I'm talking as a PCfag here so there's no console bias, the fact that Sony had that feature with the PS3 and then took it away is about the most retarded thing I've ever witnessed. It makes no fucking sense at all. The first one had PS2 hardware in it. I get it, it's expensive, and it had the $599 problem going for it. But there was another fat model that simply emulated the PS2 games, before they removed the feature entirely, and later in the PS3's life you could buy and download PS2 games anyway, which were also emulated. It just blows my mind how dumb they can be. If the PS5 plays every fucking PlayStation game from any console, I will seriously be impressed how not stupid they are for once.

Putting aside the simple fact that the vast majority of PS4 users will simply just transition to the PS5 regardless, all of Sony's current exclusives that made the PS4 such a success will have their sequels on the PS5. Microsoft clearly has fuck all in terms of relevant IPs that can ship units, so they're going to have to pull something major out of their ass to even have a chance while sony doesn't even need to try (those sequels don't even need to be good, just the idea they will exist will sell units alone).

Yeah, but we lack the direct documentation they have access to, and the main thing stopping them from implementing PS1/PS2 is not putting the parts for easy direct methods of emulation / recreation anymore, on top of various other factors. Sony could theoretically make better emulation for most of this stuff than we can, and probably even beat out PS1 emulation as well as make competent PS2 emulation (which they basically have for the PS4, seeing as the PS2 Classics are just upscaled PS2 games with improved rendering and no actual alterations otherwise).

It's not profitable to someone at Sony, so Sony doesn't care to do it when they could.

Sony just stuck two analog sticks on the PS1 pad, it was not designed for analog in the first place, and never changed it going forward. Handles are short and flat, not ergonomic, the analog sticks are too close together and the left stick is in the wrong place, the Dpad is segmented crap and is better only than the abortions found on the XB and 360 pads.

BC this gen to next will be completely different from last gens. Devs can just release a 5mb patch to change a few things and have visuals updated for the new hardware. Hell it wouldn't even need a patch just to play. The architecture will be the same from this gen to next. Its why BC won't be a problem in the first place like it would be from previous gens. This is ultimately why microsoft literally has to go through every game and update them before release them as new "BC" games even though it technically really isn't BC.

They literally had to put PS2 guts inside of the PS3, later models cut the BC to cut production costs. The PS2 also had PS1 parts in it for BC. With the PS4, they didn't even bother with BC because they knew it'd raise costs. PS4 is the first Sony console to not have some retarded esoteric architecture, meaning the PS5 can easily handle BC without needing to have PS4 parts inside of it. PAL consoles literally didn't ship with it. They shipped with the software emulator and that was removed eventually too. Sony chose to take BC out of it's ecosystem by choice. The PS4 could have had BC but I agree it didn't simply to keep costs down, it had nothing to do with the PS3 being architecturally dissimilar. Estimates had the PS4 costing about $380 to make at launch, so after shipping costs and the retailer taking a cut, etc. it sold at a small loss that was made up for with a game or two or a PS+ sub. It also probably would have meant fewer PS3 re-releases would have sold well on PS4.

Most consoles with bc did it by directly upgrading the previous hardware (Wii, Wii U, Game Boy Color) or by otherwise integrating it into the overall design for other purposes (DS, 3DS, PS2)
Only the GBA and PS3 added BC hardware purely for the sake of BC.

Including PS2 backwards compatibility at 100% required the PS2 hardware inside. Having the hardware inside increased the power draw and heat. Increased power draw required them to need a beefier PSU and needed that 3 pronged cord instead of the figure 8 one that literally every other playstation used. The increased heat required a better cooling solution. The increased power draw and heat are part of the problem for launch models to YLoD and why they all sound like jet engines taking off.
It's not always the price a single part that matters.

Cutting out PS2 also meant they could save money on the PSU, save money on the power cord, save money on a different cooling solution, save money by using a smaller sized board since they don't need to fit PS2 parts in, and save money because they could fit it all in less space when designing the Slim.

In the time I had my Xbox One until I sold it, about three years of me owning it, I went through four, FOUR fucking controllers because they all had the drift problem eventually. the ps2 used the processor the ps1 used as a subsystem that managed inputs, so to run ps1 games on it they just executed code on that processor. i don't think it cost them much considering they kept it on the slim

nintendo did the same thing on the GBA, ds and 3ds with including the previous console's cpu as an input or security subsystem that they could execute code on for backwards compatibility

but that was back when old chips were far cheaper than they were when the original came out. not so much for stuff now

Again, they cut it (among other things) because the PS3 was bombing and losing tons of money, so even though it wasn't too costly to implement they were looking for anything and everything they could do to get costs down. They expected it to sell like hotcakes like the PS2 did, they expected to make up for the hardware losses with software, but it didn't. I'd wager if the PS3 had been initially successful and hadn't lost billions of dollars it would have retained PS2 BC and other features.

Both microsoft and sony stated at the start of this gen (before microsoft did its BC stuff) that this gen will be running a more standard PC based architecture so from here on out it would be easier to code for and games will always be BC. As for ps1/2 emulators as far as I know there is actually already one hidden in the software.
