked about, since those traits must be very good to keep all these design stupidities afloat.

If you activate the effect of Airspace targeting Raye and then activate Raye's effect directly after, you can resolve Airspace without losing any card advantage, giving you at least a +2 in card advantage. This is a big deal.
Your rephrasing does not at all address this extremely fundamental interaction that is part of why Sky Striker is such a good deck.

People mostly played because it was a situational card against search heavy decks, you could snipe a lot of things out of people's hands.
But generally last year they started playing Aqua Dolphin for killing Handtraps instead, which was fairly unexpected.

If you look at Airspace, there is a semicolon after "You can target 1 other card you control", this means that the cost of activating the effect is basically pointing at a card and saying "I target this". Then it says "excavate and add, if you excavated a Sky Striker card, send the target to the grave", whether the target is on the board or not at that point in time doesn't matter.
If it did the card would say something like "if you excavated a Sky Striker card send the target to the GY AND IF YOU DO add 1 excavated Sky Striker card to your hand". This wording would instantly make the card barely playable garbage.

It's so important that the text is EXACTLY as it is and no different, because it would be a completely different card.

i have deck loyalty, played gishkis forever then evolved them into nekroz, feels good to play a tier 1 deck after playing a tier 20 rogue deck. honestly with how yugioh has become, djinn wouldn't even be that bad with laval chain banned, the flood of hand traps, and called by the grave being able to stop it. yugioh kind of ends in turn 1-3 unless both decks brick desu.

PSCT (Problem Solving Card Text) is like legal text. It is in a way, that it is impossible to argue about what it means. There is exactly one way to read a yugioh card.
You obviously don't explain effects in PSCT language unless you really have to.

lore-wise the idea of the deck is that Raye puts on different mech suits that have special abilities and she can switch them on the fly. It's very cool and flavorful and directly reflected in the mechanics of the archetype.

The interaction between Raye and Airspace is basically meant to represent her taking off in one of her mech suits. i.e. Raye puts on the mech suit and she gets the corresponding special ability from the deck. It's genuinely really cool.
