I think it's literally just accepting that he's a friendless loser who craves validation and attention. It's difficult for him to own up to it because he puts on a happy-go-lucky front in a vain attempt to make people like him more.

It's not really that juicy of a revelation but that's why I liked it. It's a good introduction to the game mechanic/character development approach Persona 4 took because it's a gentle start.

Personally I always have to remind myself of Chie's. I never even though it made that much sense in the first place and I always forget that she was supposedly, like, a shitty friend or something because it almost never trickles into the entire rest of the story. I feel like her and Yosuke were both a little underdeveloped as far as their persona awakenings go.

In retrospect idk if I really think the game handled persona acquisition that well. The "facing yourself" thing is cool and fits into the overarching theme of the game and shit, but barely anybody really seemed to develop as a result of it. They just say "Oh shit that's me I guess lol" then go back to acting the same way they did before. I think a lot of great opportunities for meaningful character development were missed.

It's why his social link is all about finding a way to get out of the delinquent branding he got stuck with and be more open about his hobby.

Golden beats it in over the head with his "Rank 11" scene and how he's changed his overall appearance come the epilogue.

Kanji was really an interesting character. A good message showing teenagers that masculinity and confidence comes from accepting how you are without caring about judgement from others. It all comes down to the concept you hold of yourself. Liking sewing and cute shit doesn't make you weak. Doubting yourself, trying hard to prove yourself to others, being insecure in your own skin makes you weak.
