I love it, but I love classic JRPGs and Dragon Quest in particular. If you don't like the classic JRPG gameplay loop, you won't like it.

One of my friends is a DQ nut and hated the game, but couldn't put it into words.

The game is a lot more casual-friendly and forgiving than other games in the series, but I like it. Might be what it takes for Dragon Quest to catch on in the west.

id say it doesnt feel like a grand adventure compared to other games like 3 and 5, you cannot be invested in your character in the slightest

I recommend DQV. The DS version can be easily found, it's a much shorter game than XI and everyone agrees it's one of the best in the series.

Enjoy, dude. I don't mind the music personally, but it does suffer from extreme repetition and low quality synthesizers. The orchestral soundtrack should help a lot. It's not bad composing, just bad performance.

Did you play DQ8 on 3DS? Would you say it holds up to DQ11? Interested in trying it out.

The few pieces in the game are generally solid, but I feel like the game could do with a second composer at the very least. It's just way too long to only have one one battle theme and a couple town themes. I've had the fucking normal field theme stuck in my head for two weeks now.

8 is liked for similar reasons as XI. You could play either. Honestly DQ games don't change much and any are good entry points. My pick would be 5 due to its length and neat concept of aging through the game.

To be fair, it was the one character i never thought they would have killed off, even with the heavy foreshadowing. It was a pretty great story beat.

Because she's a loli, she's the dedicated black mage, and nobody else could fill her role. Killing her off would permanently (lol) remove her whole battle class from the game unless they introduced another caster to the party, which I figured would not happen. Also Rab and Serena shared a lot of skills so I was pretty sure Rab or even Serena would bite the dust at some point.

As an aside, I absolutely love Serena's character development in late Act 2. Wish she could stay that was in Act 3 as basically a DQ redmage.

Unironically, as much as I love her character, I would like there to be a hardmode where you don't save her, Calasmos recovers in the ruined world, and you have to beat him without the help of the old heroes. Serena gets to keep her skills.
