Acceleration is automated, you steer by moving your finger on the screen left or right, for some reason you need to turn on manual drifting. It feels like the other players are genuinely retarded because I somehow drove circles around them. Tapping uses items and your racer can get 1-3 items per box depending on the map. It's pretty simple but it could've been worse.
They're going to turn all their franchises into mobile F2P gachas at this rate.

I think one of my major issue is that certain characters are better than others on certain map. You're going to be really annoyed when you learn that on Luigi mansion that Luigi can hold three items while characters like koopa can only hold one.

I know the game HAS bots but I've been getting a lot of Japanese names and names like Stem Cell too. Also it puts me in a matchmaking room when trying to start a race so I doubt it's MEANT to be single-player.

I'm starting to understand what Nintendo was going for here.
This isn't a traditional Mario Kart (obviously) and the emphasis is on getting high scores on each level. The other players are all bots and are pretty easy to beat and get 1st place, which gets you a major score bonus. Other than placing well, you should be focusing on drift boosts, hitting boost markers, jumps, collecting coins and attacking other players for more score. Also you get an initial score bonus for using karts, gliders and characters that you've used frequently. With each course having different Characters/Karts/Gliders given a bonus, you're also urged to not stick to a single setup and play the gacha to unlock everything for optimal play on each course.
This is Mario Kart Score Attack Gacha edition, and I'm okay with it.

Uploader of that video here. The game is pretty meh. I really just wish I could invert the controls. The way it works is that you put your finger at the bottom of the screen and swipe and hold, swipe your finger to the left and it turns left, swiping to the right turns right. Drift is already set to automatic so swiping far in either direction starts a drift. My only qualm is I can't invert the swipe direction, I want to to go right when I swipe left and left when I swipe right, like in most other mobile games. But so far so good.
I'm kinda baffled as to why Nintendo won't make new content for MK8 seeing as its an old as fuck game and they could make even more money from it in the long run

You don't need much intuition to tell how its going to work. The maps each have benefits for different characters and if you have a specific character you can get more item slots than other people. I think theres also better bonuses on karts and gliders but im not sure.

and not everything is behind the gacha. you can get metal mario, the current super rare gacha character, for free after earning a shitload of grand stars (medals you get from races and achievements), and some other characters and karts along the way. plus you can use coins you get from races to buy kart parts.

In a game without reoccurring mtx, time is the currency of the game. If you get these cores from playing, then the time you put into getting them is the "money" you put in. 1. No inbetween currency.
2. No random chance banners
1. If you are grinding in a game, lets say Borderlands 2, then the gameplay loop is generally: Kill mob/boss until Item you want drops. In XC2, the loop is presumably:Kill mob/boss for crystals, a.k.a., merely the potential for weapons. This kind of middleman is fine in crafting systems, because you know for certain what the outcome of this middleman collecting is, without any doubt as to the conclusion.
2. That isn't to say that plenty of games don't use in-between currencies from mobs/bosses. Even Borderlands 2 has Seraph crystals, which drop from raid bosses, and are used to get pearls, which are the highest rarity guns. How this is importantly different, however, is that you outright buy the gun you want, instead of roll for a random gun from the drop table. There is an in-between, but there is random chance as to what you are getting out of this extra step currency.
